"I am concerned about...suicides that will result from the concealed-carry legislation."

This editorial comes from a Dr. Greg Bachhuber -- a Minnesota physician who is happy that the battle to legalize concealed carry of firearms for self-defensive purposes in Wisconsin has been temporarily halted.

Something he says is just too bizarre for words:

"I am concerned about ...suicides that will result from the concealed-carry legislation."

We do not recall any news stories of concealed weapons permittees committing suicide while carrying -- and we monitor such things closely. But we did read about a police officer last week murdering his wife and then blowing his own brains out.

The doctor needs to see a shrink.

"The government no longer is releasing records tracking the source of firearms used in crimes, a concession to the gun lobby approved by Congress last month."

"The change was enforced for the first time last week when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives turned down Freedom of Information Act requests made by The Associated Press and others for certain gun records."

"The change bars the release of any information that was gathered regarding gun dealers and forces the ATF to more quickly purge information obtained in background checks of buyers. Law enforcement agencies still would have access." ...

"The Bush administration, gun groups and other supporters said it was needed to ensure police investigations were not compromised by the release of data and to protect gun dealers from those who would use the information to unfairly tar dealers." ...

"An 8-year-old boy brought a real but nonworking handgun to Sandown North Elementary School last week, and police have tried unsuccessfully to charge the student’s mother with endangering the welfare of a child."

"A Derry District Court judge denied the Sandown PD an arrest warrant, and Police Chief Scott Currier said the department has contacted the Bureau of ATF to determine the possibility of federal charges."

" 'We feel strongly that something should be done,' said Currier. 'She should know better than to let her child bring a gun to school.' "

"According to a police affidavit, the boy’s mother told him he could bring the disabled firearm to school as long as it was not taken out until he got to his friend’s house after school."

"How many times have we seen headlines screaming, 'Slumbering homeowner awakens to armed intruder,' or 'Armed thugs smash door, terrorize residents.' "

"Not one of the innocent children, who trusted their unconstitutionally-disarmed, condition white parents, kidnapped out of their own bedrooms, some at gunpoint, have ever returned alive, or in the case of Elizabeth Smart, undamaged."

"We’ve all seen the headlines about illegal shootings, stabbings, bombings and other mayhem at workplaces throughout our nation, undeterred by a plethora of mala prohibita laws or mercenary proxy-guardian 'police.' "

"Not a day goes by without another sordid tale of another vicious carjacking, abduction at knifepoint, or other illegal assault while anxiously getting into or out of your vehicle."

"According to a Department of 'Justice' report in March 1999, between 1992 and 1996, an average of almost fifty thousand carjackings occurred each year. In about ninety percent of them, an illegal weapon was employed."

"A study by the Illinois mercenary proxy-guardian state 'police' of 1994 to 1996 carjackings showed most were gang-related."

"ASP Mohd Izaan Abdullah, 42, has denied dragging villager Milah Bangaloi, 53, during an eviction process."

"He said he led her for 10 to 15 feet along a path (cleared of bushes), although there were bushes around the path, to be handed over to Lance-Corporal Ravi A/L BalaKrishnan and taken away."

" 'She was walking all the way. I never dragged her. They (villagers) are lying,' he told the open inquiry into alleged police brutality that entered its third day, Friday."

"Asked by Commissioner Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Ramon Navaratnam how the mild soft tissue injury on Milah’s shoulder could have happened, Izaan, now Ranau CID Chief, replied: 'I just do not know.' "

Authorities say a gun belonging to another deputy went off accidentally as the officers entered a home in Ladd Court with a warrant. Gast was flown to Baltimore's Shock Trauma Center. He was treated and released this morning. The unidentified deputy who fired his weapon is now on paid administrative leave, pending an internal investigation."

When it comes to an unplanned firearm discharge, the word "accident" is incorrect. The term is "negligent."

Some people in Maryland want to ban so-called "assault weapons." Maybe they should instead ban Assault Deputies.

"Officers investigating an attempted security van raid burst into the west London address in the early hours on November 20, 2002 and discovered a number of Austrian, Italian and Chinese-made arms, alleged Mark Gadsden, prosecuting."

Metro Police Youth Services detectives arrested a 14-year-old seventh grader yesterday at Madison School for carrying a loaded .380 semiautomatic pistol on campus, police said.

The school's principal learned from another student that the teen was suspected of having a gun. The principal searched the boy and found the weapon in his jacket pocket. The pistol's clip was loaded with five bullets, police said.

The student said he bought the gun on the street and forgot that he had it in his jacket. He was charged at Juvenile Court with carrying a gun on school property.

The Frederick County sheriff's deputy who was shot in a raid has been released from the hospital. According to the county sherriff's office, the shooting of Deputy Richard Gast may have been an accident.

The shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. while a drug investigation was taking place in Ladd Court. Officials said a fellow deputy's gun went off automatically, shooting Deputy Gast. He was airlifted to Baltimore's Shock Trama Center Thursday night and was released Friday morning.

The deputy who accidentally fired his weapon has been put on paid leave. The investigation is ongoing.

-------
It's one thing to confirm negligence or claim that the shooting was an accident. It's quite another - a higher level of avoidance of responsibility - to claim the gun went off "automatically."

"Nearly $2 billion has either been spent on or committed to the federal program since it was introduced in the mid-1990s, according to documents obtained by Zone Libre of CBC's French news service."

"The figure is roughly twice as much as an official government estimate that caused an uproar across the country."

"The gun registry was originally supposed to cost less than $2 million. In December 2002, Auditor General Sheila Fraser revealed that the program would run up bills of at least $1 billion by 2005." ...

"The auditor general has pledged to re-examine the gun registry to come up with an updated assessment. Last month, Prime Minister Paul Martin rejected calls to scrap the program." ...

-------
So now we're looking at a program running 1,000 times more expensive than originally projected -- with no scientific evidence that it will reduce crime -- and a government committed to continuing anyway. In other words, situation normal.

NY: Domestic Violence Bill Seeks to Expand the Definition of "Family" to Include Non-Family

"Homicides, drug-related crimes and even gun-related crimes did not top Monroe County's court cases in 2003. It was domestic violence crime which dominated the court docket."

"There were 532 domestic violence cases in 2003. And today, local lawmakers got a chance to take a closer look at four bills up for discussion in the State Assembly and Senate this year..." ...

"The first bill is an expanded definition of 'family and household-member.' The bill gives expanded protection to non-family members in an abusive situation, including court orders of protection. Non-family members [are] those who are not related by blood, marriage or child." ...

"The last bill is one which would require both the victim and the accused to disclose any and all firearms to the courts." ...

-------
Got that? Family includes non-family, and domestic violence includes non-domestic violence, and the objective is gun confiscation.

REMINDER: The Lautenberg Amendment (9/30/1996) expanded federal law's list of people prohibited from possessing firearms to include people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.

To catch more fish, use a bigger net -- right? If we don't support calling non-family "family" and non-domestic "domestic," we're spouse beaters and child abusers, right?

"Aside from same-sex 'marriage,' there is at least one other cultural issue no Democrat running against President Bush wants to touch: gun control. Bill Clinton and Al Gore both tried to avoid picking up this political hot potato in their 1992, 1996 and 2000 presidential campaigns because gun control is unpopular in swing states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and can harm a candidate's chances across the South. One consultant who worked for Wesley Clark's southern campaign said the best thing liberals can do during a gun-control debate is 'change the subject.' Not all Democrats agree, and some legislators on Capitol Hill plan to push gun-control measures up until the November election."

"May we use equally plain language to express KSL’s view . . . and what repeated public opinion polls suggest is the long-held majority view in this state: Senator Waddoups and his concealed carry cronies could use a good dose of common sense."

"Guns, concealed or otherwise, don’t belong on college campuses!"

KABA Note: And why is that? Are students safer on college campuses? Can they not be raped or murdered? Do students not deserve to defend their lives and property?

About 1.7 percent of female college students reported being raped, and about 1.1 percent said they were victims of attempted rape, according to the report from the U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice and Bureau of Justice Statistics.

An estimated 13 percent of college women had been stalked since the beginning of the school year, according to the study.

Should these women not be "allowed" to defend themselves with the most effective tool on the market today?

"KSL is not against the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

KABA Note: No, KSL is just against law abiding citizens exercising their rights under the Second Amendment.

He says KwaZulu-Natal is the leader in the recovery of illegal arms in the country. Van Eyk says firearms are the single biggest contributor to violent crimes.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The gun debate circus goes on, with the Deseret Morning News right there in the center ring. The only thing ridiculous about the gunfight is the stand the Deseret Morning News has on the issue.

In a perfect world, there would be no need for guns. Even the wild beasts would be friendly and helpful. But, alas, things are far from perfect.

The question is not if guns have anything to do with higher education or if those carrying guns on campus would intimidate knowledge seekers. If one person feels so threatened to be prompted get a concealed firearms permit to feel secure, that should be reason enough.

If guns are taken from honest citizens on the campuses of higher education, what's next? Public transportation? Shopping malls? Parks? City streets? Our own homes? Finally it will be unlawful to own a gun, period. Is that what you want, Deseret Morning News?

-------
The answer to the last question should be fairly obvious. Statist thugs don't ever want a society in which individuals are able to defend themselves without having to rely on the nanny state for their safety. The Deseret Morning News is simply their propaganda tool.
