"A handgun that shoots bullets that penetrate police body armor has generated alerts to law enforcement officers all over America from numerous sources, including the federal Department of Homeland Security."
"The manufacturer has misled federal firearms officials, saying that the weapon's ammunition won't penetrate body armor, despite tests that prove it does. So what is Congress doing about it?"
"The gun lobby's allies in Congress, with the backing of President Bush, are supporting a bill that would give the gun's manufacturer ironclad protection from legal accountability to police officers shot with this cop-killer weapon. Legislation that would shield the most reckless gun sellers from being held accountable in court for negligent conduct has been introduced in both the House and Senate." |

"It would be a mistake, however, to pass such a law in response to the problem of youth suicide. There may be good reasons to have waiting periods, but youth suicide is a much larger issue than access to firearms. Indeed, the problem cannot be effectively combated that way."
"Passing a law to limit younger adults' ability to purchase guns will not prevent a determined and suicidal youth from finding a means to kill himself or herself. The waiting period bill won't outlaw mental illness. It won't remove the thousands of guns already in Maine homes. It won't take away the many other means for committing suicide." |

"A bill that would shield gun makers and dealers from being sued when the firearms they sell are used in crimes drew no opposition at a hearing in front of a House panel yesterday."

"Rep. Robert Ackerman, D-Eugene, House Judiciary civil-law subcommittee chairman, said the panel will rework the bill to try to resolve the conflict." |

"As for the Columbine incident, Fischer's point is a weak one. The two shotguns and rifle used in the Columbine massacre were purchased by a girlfriend who didn't have a felony record that would have triggered an instant background check to fail. Besides, Harris and Klebold could have gotten their guns without going to a gun show, the same way almost all criminals already do, thus obviating the need for a surrogate who might or might not be deterred by background checks. ...They violated close to 20 firearms laws that existed in obtaining their weapons. To suggest that one more law, directed the less than 1 percent of guns used in crime, would stop determined mad men like Harris and Klebold is misguided." |

You are congratulated on your headline in Saturday's paper that read "Gun crime = hard time." Now, that is "gun control" that makes sense!
With all the state and federal laws currently existing, it is about time the prosecutors used them. For years the laws have existed, yet criminals and would-be lawbreakers haven't got the message that using a firearm in a crime simply is not worth the consequences.
Finally, a focus on lawbreakers makes much more sense than restricting rights of law-abiding people and limiting their ability to adequately protect themselves, their property and families.
This kind of "gun control" I support.
