A Randolph County magistrate has closed the case against Steven Snider in the shooting death of Leslie Woodford.
Authorities arrested Snider after police said Woodford burst into his home, tried to shoot him and Snider fired back.
At that hearing, Randolph County Prosecutor Frank Bush moved to dismiss the case against Snider, saying the evidence indicates the shooting was done in self defense.
That case has raised questions about what is self defense. |

The best possible Republican presidential candidate for conservatives to unite behind would clearly be longtime conservative champion Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX). Paul has been rated as the most conservative member of Congress by at least one notable conservative publication and is certainly the most conservative GOP presidential candidate in the running. Congressman Paul, probably more than anyone else in Congress today, exemplifies the old NFRA motto of “principle over party.” He is the only candidate on the Republican side who can say that he was right about the Iraq war from the beginning. His warnings and misgivings with regards to going to war in Iraq dating back to 2002 seem near-prescient in retrospect... |

"I have again introduced legislation to permanently ban assault weapons. These weapons have no practical use. They are not used by hunters for sport or by individuals for self-defense. They are intended to kill as many individuals as possible in a short amount of time and have no place on our streets. The unfortunate situation in Philadelphia could have been avoided if Congress stood up to the gun lobby in 2004. |

THERE IS A bit of a rift going on in the outdoor sporting world between hunters and gun enthusiasts, which sometimes are one in the same.
The raucousness started when longtime outdoors writer Jim Zumbo of Outdoor Life magazine posted a story online that said assault rifles -- he also called them terrorist rifles -- had no place in the hunting community, even suggesting that game departments ban them from the prairies and woods. |

It is widely believed that the passage of the "assault weapons" ban in 1994 was the leading factor in what lead to a Republican majority in the House and Senate during the mid-term election that followed. In 2004, when the "assault weapons" ban was scheduled to sunset, there were clamors to renew the ban and make it permanent. Such efforts were defeated due to overwhelming awareness and concern about this issue on behalf of the American people.
Since the ban has been repealed, Americans are free to own whatever semi-automatic rifle they choose... |

In your lead editorial Tuesday, "Gunning for legislation," you emphasize the "awesome responsibility" and the "gravamen" of gun ownership and that the "public has the right to know who has availed himself of that responsibility." For those who have not been raised with weapons, the mere fact of their existence may seem daunting and engender a sense of danger, but for many of us, the ownership, care and intelligent use of these weapons are as natural as driving to work in the morning. Your judgment reflects, I suggest, limited experience in this regard and warrants much careful thought before urging government to impose your views on what is arguably the single most law-abiding group of citizens in the county. |

From time to time I end up having a heated argument with some members of my gun club about our Second Amendment rights. This is always about their need to get involved in the fight to protect the Second Amendment. ...They tell me that they are not worried about the Government coming to get their guns. After all it is just a .22 rifle or double barrel 12 gauge. ...So they won't bother to make the effort to make a call or write a letter to Congress or other politicians as they don't think their guns are threatened...
Well, for those of this mindset it is time for you to wake up and smell reality. The antis are now openly admitting they want grandpappy's .22, and I am not kidding. |

Usually, when you enact a successful plan, you tend to repeat it in the future, expecting the same positive result. Unless, of course, you're talking politics. In that case, it's customary for some politicians to simply do whatever will get the vote, regardless of whether or not the outcome is beneficial or detrimental to the country. Some candidates disregard the importance of what's right for American citizens, try to appease the people who have the most influence in their future and pray to the heavens they won't be the candidate conceding the election over the phone. Why settle for pride when you can have power? |

Kenly -- A former police chief in the small Johnston County town of Kenly was arrested Wednesday morning on embezzlement charges, authorities said.
State Bureau of Investigation agents charged David Mangum with four counts of embezzlement of property received by virtue of office or employment. Mangum was released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.
The arrest followed an SBI investigation that began last October at the request of former Johnston County District Attorney Tom Lock.
David Mangum, who had served as police chief for five years, was fired Sept. 30 after Kenly Town Council members learned of charges for a Carnival cruise, stays in two different Outer Banks hotels and clothing purchases on his town-issued credit card. |

Smith & Wesson's popular auto pistol has been chopped for concealed carry. Spurred by the liberalization of concealed carry laws in some of our more enlightened states, the quest for the perfect carry gun goes on. There is a slug of pretty good revolvers, autos and derringers out there--just about anything to suit your fancy, really--so one sometimes wonders if the makers can keep coming out with anything that's that much better than what's already available. |

"...Every act of the legislature repugnant to the Constitution is, ipso facto, void; and it is the duty of the court so to declare it..."
"...In America, the ease is widely different. Every state of the Union has its constitution, reduced to written exactitude. A constitution is the form of government delineated by the mighty hand of the people, in which certain first principles of fundamental law are established. The Constitution is certain and fixed; it contains the permanent will of the people, and is the supreme law of the land; it is paramount to the power of the legislature, and can be revoked or altered only by the power that made it. The life-giving principle and the death-dealing stroke must proceed from the same hand..." |

Tony Blair was accused of trying to "spin" his way out of Britain's gun crime crisis today after it emerged his promised new firearms laws were already in place. The Prime Minister complained yesterday that five-year jail sentences for possessing illegal guns did not apply to under-21s and warned: "We've got to lower that age." He is also due to hold a summit on gun crime with police chiefs next month. But the Tories pointed out today that the Criminal Justice Act 2003 does indeed impose mandatory prison terms for over-18s caught with a firearm. The courts have since intervened to state that under-21s should be sent to detention centres rather than jail.

Police in Boston were by far the city's top earners last year, with 25 Police Department employees earning more than $200,000, nearly four times the number who made that amount in 2005, according to city payroll figures released to the Globe.
Police have long been big earners in Boston, where a powerful union and private detail work have helped boost pay. But in 2006, the amounts were higher than in recent years.
In 2006, the average uniformed police officer made $113,617, including $35,600 in detail and overtime pay, according to figures provided by city budget officials. Firefighters, on average, made $91,087 in 2006, including about $12,500 in overtime and detail pay. The average teacher made $62,195 in total pay. |

"A laser developed for military use is a few steps away from hitting a power threshold thought necessary to turn it into a battlefield weapon.
Potentially, lasers could destroy rockets, mortars or roadside bombs."
Submitter's note: or vehicles, homes, and people, whom will almost certainly be denied the right to own one of these weapons. |
