One of Nova Scotia's Liberal leadership candidates caused some jaws to drop Thursday night in his response to a complaint that the province has too many politicians.
"We can get out a machine-gun and deal with the ineffective ones," Bedford businessman Francis MacKenzie told about 75 people gathered at the Kentville fire hall.
"And we can keep the good ones, and the good ones usually wear red shirts, so we'll start there." |

On Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at 2:42 a.m., the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Shays-Meehan Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Bill (H.R.2356).
The bill directly prohibits labor unions, corporations and non-profit organizations from running ads mentioning a candidate 60 days prior to an election. This directly assaults our freedom of speech. The Constitution clearly states, "Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." - Kyle Williams, 13 |

GOA ALERT: A true pro-gun bill has passed the Committee of the Whole and is now headed for final passage in the Arizona House of Representatives. That vote will occur early next week, probably on Tuesday. Please contact both of your Representatives using the roster below and urge them to vote YES on HB2454. HB 2454 is the best kind of concealed carry reform, since it takes great strides towards the Vermont model of true concealed carry rights...

[Not directly gun-related, but of concern.]
Virginia is on the verge of making a quantum leap in amassing DNA evidence by requiring that everyone arrested on suspicion of a violent crime yield genetic samples for possible matches in unsolved cases.
The plan has prompted warnings about privacy invasion and the abuse of defendants' rights. A crucial issue is how securely DNA samples might be expunged if a suspect is exonerated. |

"...my friend purchased one and had to go through a background investigation and some other red tape, but that's part of the system to protect us against evil people getting guns. ... The salesperson was also nice enough to inform her of all the places she could not take the gun, for her own safety. It wouldn't be very pleasant for her to wind up in jail if she forgets, but then it's for our own good ... the government said so..." - Dorothy Anne Seese |

The House Civil & Commercial Law Committee will be accepting proponent testimony on HB303 Wednesday, 2/20/2002, 9:30am, in Room 114, Statehouse. HB303 will ensure only the state legislature can pass laws regulating firearms, prohibiting municipalities from passing their own restrictions.
In addition, the revised sub-committee version of House Bill 274, the NRA-backed Right to Carry bill, will be presented to the committee.
Please make plans to attend and address the committee on HB 303. |

"A decade ago, the gun lobby initiated its state-by-state campaign to remove or loosen the restrictions on individual carrying of concealed firearms. Contending that more guns in the hands of private citizens in public places would deter crime, backers of these "shall issue" laws have been successful in convincing more than 30 state legislatures to pass them... The gun lobby and its supporters are clearly relentless..." - Dick Dahl |

America's subservience to the United Nations and transformation into the world's policeman is not accidental but is part of a grand design to establish world government. ... Official admissions of this little-known truth aren't commonplace, but they do occur. Take journalist Michael Hirsh's stunning comments in a recent issue of Newsweek, for example. Buried more than four pages into an otherwise typical anti-isolationism screed entitled "Death of a Founding Myth," we find the following:... |

"You are doing God's work," Brady Bill sponsor Charles Schumer remarked to Sarah Brady at one Congressional hearing. ... But did God really endorse the Brady Bill? One would certainly think so, given the huge number of Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish religious organizations that endorsed the Brady Bill, and which endorse virtually every other gun control proposal. God's anti-gun army is prominent not just in Washington, but also in the state legislatures." - Dave Kopel |

An anti-gun TV show I watched fairly recently: "TLC's Ultimate 10: Survival Stories".
Way up on top they put Mr. and Mrs. Brady as heroic "crusaders" out to fight the evils of gun ownership. They even had a touching little scene with Mrs. Brady crying on and then writing to the NRA saying "I will bring you down!" Then they had former president Clinton on there saying how the Brady Bill had saved some odd 600,000 lives.
I have long beleived Hollywood and the media to be anti-gun but this I beleive was a new low for them. |

"Could you imagine the up-roar that would result if our state legislature tried to create "Fifth Amendment Free Zones"? If they did, we could force these nasty Enron executives to tell us what they know!
But alas, we have a Constitution… or do we?
It looks like our elected representatives favor selective enforcement.
for some reason, my "Pleading the Second" is just not going to carry nearly as much weight as those Enron executives’ have when they "Plead the Fifth."... - Joe Lolli |

The phrase "maximum protection" has been bandied about for years by those in the thick of the interagency skirmishing over emergency preparations for the Anniston Army Depot's chemical stockpile or the incinerator built to destroy it.
[Not quite Second Ammendment related, but it's a frightening thought that we have a stockpile of chemical weapons this large.] |

"Seeing military troops standing around was certainly not very comforting, though. Many were probably not old enough to get into a bar yet and surely none were of age to get a reasonable auto insurance rate. All would have been arrested in a heartbeat for carrying a weapon in public outside the airport. But, there they were, acting like they were ready to corral the traveling public and conquer a civilian airport..." - Doug Fiedor |

"Today, the Violence Prevention Campaign released its first study, From the Gun War to the Culture War: How the NRA Has Become the Pillar of the Right, which documents how the National Rifle Association (NRA) under the direction of Charlton Heston has transformed itself from a radical pro-gun group into the mainstay of the conservative, right-wing movement." |

Mr. Chairman, this so-called "reform" legislation is clearly unconstitutional. Many have pointed out that the First amendment unquestionably grants individuals and businesses the free and unfettered right to advertise, lobby, and contribute to politicians as they choose ... passage of this bill will import into American law the totalitarian concept that government officials should be able to use their power to silence their critics. |

The federal government assumed responsibility from the airlines Sunday for airport passenger and baggage screening.
That dramatic shift was an important example of how the government is exercising its authority to try and protect the nation from another terror attack, even if it means removing private industry to get the job done. The Bush administration opposed the creation of a federal work force to perform screening operations when the matter was before Congress. |

A key U.S. senator said Sunday he believes he has enough colleagues lined up to block a bill to reduce the influence of money in politics. But others said they expected lawmakers to yield to public pressure and send the measure to President Bush to sign into law. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said he expected 41 senators to oppose the mainly Democrat-backed bill passed last week by the House of Representatives. |

Republican Senator John McCain laid the ground work for last week's House vote on campaign finance reform in the fall of 2000, campaigning for 25 House Republicans and winning from them public pledges of support for such reform. Party officials had happily furnished McCain with a jet for this pilgrimage, reasoning (correctly) that he would help keep swing districts in Republican hands. Fortified by last-minute, targeted TV ads and phone banks, McCain's work paid off... |

BATTLE LAKE, Minn. — For those middle-of-the-night medical emergencies, Battle Lake pharmacist Jay Olson takes his gun to town.
"It makes me feel secure," said Olson, 40, who adds that he is never fully dressed without a 9 mm strapped to his side. "I don't care, really, if (a thief) robs me blind, but he's not going to get me." |
