"At least 21 states are considering 'Stand Your Ground' legislation similar to Florida`s law that allows citizens fearing an attack to use deadly force."

"Supporters of such measures tell the Christian Science Monitor that the laws give citizens protection from criminals and take the debate from gun control to crime control. Those opposed warn garden-variety disputes would be more likely to turn deadly, the Monitor said."

"The law is at odds with the long-standing 'duty to retreat' theory many state supreme courts upheld, the Monitor said, pointing out, however, that a 1921 U.S. Supreme Court ruling did not support 'duty to retreat.' "

Babst declined to identify the detective."

"When the detective left to seek help, someone broke a window and stole her purse and its contents. With the help of an informant, her gun, badge and ID were recovered after a few days, and the thief eventually was convicted.

"Taking youngsters hunting is tantamount to child abuse on so many levels: the actual physical risk, and the hardening of feelings towards wild animals that could easily slosh over to people as well."

"In this case, the depraved indifference to human suffering is far beyond what we are used to hearing about. Those of us who care about wild animals know that atrocities are committed against wild animals that we don't hear about in the paper. There are no witnesses who can describe what happens, and there's no law against it. We hear our worst nightmares confirmed only rarely."

Anne Muller of New Paltz is a member of the Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting.

"The debate over Michigan's gun laws has intensified as a legislative committee heard testimony this week on a bill supporters say would give law-abiding people more self-defense rights in certain situations."

"Gun control groups say the bills are reckless and could create a public safety hazard by fostering a shoot-first, ask-questions-later mentality."

"The bills would establish a presumption of reasonable fear of death or injury when a law-abiding person uses force in certain circumstances. A threatened person would have no duty to retreat and would be able to meet force with force in situations such as a home invasion or, in certain situations, a carjacking."

" 'Put the law back on the side of the victim, where it belongs,' John C. Sigler, the NRA's first vice president, urged Thursday at a gun-rights rally in the Capitol Rotunda."

"Before the Legislature was a bill entitled, 'Duty to Retreat' (HB 46). The intention of this bill was to provide immunity for anyone using 'physical or deadly force' when defending 'person, premises, or property' in the 'commission of a crime.' Should it become law, this bill would send a message that violence is an accepted way of life in Wyoming. The Wyoming Association of Churches is on record as opposing this piece of legislation because it is immoral as well as unnecessary."

From Field & Stream's David E. Petzal:

"About 10 years ago, Swarovski Optik brought forth upon this continent a new riflescope, equipped with a laser rangefinder, weighing almost as much as a rifle, and costing as much as a trip to Africa. But so appealing was the idea that the scopes actually sold. And those of us who were paying attention knew that it would be only a matter of time until someone developed a rangefinding scope that was light, simple to use, and affordable."

"New York's finest, led by Commissioner Kelly, have made the city's streets safer by taking a major alleged gun trafficking ring out of commission, but New Yorkers will still need to be vigilant lest politicians try to turn lemonade into lemons. The lesson from Sunday's raid, in which an 11-month investigation netted six arrests and the seizure of 116 guns, is that the people who engage in criminal gun smuggling are, well, criminals and that we have laws and lawmen to deal with them."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
