NRA Director Sen. Larry Craig's Ammunition Ban Amendment

"While National Rifle Association officials have been denying that they've been orchestrating a sellout in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) -- an NRA Director -- has been working on an ammunition ban. On the Senate floor today, he introduced, discussed, defended and tried to justify the 'Craig/Frist' amendment. This amendment, said Craig, is needed 'to strengthen current armor piercing ammunition law.' NRA's point-man in the U.S. Senate says that this is 'what the law enforcement community needs.' "

" 'We don't want to wipe out the hunting and sporting ammunition,' said Craig. The 'sporting purpose' test was used before -- as justification for firearm rights infringements via the 1938 Nazi Weapons Law ..." ...

Senate OKs Handgun Locks Legislation

"The GOP-controlled Senate voted 70-27 to require all handguns sold in the United States to have child safety locks, adding the measure to the legislation providing the gun industry immunity from suits when a legally sold gun is subsequently used in a crime."

"Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California and Herb Kohl of Wisconsin argued that requiring child safety locks on newly purchased handguns would help reduce the number of children accidentally killed by handguns in the home. Every 48 hours, a child is killed through an accidental shooting, Boxer said."

Is there no low to which they won't stoop, no lie they won't tell to foist more government control upon us? (Rhetorical question. No need to reply.)

"Senate Democrats hope to complicate the future of a Republican-led bill that would shield gun manufacturers and distributors from lawsuits arising from crimes in which guns were used." ...

"Renewing the 1994 prohibition against "assault weapons" has been a Democrat priority this year. They picked up support Tuesday from GOP Sens. John Warner of Virginia, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.

" 'Although I voted against the ban a decade ago, over the past 10 years it has reduced crime dramatically and has made our streets safer,' Warner said. 'The legislation also has protected the rights of gun owners better than many of us predicted.' "

-------
Again we remind you, Virginians, to keep these blatant lies from Warner in mind when casting votes next time he runs for reelection.

"A Senate measure to extend federal unemployment benefits failed by two votes Thursday despite the election year support of 12 Republicans from states hit hard by layoffs."

"Democrats tried to attach the amendment to a gun liability bill, but it failed 58-39 in the GOP-controlled Senate."

"The measure would have extended the emergency benefits program for six months, providing 13 weeks of extra unemployment benefits to people who exhaust their state benefits - usually after 26 weeks."

-------
Have they attached the kitchen sink to the liability bill yet? Seems they've tried to attach every other insanity to it.

Senate to Vote on S. 253; The 'Steve Young Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act' Debated in Senate, Vote Expected Tuesday

"Chuck Canterbury, national president of the Grand Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, urged all F.O.P. members and other law enforcement officers to contact their Senators and ask them to vote in favor of Senate Amendment 2623, the 'Steve Young Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act,' which was offered today to S. 1805, the 'Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.' "

"The amendment is virtually identical to the F.O.P.'s top legislative priority, S. 253, and would exempt qualified active and retired law enforcement officers from State and local prohibitions with respect to the carrying of concealed firearms."

-------
In other words, it would create an elite class of citizen.

"Officers who are traveling from one jurisdiction to another do not leave their instincts or training behind, but without their weapon, their knowledge and training is rendered virtually useless in a time of emergency..."

Trained and responsible gun owners also do not leave their knowledge and training behind, but why should they be denied, while the LEOs get to exercise their right to keep and bear arms nationwide?

"The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Missouri Legislature had the authority to permit citizens to carry concealed guns, but it also ruled the law does not have to be enforced in four counties where it was shown to impose an unfunded mandate."

"The ruling also opens a way for similar unfunded mandate claims to be made in other counties, raising the possibility of a piecemeal enforcement of the contentious new law."

"Supporters and opponents of concealed gun rights both claimed victory in the mixed decision."

-------
Well, get rid of the background checks, and that will get rid of the majority of the "unfunded mandate". The antis will be happy, then, right?

"The Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the general constitutionality of a law allowing most adult Missourians to carry concealed guns, but prohibited its enforcement in four counties where the court said it would impose an unfunded mandate." ...

"Enacted when legislators overrode Democratic Gov. Bob Holden's veto, the law allows Missourians age 23 and older to receive concealed gun permits from their local sheriffs after passing criminal background checks, firearms training courses and paying a fee of up to $100."

"The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today congratulated the Missouri Supreme Court for its intellectual honesty in ruling that there is no constitutional prohibition against carrying concealed firearms, thus upholding the Legislature's override of Gov. Bob Holden's veto last year."

" 'This is great news for the law-abiding citizens of Missouri, who may now join citizens in 46 other states in legally carrying firearms for their personal protection,' said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron. 'Thanks to the intellectual honesty of Missouri's high court, the arguments of anti-self-defense fanatics who desperately tried to stop this law have been shown to be without merit.' "

"...when it comes to voting behavior, gun control is the Gettysburg of the culture wars. Except for one thing: the Democrats have already retreated." ...

"This is an important piece of legislation because lawsuits brought by victims of gun violence and by municipalities, have become perhaps the most effective tactic in pushing for increased gun control and regulation, especially as advocates lose more and more battles in legislatures."

"A1083 requires:

"Upon the death of an owner of a firearm, the administrator or executor of the estate shall turn over custody of the firearm to the chief law enforcement officer of the municipality in which the decedent resided"

"In other words, while the widow is grieving, she will have to
GO TO THE POLICE STATION TO DROP OFF HER DECEASED HUSBAND'S GUN COLLECTION OR ELSE BECOME A FELON!"

"How nice of Assemblywomen Weinberg being so thoughtful at the widow's time of need!"

Also note: (1) the bill conflicts with federal law by interfering with interstate transfer via inheritance and (2) it turns police stations into gun storage facilities so now the police can spend even less time fighting crime and more time doing paperwork and acting as temporary gun shops!

Laurens Police Chief Rodney Watkins was arrested Sunday on domestic abuse assault charges.

The mayor placed Watkins on administrative leave and appointed Phil Queen as acting police chief.

Two other officers will cover Watkins' shifts for the next couple of weeks.

Under Iowa law, a police officer convicted of domestic assault cannot carry a gun.

Watkins made national headlines last October when he asked a teenager to stop riding his wheelchair in the streets. Watkins said he was concerned about the boy's safety and threatened him with fines.

Last week, the Iowa Senate approved a bill clarifying a transportation policy that allows disabled Iowans to use motorized wheelchairs when and where they need.

"The American public should know that a small number of federally licensed gun dealers supplied one of every five guns traced to crimes nationwide yet remain in business. People should know that guns used in 52 fatal shootings and other crimes were traced to one gun shop in Washington state that already had multiple violations of the law. That was before the same shop sold the rifle used by convicted Washington, D.C., sniper John Muhammad and teenage sidekick Lee Malvo to kill 16 people in five states in 2002."

"The public won't have access to this information anymore because Congress last month barred the release of such data to the public in the latest cave-in to the gun lobby. A little-publicized measure attached to a spending bill that funds major government agencies forbids the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from making public information about the AFT's [sic] records on tracing the source of guns used in crimes. Law enforcement agencies still have access to tracing information, but not the public."

"Gun ownership is extremely important to some people, and often they're not aware of why. To most, the gun means added power, something that erases all feelings of inferiority, weakness, vulnerability and impotence. It's not irrelevant that guns, in themselves, are so frequently linked to sexuality and the male sex organ. Think of the many slang terms common to both sex and guns, and the relationship becomes obvious. Guns have been accurately called 'the great equalizer.' "

"Some of this exaggerated need for protection -- and fear of what might happen were they not to have this -- might have been carried over from experiences in early childhood, at a time when they truly were weak, small and vulnerable to attack. If a boy were abused or brutalized in his youth by bullies or by bullying parents, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he might still bear feelings of anger and resentment and a desire for an assurance that no one could ever humiliate or hurt him again."

-------
Chances of you having a house fire are likely miniscule, Is your need of a fire extinguisher exaggerated.

How about people who live in gated communities. Many of them have intruder alarms. Are their fears exaggerated?

In her inane attempt in trying to link feelings of inadequacy, sexual and otherwise, to human beings exercising their basic human rights, Dr. Brothers reveals much more about herself than she does about gun owners.

"A lawyer representing three students wounded during a deadly shooting rampage at the Appalachian School of Law suggested today that prosecutors are offering a plea agreement to the alleged shooter partly to keep embarrassing facts about the school hidden." ...

"Yeary said the plea agreement, which would put Odighizuwa in prison for life, would curtail any investigation into the school's culpability in the shootings. In lawsuits seeking $22.8 million, the students allege that school administrators knew Odighizuwa was dangerous, but allowed him to continue classes despite failing grades because they needed minority students to help the school reach accreditation requirements." ...

"Some of these facts could certainly be extremely embarrassing and incriminating to the law school and certain people..."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

D.C.'s police chief says Senator Orrin Hatch will give some thought to withdrawing his amendment that would overturn the city's handgun ban - but made no promises.

Charles Ramsey and Mayor Anthony Williams met with the Utah Republican Wednesday asking him not to try to repeal the city's handgun ban. Hatch's amendment is part of a bill that would protect gun manufacturers from lawsuits over gun crimes. The bill has already won the support of 75 senators in a test vote.

Ramsey says that Hatch has expressed a desire to work alongside city officials on the issue. Ramsey says it should be up to the city to change its laws - not congressman from other parts of the country.

A federal judge upheld D.C.'s gun ban in January, dismissing a lawsuit by a group of citizens backed by the National Rifle Association.

"The armed robbery of a rookie driver for GG's Taxi happened the same day prosecutors tried to wrap up a case involving a spree of cab-jackings that terrorized Fitchburg taxi drivers a year ago."

" 'Now all my drivers are nervous,' said David Bourke, a driver and owner of GG's Taxi."

"Bourke does not believe there is anything drivers or his company, GG's Taxi, can do to keep drivers safe from cab-jackings."

" 'There is no protection,' said Bourke. 'Taxi drivers need to be allowed to carry mace or get an FID (Firearm Identification) card.' "

"Rep. James Langevin played host on Monday to a panel discussion on the controversial USA Patriot Act. The six experts and activists on the stage at North Kingstown High School argued back and forth over some of the provisions in the act and whether or not it infringes upon the civil liberties protected in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights."

"But both the pro-Patriot Act and the anti-Patriot Act panelists glossed over the most important topic of all, the pervasive climate of fear and suspicion that enveloped the nation in the weeks and months after Sept. 11."

"While most Americans favor the idea of the U.S. Patriot Act, many don't know what it says or does, it was reported Thursday."

"With its poll showing widespread support of the idea, USA Today says there is a widespread confusing, troubling feeling about the law that gives federal agents more latitude to spy on U.S. citizens and non-citizens while hunting terrorists."

"The Republican-led state Senate is rejecting Gov. George Pataki's plan to increase handgun permit fees and to close the Middletown Psychiatric Center, a state lawmaker and spokesman for Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said Thursday."

"Senate Republicans will not go along with Pataki's plan to add a $100 fee for the state when handgun permits are issued and a $25 state fee every time a pistol is added to the permit, said Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican from Orange County. Bruno spokesman Mark Hansen later confirmed his boss's opposition to the fee increase."

The robbery was the second at the Albion in the past six months.

A balaclava-clad man with a shotgun took a large sum of cash in a holdup at Labour Day weekend.

Detective Sergeant Peter Steward said police would look for any correlation between the robberies.

"So, state Sen. Mike Waddoups introduced Senate Bill 48 in order to strip the University of Utah of its right to keep concealed weapons off its campus. Then he opposed an amendment to the bill that would allow private property owners to ban guns from their own premises."

"Waddoups says such restrictions would create a big problem for the state's 50,000-odd (pun intended) concealed-carry permit holders. Did it ever occur to him that having 50,000 paranoid, would-be Rambos (remember pistol-shootin' former legislator David Bresnahan?) running around might be a big problem for the rest of us 2 million Utahns?"

-------
And did it ever occur to this letter writer that calling those who choose to carry concealed paranoid, while ignoring the fact that concealed carry has not caused a problem in ANY of the states in the Union, is the height of hypocrisy?

"A man who ran a 'major firearm conversion factory' in his terrace home was jailed today for nine years."

"Jobless Paul Henry Packham was found with an illegal cache of weapons, ammunition and drugs – including stun guns, CS spray canisters and more than 60 pistols – at his home."

"Officers also found two hydroponic systems for growing cannabis, and a workshop equipped to convert blank firing guns into lethal weapons, together with facilities to make ammunitions for the converted handguns."

"The arsenal and cannabis factory were found during an early morning raid on November 6 last year by detectives and specialist firearms officers from the Met’s Central Task Force."

-------
In the "gun-free" UK? This just proves that despite the ban, where there is a demand, there will always be a supply.

"The officers, David Lemongello and Kenneth McGuire, blame the gun industry for their shooting. Last year, they filed a lawsuit in Kanawha Circuit Court seeking monetary damages from Will Jewelry and Sturm, Ruger & Co., the company that made Everett's gun."

"In recent years, such lawsuits have provoked a firestorm of controversy. Gun manufacturers say they are politically motivated suits pushed by gun control advocates who want to further restrict America's access to guns."

"Debating a bill to give the gun industry broad immunity from civil lawsuits, the U.S. Senate on Thursday rejected a proposal that would have guaranteed families of victims of the 2002 Washington area snipers could pursue their cases in court."

"Earlier, in a rare victory for gun control advocates, the Senate voted 70-27 to require handguns to be sold with a trigger lock or similar child safety device."

-------
This device can later be "defined" by bureaucrats. Leave this amendment in and get a gun grabber in charge of the rule making over at the Consumer Product Safety Commission and BINGO, no more handguns.

"The girl, whose name was not available, was treated at Methodist Hospital for a shot to the shoulder area and released."

"State police are investigating the shooting, which happened this month in the home of Officer Tim Walker. Police said they believe the shooting was accidental."

"Walker's 15-year-old son, whose name was not released, said he was cleaning a rifle of his dad's, according to police. The weapon fired, striking the girl."

"Because Walker works for the Cloverdale PD, the department handed the investigation to the Indiana State Police."
