The Washington State Legislature is considering a series of gun control measures that includes Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s assault weapon ban and a gun lock safety bill. One senator has introduced a measure that takes on the issue a different way, requiring liability insurance before someone can buy a gun. Sen. Maralyn Chase (D-Edmonds) says people have to buy insurance for their homes, their cars, and other items, so having it for guns makes sense to her. |

Following news that congress has moved to do away with a screening process for mentally ill gun buyers, one of New Jersey’s leading Democrats is denouncing the move. Local legislators agree with waves of constituents and law enforcement officials who have called in opposing a bill moving through the Legislature titled “Background Checks for Gun Transfers.” In both houses, local legislators believe the background checks in the bill go too far for Grant County gun owners. New Mexico Senate Bill 48 is set for a vote on the Senate floor today. New Mexico House Bill 50, its mirror image in the other legislative house, has already failed to find as much support as sponsors wished and has been pushed back into the House Judiciary Committee.

A bill filed Tuesday by a trio of N.C. House Republicans seeks to drop a provision in the state constitution that prohibits secession. Another would repeal the constitutional requirement that voters be able to read. ... A third would change the line that says a North Carolina citizen “owes paramount allegiance to the Constitution and government of the United States” by taking out the word “government.” And a fourth would repeal the section in the state constitution that allows the state to regulate the concealed carrying of weapons. ... Voters would decide on the amendment in the November 2018 election.
