"The sound of gunfire is fading from American television. Actors are balking at violent programmes as networks bow to parental pressure to create zones of 'gun-free TV'."
"Kristin Davis, formerly Charlotte in Sex and the City, and Jeri Ryan, best known as the alien Seven of Nine in the Star Trek spin-off Voyager, have been credited with starting a trend when their agents asked for gunplay to be toned down in their latest dramas, due to be shown in Britain later this year."
"Last week, as America’s top networks began publicising their autumn schedules, Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment, said he found it liberating to make dramas where characters 'don’t have to be toting guns all the time'." ... |

There is a misconception relating to laws on privately owned machine guns. Private citizens can legally own them, but they can no longer be manufactured for sale to private citizens.
The ones that are legally still in circulation can be purchased or traded by private citizens who can pass the intense government checks for the purchase. This check is on both the weapon and the intended purchaser.
The only crime related to the misuse of a legally owned machine gun was a domestic shooting by a police officer with a department-issued weapon. This speaks highly of the police and private citizens who possess the weapons.

I must respond to Teresa C. of Joliet, 'I was offended by Ben Greer's statement that 'liberals don't use logic'.' [Debate over the gun control debate, February 18].
Teresa contradicts herself when she claims to be an intellectual and logical by neglecting the undeniable fact that guns save millions of lives every year. She also suggests that guns cause suicides and drive by shootings. I’m sorry Teresa, even 'smart technology' can’t make a gun drive a car nor provoke a criminal to use it in a crime.
She is openly against a person’s right to self defense and insists that America is lacking the safety and dignity she believes Ireland to posses. My question is why doesn't she move there?

On February 28, two anti-gun bills will be heard in the Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee. Sponsored by Representative Margaret Craven (D-Lewiston), LD 310 would mandate a 10-day waiting period for law-abiding citizens who purchase firearms in Maine. Sponsored by Senator Margaret Rotundo (D-16), LD 344 would amend the current preemption statute by allowing local governments to regulate the possession of firearms on public property. If LD 344 becomes law, this could create a "patchwork quilt" of firearm regulations throughout the state, making compliance impossible for law-abiding citizens.
