You can’t say that there was no warning. Last year, Ammoland discussed how our rights would be at risk with Jerrold Nadler as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. At the time, I noted, “In terms of his voting record, Nadler is just as bad as Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein. There is one major difference – he has just been much more low-key, and as a result, he is under the radar.” |

Latin America has a gang problem. The violence of the region’s drug cartels is well known to the point of Hollywood cliché, but the violence of newer gangs like MS-13 and Barrio 18 in Central America, or First Capital Command in Brazil, has been less appreciated. With levels of violent crime across the region soaring, this is starting to change. |

Shortly after taking back control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrats are making a significant push to enact major gun control legislation. House Democrats are set to pass a bill requiring so-called “universal background checks” at the federal level, which would effectively outlaw private sales throughout the country. That bill—H.R. 8, or the “Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019”—would require that all transfers of firearm possession occur only after a federal background check has been conducted. On its face, this may seem like a reasonable idea, but on closer examination, none of the claims from gun control proponents backing this bill holds water. |

Family members, school administrators and law enforcement officials can seek to get guns confiscated from people deemed by courts to be an “extreme risk” to themselves or others, under legislation signed Monday. The “red flag” law, as it’s called, takes effect in 180 days. The Legislature overwhelmingly passed the measure, along with other gun control initiatives, in late January. The other bills – including changes to the gun purchase background check process, bans on bump stock devices and from teachers being able to possess weapons on school grounds – have not yet been acted upon by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. |

At a gathering in Seattle on Valentine’s Day, Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson gave warning to state law enforcement leaders who vocalized plans to disregard Initiative 1639. On the anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the governor was joined by gun violence advocates at the University Heights Center. On an upper floor, a discussion on gun reform happened. Below, children laughed and classrooms hushed, in the center that acts as a community hub for learning-and-arts programs. Together they remembered the loss of 17 students last February in Parkland, Florida.

Very few people disagree with the idea that certain individuals should not be allowed to legally access firearms. Federal law reflects this general consensus by barring felons and those with histories of serious mental health problems from legally purchasing or possessing firearms unless their civil rights have been restored. |

As Congress considers H.R. 8, let’s consider some of the arguments made in support of so-called “universal” background checks. Anti-gun organizations regularly claim that criminals acquire firearms online. Everytown and its predecessor, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, have published a number of “reports” that claim to have found evidence of prohibited people attempting to buy firearms through websites that “could potentially” transfer tens of thousands of guns. This last statement, of course, chooses hyperbole over reality.

An Illinois senator wants the Land of Lincoln to become the fifth state to ban firearms at the polling place. State Sen. Ann Gillespie (D-Arlington Heights) said twenty percent of Illinois polling places are in buildings not designated as “gun-free zones.” “If Texas can see the problem with people bringing guns to vote, then so can Illinois,” said Gillespie. “In these times of intense political division, it’s understandable that people would be concerned about their safety at voting sites. Voters should leave their guns at home. It’s as simple as that.”

Love it or hate it, the 9 mm has ascended to the throne as the current king of carry-gun cartridges, and one of the most-popular delivery systems is the Glock G19. This handgun is listed as a “compact” size by Glock, in contrast to the larger G17. For many, it strikes the perfect balance for ease of carry while asking no compromise when shooting. This pistol has become a favorite with a lot of people who carry every day; both on the law enforcement and civilian sides of the spectrum. |

Tensions can rise high during domestic disputes. Due to the quick thinking of one gentleman in Clarkesville, Ind., two women were spared from harm. A woman who lives in the area ran from her apartment with her daughter after arguing with an assailant. He followed the pair into the parking lot, hitting and kicking the two women. A neighbor intervened in the assault and held the man at bay with his firearm while the women escaped. The armed neighbor warned the bully to stay back as he proceeded to act aggressively. Whereupon, the Good Samaritan fired in self-defense, fatally ending the altercation. |

This is fake news pretending to inform us. This noise fills airtime. We see shows like this because it sells soap for the network. As long as the guests and the host yell loud enough. The discussion about guns in America is too important to leave to the talking heads. For the average person like me, it is hard to separate real information about guns from the Hollywood stories I have floating around in my head. When you look at how you feel about guns and crime, are you responding to what you know, or to what you saw on the little screen during some cop drama? |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
