A recently introduced bill in Tennessee is creating a lot of buzz among parents and educators concerned about bullying in our schools.
The proposal aims to loosen those tough no-fighting polices. It's would give students the option to fight back without punishment if school officials determine it was in self-defense.
Under current, wide-spread "Zero Tolerance" fighting policies, those who attack others and those who defend themselves are punished equally. |

On guns, President Obama needs a "Plan B."
The president himself recognizes that the votes probably aren't there to pass any significant gun legislation through Congress. In his State of the Union address, he was reduced to pleading with Congress to allow a vote at all, never mind actually enact anything. |

The premise of this article is that the very debates that drive gun sales: further prohibitions to buying them, magazine capacity minimization, or outright bans, are only going to continue as this country's demographics change.
While I have an FOID card, and come from a family that owns rifles, shotguns and handguns, I'll try not to make this political. I will stick to history, demographics, and other supply and demand issues that will affect the gun stocks. |

Hunters were not silenced by lack of an organized voice as you depicted in your February 7 editorial. They were silenced by a Governor and opportunistic politicians who violated their own rules to pass flawed legislation after midnight avoiding the customary three day review rule. Representatives had less than one hour to read the 25,000 word document before voting. Organizations representing hunters had no opportunity to be heard. |

Well, from a logical perspective, guns cannot save lives. They are inanimate objects made to cause harm to another being. I understand Zuegel’s argument that it is possible for fewer people to be killed in a mass shooting if someone is able to “take out” the shooter. However, by no means are guns tools of peace. At the end of the day, guns are tools meant to cause harm to another being. |

A controversial Alaska gun bill sponsored by House Speaker Mike Chenault that would put federal agents at risk of felony charges for enforcing certain future weapons laws cleared the lone committee assigned to hear it Monday, despite a legal opinion saying it is likely unconstitutional.
Chenault's proposal is immensely popular among Republicans and a few Democrats. It has 19 co-sponsors, so half the House is already signed onto it. |

After much heated debate on Friday, a package of gun-control measures passed in the Colorado House on Monday, including limiting magazines to 15 rounds, background checks for all gun transactions, requiring gun owners to pay for their own background checks and banning concealed weapons on public college campuses. The four bills will now move to the Senate. |

Opponents of gun rights seem to be frustrated by the Constitution.
The Constitution is a flawed document, they claim. The founders weren't infallible. What passed for rights in an 18th-century context can't possibly stand muster in our modern society.
Their arguments are based in rationality, they say. After all, guns kill people, right? It is time to reassess the Second Amendment. |

A Boulder company says it will leave the state if HB 1224 becomes law.
Magpul, Colorado's largest and most profitable manufacturer of high-capacity ammunition magazines, said it would leave the state if the HB 1224 becomes law.
If Magpul leaves, Colorado will lose an estimated $85 million dollars in revenue and approximately 600 jobs.
The National Rifle Association opposes all four bills, saying they Colorado's bills are threatening Americans' Second Amendment rights, said NRA spokeswoman Stephanie Samford. |

SAFE Act protestors and Second Amendment rights activists filled a park outside of the Capitol last Tuesday for the second time since the passage of the controversial legislation.
Emboldened by sympathetic lawmakers and conservative pundits, the protesters braved 30-degree weather, wind and sloppy ground conditions to speak out against new state gun laws they say are overly restrictive, ineffective and tainted by the process by which they were pushed through the Senate and Assembly last month. The protesters chanted slogans, waved signs and displayed effigies of Republican "redcoat traitors," who voted for the restrictive gun laws. |

If, as expected, a law allowing carrying concealed handguns in Illinois is passed, it will not be the last legislation on the topic, according to concealed carry advocate James "Bud" Harton, of Leland.
"When we get concealed carry passed next month, we're not done," Harton told an audience of three dozen at the Marseilles Rotary meeting Monday.
Harton, a retired Leland police chief and veteran of the Vietnam war with extensive military experience, has been working through Illinois Carry for a concealed carry law for seven years. |

More than 3,250 stories have been published about the apparent suicide by country singer Mindy McCready, and USA Today didn’t waste much time putting the onus on guns with a headline declaring that her passing “highlights the role of guns in suicide.”
To paraphrase the popular quip, “Guns cause suicide like spoons cause people to get fat.”
The Seattle P-I.com’s coverage reveals quite a bit about Ms. McCready that suggests her death would have come sooner than later even if there weren’t a firearm in her entire neighborhood. The story notes, “In May 2010, she was hospitalized briefly after police responded to an overdose call at a home in North Fort Myers, Fla., owned by her mother. |
