After more than 21/2 years of wearing a global-positioning anklet that tracked his every move and having the public "look at me like a monster" for killing his best friend, 27-year-old Matthew Lisicki walked out of M
Multnomah County Circuit Court a free man Tuesday. In a one-minute ruling, Judge Linda Bergman found Lisicki not guilty of murdering Derek Bradley Rew when he shot him five times on April 25, 2004. Lisicki's attorneys had successfully argued that their client was defending himself when he shot his 22-year-old roommate because Rew was in a drunken rage and had threatened to kill him. |

Two gun rights bills breezed out of a legislative committee on Tuesday after a short discussion and little debate.
One would allow people to carry a gun in their cars on private property, such as a parking lot, even if the property owner otherwise bans guns.
The other was dubbed the "Katrina bill" after Hurricane Katrina. It would forbid government agencies from restricting the lawful possession or use of firearms during a declared state of emergency. |

“It’s a sleight of hand,” said Bob Barr, a former Georgia Congressman and champion of small government. “On issues that I consider extremely important to conservatives, such as respect for the Second Amendment, he is nowhere near even remotely in the ballpark of a conservative philosophy.” The famously resolute, plain-spoken and uncompromising former Mayor has unveiled new shades of nuance to go along with his historically liberal positions on abortion, gun control and gay marriage, which pose the major obstacles to his pursuit of the Republican nomination for President in 2008. |

Wal-Mart has stopped selling guns at all but a few of its New Hampshire stores. A survey of the state's 26 Wal-Mart Supercenters and discount stores yesterday revealed just eight stores with guns for sale. That total will soon shrink to five as Wal-Marts in Epping, Keene and Gorham deplete their existing stocks in the coming days or weeks.
...
Citing insufficient demand, the company began yanking firearms displays off its sales floor in late 2005. |

Billings Mayor Ron Tussing's leftist liberal streak has landed him in la-la land ... again. In August, Tussing joined "Mayors Against Illegal Guns", a liberal coalition founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Some of the stated principles of the group are: "Whereas: 30,000 Americans across the country are killed every year as a result of gun violence, destroying families and communities in big cities and small towns; Whereas: As Mayors, we are duty-bound to do everything in our power to protect our residents, especially our children, from harm and there is no greater threat to public safety than the threat of illegal guns." |

Earlier this month, we reported that plans to orchestrate an orderly transfer of power within the OhioGOP were under way, via the creation of the position of Deputy Chairman. We also noted that although he was not among those handpicked by OhioGOP Chairman Bob Bennett as a possible successor, State Representative Kevin DeWine (a three-time endorsee of this political action committee) had thrown his hat into the candidate's ring.
With an Ohio blogger reporting that Kevin DeWine "is a lock for the new position", new information from a Cleveland Plain Dealer blog post may indicate that Bennett has decided to avoid DeWine's election by trashing the deputy chairman idea altogether. |

The ISRA announced today that it is seeking injunctive relief against a gun ban recently enacted by the Cook County Board. In filing its complaint with the Cook County Circuit Court, the ISRA is asserting that compliance with the vaguely-worded ordinance would be impossible for most citizens of Cook County and, further, the method by which the ban was passed violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act. |
