"...The 'low' murder rate of 69 to 100,000 in Washington, D.C., where firearms can not be owned, must be due to strict gun limits, and the 'high' murder rate of 9 to 100,000 in the city of Indianapolis, in a shall-issue state, must be due to lack of gun limits..."

"It's a bill courtesy of Sen. Jim Dyer, R-Littleton, who professes to want nothing more than to make gun laws conform statewide. He wants the same gun laws in a mountain redoubt and on the 16th Street Mall. He worries - oh, he worries - that some poor soul who hails from a part of the state where a Lexus comes fitted with a gun rack will wander unsuspecting into Denver. And, faced with big-city justice, he'll inadvertently break a law and spend the rest of his life behind bars."

"Within the next several years, according to the plan, 20,000 Libertarians would move to a single state and begin infiltrating. They'd get jobs, join civic groups, get elected and take a hatchet to taxes and laws. In this utopia called the Free State Project, schools would be severed from the state, gun-control laws abolished, drugs legalized, health and social services privatized, most federal aid rejected. Government's only job would be to protect against 'force and fraud.' "

One dealer is quoted as saying, "With the gun shows, they can go in and at least 50 percent of the dealers are not licensed dealers." He claims that "with the frequent gun shows coming through town, especially during hunting season, felons can purchase weapons from unscrupulous gun sellers."

Once again there's a need to point out that were it that easy for a felon to purchase a gun at a gun show, more than the current 2 percent who get guns there would be doing so.

"Since June 2000, Louisville police have fatally shot six people. In the five years ending in December, nine were shot and killed in the city. In the 10 cities that were closest to Louisville's size, only one had more fatal shootings by police in that time."

"Five experts who reviewed summaries of the six most recent cases, prepared by The Courier-Journal, found in most instances the shootings were justified because the officers believed their lives or the lives of other officers were threatened."

"But the experts also found that the fatalities might have been avoided if police had been better trained, had not made procedural errors and had avoided practices that have been prohibited in some other departments."

"My own experience has taught me that I can't, and don't want to, sidestep my own Americanness in order to placate the country's blunter critics, who frequently make fewer distinctions among us than we like to make among ourselves. What feels from within like a national crazy quilt of opinions and sensibilities can look like a monotone blanket from abroad, but there comes a point when resisting being lumped this way amounts to self-betrayal. I'd prefer to define myself on my own terms, and America has always let me do that, but certain anti-Americans aren't so kind: they insist that I be their worst nightmare or be nothing. This is a dangerous choice to force on someone, especially when he's already feeling threatened by mortal, not just cultural, enemies. Corner the boy, unleash the bully -- that's another way to say it. There's more Merle Haggard in me than I knew, I discovered at Oxford, and the harder I'm pressed to deny him, the louder he sings."

"Lena Baker claimed she was being held against her will by a drunken white man and acted in self-defense when she wrested his gun away and shot him."

"For a black maid in the segregated South in 1944, her defense was a tough sell to a jury of 12 white men. And rumors that she was romantically involved with victim E.B. Knight didn’t help. Her murder trial lasted just a day, without a single witness called by her court-appointed lawyer."

"Ultimately, the greatest long-run threat to the freedom of any people is its own government, which possesses the legitimized right to use force and the threat of force against them in its own territory. If history has taught anything, it is that once freedoms have been lost by a people, regaining those lost freedoms from their own government is no easy task. The first duty, therefore, is to prevent those freedoms from being taken away."

Officer Eagle said Balandin (naked and tripping on LSD) was trying to take his gun, but there were no fingerprints on the gun, no pictures showing the scratches on the officer's face, and forensic evidence shows that the first shot was fired from 2 - 3 feet, and the second from 6 feet, as Mr. Balandin was falling.

Like a recreational drug user enjoying that first chemical rush, those who created the federal Reserve luxuriated in the seemingly endless flow of money pouring forth from the Federal Reserve, money used to prolong and consolidate power, money spent without worry in the full knowledge that it was going to be someone else's problem to pay it all back."

"How can any good person be willing to ruin his fellow citizen's life because that citizen used the 'wrong' dried plant matter in his cigarettes? How could a good person who walks around with a high-capacity autopistol on his hip arrest a citizen for carrying an old revolver without feeling like a complete hypocrite? How can a good person harass peaceable citizens over the countless intrusive, freedom-sapping laws without feeling like a total heel?"
