"The National Rifle Association (NRA) and law abiding gun owners have won yet another victory On February 13, 2007, against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and former police chief Warren Riley."

"Judge Carl J. Barbier ... granted NRA's motion for contempt against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Warren Riley ..."

"'Once more, Mayor Ray Nagin and former police chief Warren Riley are held accountable for considering themselves above the law,' said Chris W. Cox, NRA's chief lobbyist. 'These men have had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, every step of the way in this process to return the lawfully owned firearms to their own citizens, and Judge Barbier rightly found them in contempt of court for their complete lack of respect for the rule of law.'" ...

"In 1996, Michael Bellesiles published a paper in the Journal of American History. The thesis: Early Americans rarely owned firearms, and manufacturer marketing and activist lobbying created today's gun culture. Four years later, Mr. Bellesiles turned the paper into a book, 'Arming America.'"

The claim, obviously, was false. ... he resigned his job as an Emory University professor. Columbia University revoked the Bancroft Prize it had awarded Mr. Bellesiles and asked for the award money back."

"One good thing came from all this, though. The initially positive reaction to 'Arming America' stunned gun-rights supporter, historian and blogger Clayton Cramer. He decided to set the record straight, and the result is the thorough and well written 'Armed America.'" ...

"The Issue: The president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence suggests that changes in societal attitudes as well as the enactment and enforcement of laws are needed to stop gun violence."

"Our Opinion: He's right, but as yet there has been no agreement on how those attitude changes should be made."

"An average of 90 people a day are killed by guns in the United States, according to Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."

KABA Note: Actually it is closer to 83 a day, and only if you include the 46 daily suicides that use a gun.

"'The response by the Bush Administration's Justice Department to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking come across as an effort to silence the messenger rather than respond to the problem of a rise in violent crime,' according to Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."

"Once again today, we are all struggling with reports about terrible losses of lives to gun violence. What a disturbed teenager in Utah and a tormented businessman in Pennsylvania have in common is that they had access to guns. Horrific mass killings cannot be committed with knives or baseball bats or bare fists. Weak gun laws have led to a glut of weapons on the streets. And as a result, bitter human frustrations lead to gun violence. Anger leads to killings. When will our Nation wake up and confront the tragic reality that we make it far too easy for dangerous people to have access to guns?" ...

The PATH Coalition hopes that the business community of Philadelphia will join us in the campaign to strengthen Pennsylvania's gun laws, so to reduce the likelihood of all gun violence." ...

"Gun violence is the scourge of Philadelphia. Last year, 406 people were murdered in this city. Nearly all the victims were young, poor, and black; and already, the city is on course to exceed this total in 2007. The situation here has become so dire that in late January, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence released a report in Philly entitled 'Shady Dealings: Illegal Gun Trafficking from Licensed Gun Dealers.' The report focused on over two dozen cases of gun trafficking nationwide, most of incidents coming from urban areas like Philly." ...

"... just what happened between the Utah Legislature and the University of Utah, which wanted a legislative means to enforce its long-standing concealed weapons ban? A legislative solution was needed after the Utah Supreme Court found the policy conflicted with state law."

"So university officials said, in effect, 'OK, we'll work with the Legislature on this. ...'"

"For that demonstration of good faith, the university got a state law that permits students who live on campus to elect not to be placed with students who are concealed-weapon permit holders and allows professors to post signs if they object to a student carrying a concealed weapon into their offices."

"Permit holders are still free to carry guns ... just about anywhere else on campus."

"Some compromise."

"On Feb. 2, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel published a letter decrying the argument that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees a right of individual gun ownership as 'hokum.' Apparently, the author of the letter was unaware that in 2001 a decision of the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal held exactly that. While subsequent decisions of the Ninth and Tenth Circuits disagree, the issue will not be settled until the U.S. Supreme Court tackles the issue head on and it, unfortunately, has been avoiding Second Amendment cases for almost 70 years. Regardless, there is much scholarly debate both ways, hardly the stuff of 'hokum.'" ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. — C. S. LEWIS
