A national movement aimed at protecting residents' gun rights has made its way to our area. A Penn Forest Township resident is on a one-man mission to convince leaders in Carbon County to designate every municipality as a Second Amendment sanctuary. Brandon Bell is a U.S. Marine Corp veteran and Second Amendment champion.

Since then, several more measures with this NRA-supported language have been filed: House Bill 3, by Rep. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), a comprehensive bill relating to the emergency powers of state and local officials specifically during a pandemic, and House Bill 1500, by Rep. Cole Hefner (R-Mount Pleasant), identical to House Bill 2249 but assigned a lower bill number so it can be referred to, and be eligible for, committee action sooner. We appreciate Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) and Rep. Burrows for ensuring that this critical language is included in one of the House priority bills, HB 3, and for granting HB 2249 a lower bill number, now HB 1500.

During the lengthy floor debate on the bill, Democrats said the bill would not infringe on those rights, because it only adds the Capitol to the list of places where open-carry of firearms is prohibited.

The bills sponsor, Sen. Patty Kuderer (D-Bellevue) said What you need when you come to the Capitol is your voice. What you dont need is a weapon.

Republicans, on the other hand, argued that it would take away legal gun owners ability to protect themselves if they feel unsafe at or near a public demonstration. You become the criminal because you know how to protect yourself, said Sen. Shelly Short (R-Addy). Some lawmakers also had concerns that the language in the bill was too vague.

The annual St. Joseph Gun & Knife Show will be held next month ahead of the spring hunting seasons. Kevin Hummer, event organizer, said the two-day event will return to the Civic Arena. He said the show plans for more than 250 tables of guns, ammunition and hunting supplies on the main floor with dealers from six states. The event will be on Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14.

Between midnight and 1 a.m. on 13 February 2021, two young home invaders came to the door of 402 S. Williams St. in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The address is to a modest apartment complex, home of Linda Ellis, a 73-year-old grandmother.

Ellis son, Randolf Bunn, answered the door. As he opened it the two suspects forced their way in. They forced Bunn to the ground. At least one of them had a gun. They barged into the kitchen, where they encountered 73-Year-Old Linda. They shot her in the leg.

Youre driving through downtown Philadelphia on a weekday night. It is about 9 pm when a car pulls up beside you at a stoplight. The man in the car points a gun at you and says to get out of your car.

You own a handgun. You have your Pennsylvania license to carry. Youre armed tonight. You pretend to move the seat belt as you draw your firearm. Your attacker is getting out of his car when you shoot him. He drops his gun so you drive away and call 911.

On Friday evening, 12 February, a group of about a dozen far-left protestors, allied with the DAs office in Kenosha, called for the removal of Judge Bruce Schroeder, because the Judge followed the rule of law and refused to facilitate the political persecution of Kyle Rittenhouse.

Rittenhouse is being tried for the self-defense shooting of three men who attacked him as he fled from mobs during the Kenosha riots. Judge Schroeder required the DA to follow the rule of law.

The search warrant was mostly based on the number of weapons possessed by the Davidians. But in the United States of America, we have the right to own as many weapons as we can afford. Whats more, the notion that the Davidians were stockpiling weapons is a red herring: They were selling weapons (legally) in addition to buying them, so inventory might be the more accurate term for what they had at Mt. Carmel.

Following in the footsteps of other counties in North Dakota, McKenzie County could be the latest to become an advocate for Second Amendment rights.

A resolution similar to those in Stark and Emmons Counties will be brought forth by a veteran to the McKenzie County Commission Tuesday, looking to protect what he calls the way of life for him and many others in rural areas.

After an emotional debate that highlighted and lamented America's sharp political divisions, the Washington Senate on Thursday voted to ban the open carry of firearms and other weapons, not just at the state Capitol campus, but at permitted demonstrations in public spaces across the state.

On Feb. 14, President Biden marked the third anniversary of the deadly shooting incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, with an announcement that he is calling on Congress to enact common sense gun law reforms.

As always, the details matter. The president defined common sense as a requirement for background checks on all gun sales, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and an end to immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives held a floor vote on self-defense legislation, House Bill 197. Thanks to your strong support, this bill passed and will advance to the Senate this session.

House Bill 197 is a common-sense measure that extends the justified physical force in defense of a person, when it is believed that another person is likely to use unlawful force against the individual in a vehicle, dwelling, or curtilage. This ensures that an individual maintains their right to defend themselves and their loved ones in the event of an unlawful attacker.

The House voted along mostly partisan lines Wednesday to send a controversial stand-your-ground bill to Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who has in the past expressed reservations about such legislation. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit yesterday vacated a 2020 decision that blocked California's ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. A federal judge in 2019 concluded that the law, which prohibits possession as well as manufacture and sale, was inconsistent with the Second Amendment. Last year a three-judge 9th Circuit panel agreed. Now the full court will rehear Duncan v. Becerra, raising the possibility that the ban will be upheld after all.

Amid the turmoil and bickering throughout the country, it is important to keep an eye on legislation being proposed both in your own state and in Washington D.C. One such bill on the federal level is H.R. 127, sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX). When we discussed financial de-platforming, we noted that for the firearms industry in fact, even for those who want to buy firearms access to financial services, including banking is a must. If access to those services are denied, say through a re-started Operation Choke Point, then the Second Amendment becomes a dead letter.

But now, Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) wants to require people to show proof of insurance to be able to buy a firearm. She introduced HR 1004 with one co-sponsor, Representative Andre Carson (D-IN). While text of this bill is not available as of this writing, Representative Maloney has introduced this bill in the 116th and 115th Congresses as the Firearm Risk Protection Act.

Oklahoma could become the next entry into the growing list of 2nd Amendment sanctuary states. Across the country more and more states are introducing legislation to uphold the 2nd Amendment and refuse any additional gun control measures from Federal, state, county and even local governments. This would mean that the state of Oklahoma wouldn't adhere to, or enforce, any new gun control measures such as bans, buy backs, capacity limits or other restrictions that may be introduced in the future.
