House Speaker Paul Ryan is a tool of the National Rifle Association, said his would-be Democratic challenger after Ryan told a Florida teacher that he "didn't want to talk politics" when she criticized his response to Wednesday's deadly school shooting in Broward County.
Ryan called the shooting horrific, but said that lawmakers do not just "knee-jerk before having all the facts and the data" in making decisions about gun control law in a Thursday interview with WIBC radio.
Submitters note: Lets place the blame where it belongs. On the liberal politicians that made all schools victim disarmament zones. It is not a coincidence that all of these shootings take place at soft targets. |

Students, faculty, staff and visitors are a step closer to being able to carry some kinds of weapons on the campuses of public colleges and universities. HB 2172, approved by the House Thursday on a 35-23 vote, is designed to provide new options for self-defense. It specifically would overrule existing policies at the state’s three universities that now make over-the-counter pepper spray the only type of weapon permitted. |

As Washington state politics resounds with an overwhelming and deep shade of blue, it is no surprise that two acts of gun control legislation have recently been passed into law. In 2015, a measure to expand background checks was approved by voters, and the city of Seattle imposed a gun tax on all firearm and ammunition purchased within city limits.
While, both acts have been virtually ineffectual in preventing firearms sales or raising tax revenues to a level that rivals initial estimates spewed out by lobbyists and supporters, the pair of restrictions on citizens and businesses epitomizes the blatantly unbalanced political culture of the Evergreen state. |

Although largely recognized as a big-game hunter with a penchant for big-bore rifles, Ernest Hemingway also held certain small-bore chamberings in high esteem. In particular, he favored the .22 Long Rifle, for which he once claimed boldly, “… standing in one corner of a boxing ring with a .22 caliber Colt automatic pistol, shooting a bullet weighing only 40 grains and with a striking energy of 51 foot pounds at 25 feet from the muzzle, I will guarantee to kill either Gene Tunney or Joe Louis before they get to me from the opposite corner.” It was certainly strange indeed that the old master used this macabre scenario to illustrate his implicit faith in the .22 caliber, but he obviously wanted to emphasize his point.

The left wants to talk about gun control in the wake of Nikolas Cruz’s mass murder of 17 students Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida Fine. We need to talk. Something is definitely wrong with our society when this happens with such frequency and intensity. But the left seems intent to begin with non-starters and distractions like blaming the National Rifle Association or calling for a repeal of the Second Amendment.

In the wake of the high school shooting that killed 17 people, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio says Florida should consider enacting a law that would allow family members or law enforcement officials to ask a court to remove guns from a person who poses a danger. Democratic state legislators filed bills that would create “risk protection orders” but the legislation hasn’t been heard during this year’s session.

A "Wild Game" charity dinner aiming to raise money for a high school football team in western Oakland County has been canceled after community members pushed back at the premise of the event, which included a gun raffle with prizes such as an AR-15 — the same weapon that was used to kill 17 people at a Florida school this past week.
"Due to the recent tragic events earlier this week, the South Lyon Football Booster Organization has decided to cancel their second annual Wild Game Dinner. The sensitivity of the issue coupled with the untimely tragedy has led to the decision," a statement posted on the team's website said.

Conservative talk radio star Rush Limbaugh on Sunday returned to the argument that allowing concealed weapons in classrooms -- not demonstrations or blaming the NRA -- is the way to stop school shootings, speaking three days after 17 people were killed in a Florida high school.
“The solution is we need concealed carry in schools,” Limbaugh told “Fox News Sunday.” “We need a mechanism to be defensive. It’s better to have mechanisms in schools to stop it when it breaks out.”
“We have armed security at every public entity except schools,” Limbaugh said.
Submitters note: I completely agree.

Four years ago the essayist Helen Andrews wrote a critique, for the religious journal First Things, of what she described as “bloodless moralism” — meaning the decay of public moral arguments into a kind of a vulgar empiricism, a mode of debate so cringingly utilitarian that it can’t advance the most basic ethical claim (“Do not steal …”) without a regression analysis to back it up (“… because bicycle thieves were 4 percent less likely to obtain gainful employment within two years of swiping their neighbor’s Schwinn”).

A Kansas candidate for Congress is brushing off accusations of being tone deaf and continuing a campaign promotion to give away an AR-15 rifle. Tyler Tannahill, a Republican candidate in Kansas’ second district, said the promotion was planned well before a gunman used the same weapon this week to kill 17 people at a high school in Florida.

Chasing gobblers in January will make you dress more like a late-season waterfowler than a turkey hunter. Temperatures were often in the teens when we first went afield each morning in Kansas, and only crept above freezing during the warmest parts of the day. To compensate, I donned the TrueTimber TrueSuede Insulated Bibs. The bibs are 100 percent polyester, and thus rather lightweight, but also sport a hearty and windproof design, which certainly came in handy in sub-freezing temperatures.

As the nation continues to talk about gun control, one local vendor says lately, they've seen more people buying guns. The people at T.P. Outdoors say people have been trying to buy guns before it may be too late. They say there hasn't been a strong spike in sales after the Florida shooting because it’s not the first time the topic of gun control has been brought up, but they say they've seen a slow increase in the last few months.

The deadly school shooting in Florida has revived discussion over gun control and highlighted Minnesota’s pending bills on the issue. The Pioneer Press reports that there are at least five bills currently on file this session relating to firearms or the Second Amendment. Rep. Jim Nash, R-Waconia, introduced a “stand your ground” bill that would allow lethal force to be used to stop felonies, regardless of whether a person is in their home or not.
