Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Elizabeth Hautman joins host Rob Morse to talk about three new examples.
First story- It is late on a Saturday evening when you arrive home with your 12 year old daughter. A strange man comes out of a closet and attacks you.
Second story- You’re shopping late at night. Three men enter the store and announce a robbery. They shoot the store owner. You’re armed.
Third story- You hear the sound of breaking glass. You roll out of bed and grab your gun from your nightstand. You yell the intruder to leave your home. He shoots at you several times.
What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (15 minutes)

In the wake of last week’s mass shooting at a Florida high school and the outcry for more gun control by students and parents, Michigan legislators may start the Second Amendment debate by looking at bills that would keep weapons out of the hands of people with mental health problems.
At least 48 bills have been introduced to either expand or restrict access to guns and other weapons since the beginning of 2017. While most of the bills are stuck in legislative committees, unable to get a vote, two that deal specifically with removing guns from people who have mental health issues may take precedence over bills that will expand access to guns.

President Donald Trump, who came into office with support from the nation’s gun owners, has reportedly signed a memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions that directs the Department of Justice to propose regulations that could ban so-called “bump stock” devices, the Associated Press is reporting.
The president’s directive reportedly wants the Justice Department to “ban all devices” that increase the rate of fire of a semi-automatic rifle. Bump stocks were used by Steven Paddock during his Oct. 1, 2017 rampage in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead and hundreds injured. It is the only identified crime in which one of the accessory devices was used. |

If you’ve turned off your TV in disgust over coverage of the Parkland massacre, let me catch you up:
It’s the gun’s fault. It’s the President’s fault. It’s the NRA’s fault. It’s the FBI’s fault. It’s Gov. Scott’s fault. It’s DCF’s fault. It’s the (standard capacity) magazine’s fault. It’s the gun industry’s fault. It’s the gun dealer’s fault. It’s the ammunition’s fault. It’s the gun community’s fault. It’s the school’s fault. It’s the teachers’ fault. It’s society’s fault. |

The Supreme Court made clear again Tuesday that the government has broad power to restrict and regulate firearms, dismissing a 2nd Amendment challenge to California's 10-day waiting period for new gun purchases. While the court has ruled that the 2nd Amendment protects the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns, the justices have repeatedly refused to go further by blocking strict gun regulations, including state bans on the sale of semi-automatic weapons or limits on who can carry a weapon in public.

The latest poll from Quinnipiac University shows two thirds of Americans now support stricter gun laws, including half of gun owners. That's the highest level of support ever measured. A hunter since he was a kid, and a Marine for 20 years, Joe Plenzler was a proud member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). That's until he saw an ad last year that targeted opponents of the gun rights group.

Creating stricter gun laws in the wake of last week’s Florida school shooting can still ensure both personal safety and the right to bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment, said U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind. The shooting incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by a 19-year-old that resulted in the deaths of 17 people and the issue of gun control were among several topics the senator discussed Monday morning during a stop in Columbus at The Republic. |

Six days after a gunman murdered 17 students and adults at a Florida school, Pennsylvania lawmakers introduced 11 bills aimed at preventing similar mass shootings. One would ban assault weapons like the AR-15 used in the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The same weapon was used at mass shootings at a Las Vegas concert; Newtown, Conn., elementary school; Orlando night club; and a Texas church among others since 2012. |

A generation ago, had the school board in my small town scheduled a vote to potentially arm school staff and administrators, no one would have batted an eye. Back then, students in Mancos, Colorado, hung rifles in trucks for hunting before and after school. Guns were in the building; as recently as 1998, boys and girls took hunter safety classes in the middle school. When he was a teacher, now-school Superintendent Brian Hanson says he bought a gun from a student’s parent during math class. |
