Since the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the left has once again taken up its two-pronged attack on the Second Amendment: pushing additional gun control legislation in Congress and flooding the news and internet with anti-gun articles – many of which are merely clever works of fiction. To combat the falsity – such as the myriad articles “debunking” the “good guy with a gun myth” – Liberty Nation will highlight six real stories focusing on incidents that would have gone horrifyingly differently had some good guy with a gun not intervened. There were a plethora of events to pick from, but each story in this series was chosen to demonstrate a particular point.

Smut, not guns, is the great risk to teenagers. So say Florida lawmakers, who - days after one of the deadliest school massacres in history occurred on their doorstep, as the child survivors of that massacre watched from the gallery - refused to consider a bill banning assault-style rifles. About an hour later, those same legislators passed a resolution declaring that pornography endangers teenage health. Say what you will about porn, but to my knowledge, it has not been used to slaughter teens.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is vowing to sign gun control bills as part of a campaign promise and in response to the fatal Florida school shooting. But for now, he is pledging a policy review and interstate cooperation over firearms. The timing for when the Democrat might act on any bills is unclear. The Legislature has introduced at least two dozen measures related to firearms. Many are aimed at controlling the use of guns, though some would expand rights.

On the show floor over the weekend, signs advertised AR-15's and high capacity magazines for sale. Both have become the target of Florida gun control advocates who want to see them banned.

Maryland educators are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s call for more armed adults in schools while saying they’re open to new ideas about how to make school facilities more secure following last week’s shooting in Florida that left 17 people dead. Maryland’s state superintendent will convene an emergency meeting Monday of the Maryland Center for School Safety board to discuss ways to “ensure that every resource available is being used to make schools safe.” Superintendent Karen Salmon also said more should be done to support and counsel troubled students.

Refusing to "infringe" on Second Amendment rights and stopping short of "banning specific weapons," Gov. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is working to pass some gun control legislation in his state – because "I'm a dad." "I'm going to do what I can to make sure guns are not in the hands of the wrong people," Scott told "Fox News Sunday." "If you have mental illness you shouldn't have a gun. If you've threatened yourself or threaten others, you shouldn't have a gun.

Today, readers on the culture, psychology, and politics of regulating guns. Really, pay attention to Australia—white-male privilege and all. Several previous messages have referred to Australia’s modern experience with guns. In short: After the mass-casualty “Port Arthur massacre” of 1996, a conservative government (technically, the Liberal party) changed gun policy, and since then Australia has had its share of gun violence but no remotely comparable massacres. By contrast, the five deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history, and 7 of the 10 worst, have all happened since 1996.

After the murders in a Florida public high school, President Trump said we should allow some school staff to be armed. The Socialists were entirely predictable in the way they responded. They projected their personal fantasies onto armed teachers.
That isn’t necessary because we already know how armed teachers behave. We have armed teachers in schools today and have collected several thousand man-years of experience.
This is what we know. |

As a national debate over gun regulation and school safety rages across the nation following a deadly school shooting in Florida, hundreds packed the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi Saturday to check out handguns, semi-automatic rifles, antique firearms, knives and ammunition.
The Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. left 17 people dead and sparked a national student-led movement to intensify gun control.
That same debate has been going on for at least 50 years, said Novi Gun & Knife Show organizer Doug Carl, who was skeptical Saturday whether any law could have stopped what he described as a “deranged” shooter in Florida.

In what may go down as the most callous and telling action of the Washington Legislature, at the same time they were introducing a bill to ratchet down on the gun rights of young adults, they were passing legislation to exempt themselves from Public Records Act disclosures.
A number of people attending the weekend Washington Arms Collectors (WAC) gun show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds are aware of both moves. The consensus is, “If it weren’t for double standards, they’d have no standards at all.” |

More than two dozen people — some holding pieces of paper with the names of school children killed by gun violence and others chanting “Shame” — protested outside a Friends of the NRA fundraiser Saturday at the Yakima Convention Center. “I’m here because what presumably started as a benign hobby organization turned into a vile, violent, paranoid, racist, right-wing, conspiracy group that’s somehow managed to scare and pay people off to keep sensible regulations from being imposed on guns,” said Sidney Dolquist, a local business owner who was among some 30 protesters.

This is a column about 42 percent of Republicans. It is also a column about trust. A few days ago in Miami, the Knight Foundation, a philanthropic institution, convened a conference of journalists, tech persons, business persons and others to consider the state and future of journalism. Central to the gathering was a study conducted by Gallup and Knight measuring American attitudes toward news media. |

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo is signing an executive order establishing a so-called "red flag" policy to prevent people from having guns if they are deemed a danger to themselves or others. Raimondo plans to sign it Monday. She said this month's shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, has renewed the urgency once again for states to act to prevent gun violence. Seventeen people were killed. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' The right of the whole people, old and young, men, women and boys, and not militia only, to keep and bear arms of every description, and not such merely as are used by the militia, shall not be infringed, curtailed, or broken in upon, in the smallest degree; and all this for the important end to be attained: the rearing up and qualifying a well-regulated militia, so vitally necessary to the security of a free State. Our opinion is that any law, State or Federal, is repugnant to the Constitution, and void, which contravenes this right. [Nunn vs. State, 1 Ga. (1 Kel.) 243, at 251 (1846)] |
