"A recent op-ed from Philadephia Inquirer columnist Karen Heller, entitled 'Where's the outrage about gun violence?' has me asking a few questions of my own: Where is the outrage about nutty anti-gun reporting? How can so many people who shovel provably false statements on their readers keep their jobs? And was columnist Karen Heller some type of Freudian pen name playing off of Hellen Keller? She is, after all, apparently just as blind, though clearly far less intelligent." ...

"But he won't be painting or drawing. He'll be shooting."

"Clark, 64, has been interested in firearms since he was a child ..."

"This interest led Clark to take several firearms courses in the last six years, and to be a contestant on a new reality TV show that tests marksmanship and strategy."

"Clark, who worked as an art teacher at Junction Avenue Middle School in Livermore for more than 40 years, recently participated on Front Sight Challenge, now showing on the Versus Network. In the show, 40 law enforcement officers go head-to-head against 40 highly trained ordinary people, Clark among them." ...

"Weidle said it's not the first time he's had to defend his store from would-be robbers."

"'I've had this happen before,' he said. 'I shot two guys in here in 2001. ...'" ...

The student showed the gun to a classmate near the end of the school day and someone told the principal about it."

"The student had transferred to North Gulfport from another Mississippi school district in January ..."

"Lawmakers in the Montana House of Representatives collectively thumbed their noses at the federal government Monday by approving two bills exempting guns from federal regulations and driver's licenses from national standardization requirements."

"The bills ... are driven by the same concern: the erosion of personal liberties by the federal government."

"Koopman said Monday his gun bill, House Bill 366, would inspire a home-grown industry of gun-makers who produce firearms to be sold in Montana. It also sends a message reaffirming states' rights." ...

"Koopman's HB 366 would exempt guns made in Montana from federal regulation under the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution, as long as the guns remain inside the state." ...

"Be not surprized therefore, that we, who are descended from the same common ancestors; that we, whose forefathers participated in all the rights, the liberties, and the constitution, you so justly boast [of], and who have carefully conveyed the same fair inheritance to us, guarantied by the plighted faith of government and the most solemn compacts with British Sovereigns, should refuse to surrender them to men, who found their claims on no principles of reason, and who prosecute them with a design, that by having our lives and property in their power, they may with the greater facility enslave you...."

"...The mad ambition, the lust of power, and commercial avarice, of Great Britain, arrogating to herself the complete dominion of the ocean, and exercising over it an unbounded and lawless tyranny, have left to neutral nations an alternative only between the base surrender of their rights, and a manly vindication of them. "The anti-gun op-ed by Dr. Clifford M. Herman ('Bowing down to NRA is dangerous,' Jan. 23) certainly fits in with the renewed push by the P-I for more gun laws. As with previous articles, this one demonizes the NRA, offers anecdotal insights and questions the meaning of the Second Amendment. What it does not do is address the essential question."

"Honest legislators must ask: Which gun laws, if any, will truly reduce violence? Thanks to the Clinton administration and the Centers for Disease Control, we have a pretty good idea. A group of scientists reviewed the extensive literature on the effectiveness of gun laws ... but they were unable to find convincing evidence that any gun laws have ever been effective." ...

"Assistant district attorney Jim Farrell made clear the policy of his office on gun incidents in Sullivan County. 'There will be no plea bargains,' he said. A new state law passed in November 2006 tripled the penalty for carrying a loaded unlicensed handgun. The law now calls for a minimum of three-and-a-half years in state prison for anyone 16 years or older."

"This came as a surprise to some community members who turned out to a meeting with law enforcement officials sponsored by the NAACP on January 25. Several audience members said that if teenagers knew the penalty, perhaps some of them would think twice about carrying a gun." ...
