Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel appears to be in a hole and he may wish to stop digging as the revelations pile up about how his agency may have botched the response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland. Monday morning, at the far corner of the country, KVI morning host John Carlson unloaded on the sheriff, not only for the possible poor performance of his subordinates, but also for the way Israel tried to shift the blame to guns and the National Rifle Association during a CNN “Town Hall” appearance opposite NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch last week. |

An Idaho senate committee gave the green light Monday to a bill that would add extra protections for those who harm or kill someone in self-defense. Backers of the plan, like the National Rifle Association, law enforcement and prosecutor lobbying groups say Idaho has a rich legal history of supporting those who use deadly force while defending their homes or their families, but that they want it enshrined in state law. |

Colorado’s Capitol, like 28 other statehouses across the country, has security checkpoints at public entrances. There are metal detectors that visitors and lobbyists must pass through under the watchful eyes of State Patrol officers, who are there to protect everyone in the building and keep illegal guns and other weapons out. But for some, the security is too much. |

Just in time for the latest reinvigoration of the gun control debate, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have some unnerving news. According to a survey published in the American Journal of Public Health, 54 percent — more than half — of American gun owners do not store their guns safely. One might think this goes without saying, but it may be worth spelling out: While safe storage can reduce the increased risk for accidental deaths and firearm-related violence that comes with having a gun in the home, owners have to actually store their guns safely first. |

Akron City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution Monday that asks state lawmakers to ban assault weapons and other devices used in recent mass shootings. Councilwoman Tara Samples, who represents much of downtown and South Akron, first proposed the plan in a public safety committee meeting Monday afternoon. The resolution is not law, it asks the legislature to enact gun control that failed in the U.S. Senate in 2013. |

Shootings are still substantially higher than other recent years.

Why has support for gun rights become a hallmark of the Republican Party? There is nothing inevitable about the combination of economic and foreign policy conservatism with social conservatism. As late as the mid-1980s, conservative icons including Ronald Reagan supported gun control measures such as the Brady bill and a ban on assault weapons. Support for gun control legislation actually increased among Republicans in the 1980s. Unambiguous support for gun “rights” didn’t appear in the Republican Party platform until 1988. Even the National Rifle Association did not become fanatically opposed to any and all gun regulations until the late 1970s.

Far too often, we hear of another active shooter situation in America. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 70 percent of the incidents occurred in either a business or educational environment and 60 percent of the incidents ended before police arrived. Citizens have the potential to affect the outcome based up on their responses to the situation. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department will be offering active shooter, self defense ALICE training on Friday, March 2, at Fair Park Senior Center at 1 p.m. The ALICE Training Institute was formed to promote proactive strategies to improve the chances of survival during an active shooter event. |

The future is murky for a bill that seeks to loosen gun regulations in Ohio. The so-called Stand Your Ground bill was moving through the House but may have stalled with the recent rhetoric on gun control including from Gov. John Kasich. The Stand Your Ground bill, HB228, removes the requirement for a person to try and retreat before using lethal force in self-defense. It seemed to be poised to pass out of a House committee until its last hearing, the day before the mass high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) challenged President Trump on his controversial proposal to arm teachers with concealed-carry weapons, during a White House meetings with governors on Monday. Inslee said that both law enforcement and educators were concerned about teachers “packing heat” in classrooms. “So I just suggest we need a little less tweeting here, a little more listening,” said Inslee. “Let’s just take that off the table and move forward.” The president then called on Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) to explain how teachers are trained to carry guns in his state.

After four days of meetings with governors and group discussion with President Trump on Monday, Governor Charlie Baker said he “came away thinking that there was probably opportunity for action” at the federal level on guns. “There seemed to be fairly decent interest in expanding what’s in the NICS system and broadening the amount of information that is available through that,” he said referring to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
