The man who shot his neighbor’s son on Thursday may have done so in self-defense, Wichita police said.
An 81-year-old man and his 56-year-old son got in an argument at a home in the 600 block of North Parkdale at around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, Officer Charley Davidson said. The father became concerned and called his 73-year-old neighbor, who went to the house, which is near Central and Maize Road. |

Although largely recognized as a big-game hunter with a penchant for big-bore rifles, Ernest Hemingway also held certain small-bore chamberings in high esteem. In particular, he favored the .22 Long Rifle, for which he once claimed boldly, “… standing in one corner of a boxing ring with a .22 caliber Colt automatic pistol, shooting a bullet weighing only 40 grains and with a striking energy of 51 foot pounds at 25 feet from the muzzle, I will guarantee to kill either Gene Tunney or Joe Louis before they get to me from the opposite corner.” It was certainly strange indeed that the old master used this macabre scenario to illustrate his implicit faith in the .22 caliber, but he obviously wanted to emphasize his point. |

We face a question of not only rights and liberty; but a very legitimate debate over the effectiveness of the current gun control strategies, such as firearm free zones. For example, According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, from the 1950’s through July 10th of 2016, 98.4 percent of mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones, with just 1.6 percent occurring where citizens are allowed to be armed. |

More than 100 protesters stood outside the National Rifle Association headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, on Friday night demanding action on gun control in the wake of Wednesday’s school shooting in Florida.
Among the attendees were friends of some of the 17 students and teachers who were killed in Parkland, Florida; Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va.; and relatives of those shot and killed at Virginia Tech in 2007.
“Children are dead because of you,” Connolly said of the NRA, in comments reported by ABC’s Washington, D.C. affiliate WJLA-TV. |

Thirty thousand Americans die every year from gunshot wounds, whether from homicide, suicide, or accident. We have had several school shootings in the past several months, roughly one every sixty hours thus far in 2018. And our feckless leaders in the Senate and the House remain beholden to the National Rifle Association, a trade organization that has opposed any attempt to remedy the problem. While children die, they remind Americans that the Founding Fathers asserted in the Second Amendment that “a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” |

What far right-wing policies are our schools following? What NRA policies are our schools following? What 2nd Amendment rights do you have in a school?
The left is trying to blame the right for the problem of school shootings. Yet, nothing that we conservatives have been proclaiming is being followed in our Public Schools. NRA members are kicked out of schools! Gun safety classes have been removed from schools! The second amendment has been removed from schools! Schools are gun-free zones!
How can you blame "the right to bear arms" when we Americans do not have "the right to bear arms" in schools? |

A deadly school shooting in neighboring Florida colored debate Thursday in the Alabama Legislature over “Stand Your Ground” legislation regarding the use of deadly force to defend someone in a church.
The proposed revision of the state’s self-defense law says a person is presumed justified in the use of force if they reasonably believe someone is about to seriously harm a church member. The Houses of Representatives approved the bill on a 40-16 vote. It now moves to the Alabama Senate. |

The problem is that the contributions are intended to influence Gardner’s vote against any proposed, common-sense gun regulation. The seemingly-innocent “Rifle Association” is now an association that protects the right to own weapons of war. Its name has no bearing to “rifles” (in the context of hunting or skeet shooting or self defense), but now refers to assault weapons--weapons of war. The “NRA” should be changed to “NAWA”--National Assault Weapons Association. |

Gun-violence restraining orders (GVROs) make us all safer while empowering the individual and protecting liberty. To understand the American gun-control debate, you have to understand the fundamentally different starting positions of the two sides. Among conservatives, there is the broad belief that the right to own a weapon for self-defense is every bit as inherent and unalienable as the right to speak freely or practice your religion. It’s a co-equal liberty in the Bill of Rights, grounded not just in the minds of the Founders but in natural law.

A so-called “stand your ground” bill moved forward in the Wyoming Legislature on Thursday with overwhelming support. Wyoming is currently the only state that requires individuals to retreat when attacked in public.
“This bill simply says, ‘Anywhere you’re legally allowed to be, you do not have to retreat if you’re in fear for your very life,’” said Rep. Tim Salazar, R-Dubois, the measure’s sponsor. |

Montel Williams has interviewed enough troubled teens over the years to know that they shouldn’t be buying guns. And he’s observed Republicans long enough to know that the petty obsessions of the GOP tend to drown out empathy and common sense.
In this MSNBC clip, Williams rips the Party of Lincoln for caring more about what’s in high school students’ pants – and more about where they go pee – than the outbreak of children shooting at each other with assault weapons. “Are we this stuck on stupid that we will spend more time arguing where a child goes to the bathroom in a school than talking about protecting that child’s life?” |

On Thursday, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said he was writing a letter to Texas’ two U.S. senators and Dallas-area representatives to the U.S. House, urging them to take action against the epidemic of mass shootings. Rawlings was careful to cast it as a nonpartisan issue, citing both “mental health,” a common Republican talking point in the wake of gun massacres, and “gun control,” Democrats’ preferred option, as potential causes of the violence. |

For too long, supporters of a narrow reading of the Second Amendment have shied away from any sensible approaches to decreasing violence while also protecting one’s right to bear arms. But if the Second Amendment is your thing, you have to be fair and honestly contemplate how things have changed since and what existed when the Second Amendment was written. Killing technology has come a long way, to say the least. |
