Bill Masters of Colorado's rural San Miguel County has been sheriff -- an elected position -- for 22 years.
Sheriff Masters, 49, and the father of four, has won a certificate of appreciation from the Drug Enforcement Administration and even helped bust a former town marshal on drug charges. |

About half of the county's gun owners with young children do not store the weapons safely in the house!!!
A "telephone survey" by the county's "Department of Health Services" "found" that "45% of gun owners in 8,000 households interviewed did not lock the weapons in a gun cabinet or container."
Data from 1999 show 19% of deaths of people under the age of 20 in Los Angeles County were by gunshot. The national average is 12%.
KABA NOTE: What the "report" doesn't say is that most of those "under 20" who died were teenagers involved in gang and illegal drug activity, not because of how weapons were stored. |

In yet another negative ruling for gun-grabbers, the Georgia Court of Appeals has dismissed a suit by the city of Atlanta against gun manufacturers and trade associations. The court put it very simply saying that only the STATES have the right to regulate firearms. |

That paragon of [KABA NOTE: disgrace and incompetence], former Attorney General Janet Reno, disapproves of the way her successor, John Ashcroft, is doing his job. I hate them because they destroy lives, and the victims could fill Yankee Stadium many times over. Not just those killed by bullets and AIDS, but also those who are maimed for life or paralyzed, or prematurely pregnant, or forced to mother kids while still a teenager."

The proposal does not say what Westchester would charge, but notes that Nassau County, which has a special exemption to set its own fee, charges $200 for a five-year license. In Westchester and the other counties, the fee is now $10 for a five-year license. |

Missourians who carelessly leave weapons around when children are present would be fined $500 under a bill heard Wednesday by a Senate panel. The legislation, known as the "Children’s Firearm Access Prevention Act," would punish those who allow children under the age of 17 to have easy access to weapons and ammunition. Under the bill, people could face fines when they know, or should have known, that a child could gain access to their weapons. |

It's not a question of whether but how Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will seek to sidetrack the campaign finance reform bill that passed the House this week. He may filibuster, he may go to court or he may do both.
McConnell's position does come with political risks, but he doesn't believe the issue is overly important to voters.

Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft moved Wednesday to close "gaps" that have allowed "untold numbers" of illegal residents to buy guns, but he stood firm in his opposition to a potentially powerful tool: allowing the FBI to determine if terrorist suspects have purchased weapons.
"Ashcroft vowed to shore up a problem-plagued system for checking gun purchases that has allowed illegal residents nationwide to purchase guns from licensed dealers, even though such purchases are banned by federal law." |
