"The Brady Campaign is conducting this nationwide survey of our members to understand your priorities for the 110th Congress. Your participation will help us demonstrate that Americans like you demand that strengthening US gun laws be near the top of the congressional agenda. Thanks for your participation!" ...

"Since the expiration of the federal Assault Weapons Ban two years ago, there has been a significant rise in violent crime and homicides."

"* 2. How strongly do you agree with this statement: Passing an assault weapons ban must be one of the top domestic safety priorities of the 110th Congress." ...

"Force Science News recently reported on a landmark 5-year study of cop killers conducted by the FBI and detailed in a 180-page summary called 'Violent Encounters: A Study of Felonious Assaults on Our Nation’s Law Enforcement Officers.'"

"While the study focused specifically on criminals who have assaulted officers, the facts emerging from this study are a damning indictment of the entire gun control movement and proof of what gun rights activists have long known about violent criminals." ...

"... Zumbo dared to express an opinion that differs with the NRA's unbending stance that all guns are good, including military-style assault rifles." ...

"Zumbo is known throughout the hunting world as a great writer and expert on all things shooting."

"The right of Americans to bear arms ... will get a microscopic examination by presidential candidates in the coming months. I won't pretend gun owners are a homogeneous group - anything but - but we do share some characteristics and opinions that wannabe presidents should know about:"

"Responsible gun owners consider guns as tools. ... We use guns for hunting, target shooting and self-protection, not necessarily in that order."

"We apply for and receive concealed weapons permits, but it's not because we plan to carry a gun around. We want be able to legally transport guns in our vehicles ... A 15-year-old middle school student in Greenville County has been arrested after an elementary school student found a loaded gun left on a school bus.

Sheriff's deputies say the Skyland Elementary School student found the loaded .25 caliber pistol under a seat Friday afternoon as he returned with about 40 other students from a field trip.

Master Deputy Michael Hildebrand says the teen from Blue Ridge Middle School had taken the gun from his father's car on to the bus Thursday. Hildebrand says the teen was afraid his dad would find out, so he hid the gun under a seat on the school bus that afternoon.

The middle school student has been charged as a juvenile with possession of a weapon on school property.

"If you think that's a no-brainer, so did Congress when in 1994 they passed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which required domestic gun manufacturers to stop the production of assault weapons. This ban applied to 19 highly specific types of semi-automatic weapons and ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds. The ban did not apply to weapons for the military or for use by police units." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

House Democrats are expected to launch a battle today against a House bill they fear could make South Carolina a considerably more dangerous place to live by relaxing the state's concealed weapons law.

Under the bill, sponsored by Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester, South Carolina would drop its reciprocity clause. It currently allows only residents from states with which South Carolina has an agreement to carry concealed weapons here.

If passed, the measure would let anyone with a permit to carry a gun in another state carry one here with no further approval required.

Democrats say some states issue concealed weapons permits to 16-year-olds and do not require thorough background checks.

"A crime is committed with an assault rifle in Maryland at least every 48 hours, according to a report issued last fall by the group CeaseFire Maryland."

"A federal ban on assault weapons was approved in 1994 with the support of former presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald R. Ford and Richard M. Nixon, and others including former Sen. Barry Goldwater. This law was allowed to expire in September 2004."

"Gun manufacturers who sought to evade the law designed 'copycat' weapons like those used by the D.C. snipers to terrorize residents a little more than four years ago." ...

KABA Note: In other words gun manufacturers sought to comply with the law by removing the design features that made their guns 'assault weapons'. In Brady-speak 'evading' means 'comlying'.

"Gun owners looking to reload would have to show a permit every time they buy ammunition, if a bill backed by Durham officials gains state approval."

"The proposal championed by the Rev. Melvin Whitley, a local community activist, will face opposition from gun-rights groups."

"Whitley told state lawmakers and Durham City Council members Monday that anyone over 18 can buy ammunition without being subject to any background check. That means felons, who aren't allowed to own guns or ammo, can buy bullets unfettered."
