"The recent attacks on the Second Amendment by the anti-constitutional gun banners are predictable."

"Those who want to ban guns as a result of these despicable shootings are actually the cause of the problem."

"By blaming guns, they take the light away from what is really causing these episodes."

"It is a very easy argument to prove. Guns had been available virtually without restriction until the late 1960s."

"When I was a kid, I could walk into Sears, J.C. Penney or the True Value Hardware store and buy a gun."

"Over the course of many years, it has been my privilege to have been both the receiver and the dispenser of information related to firearms and ammunition. One of the often debated and discussed topics concerns that of effective small game ammunition. When I was in the eighth grade, a buddy of mine declared that his .22 rifle with .22 short ammunition was the most effective ammunition one could get hold of for squirrels. Being in my infancy in the firearms field, I took that as gospel and at face value as I dutifully purchased .22 short ammunition at the local Western Auto store for 59 cents a box ... For years after that, .22 shorts were my favorite load and I shot these as often as my Dad would allow me to 'squander' another 59 cents on a box. ..." ...

"Two major safety and security organizations -- the American Society of Safety Engineers and ASIS International -- joined the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in filing a 'friend of the court' brief urging the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals to affirm a 2007 federal district court ruling striking down Oklahoma's 2005 guns-at-work law as unconstitutional."

"In a suit filed by ConocoPhillips and others -- ConocoPhillips v. Henry -- the lower court held that the law, which made it a crime in Oklahoma for employers to bar guns from company property, impermissibly conflicted with the general duty under [OSHA] for all employers to provide workplaces free from recognized hazards. Brady, the ASSE and ASIS filed their brief yesterday afternoon." ...

"The Brady Law went into effect 14 years ago today, February 28, 1994."

"On anniversaries like this, it is important to remember what the Brady Law has accomplished, how effective the law has been at helping reduce gun crime, and how bitterly the NRA fought to kill it – including their effort to have the Brady Law struck down as unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court."

"Since 1994, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (the 'Brady Law') has stopped an estimated 1.4 million criminals and other 'prohibited purchasers' from buying guns from Federally licensed gun dealers. As the Bureau of Justice Statistics has shown, the rate of gun crime in America then plummeted for years. ..." ...

... "In the District of Columbia v. Heller case, the Supreme Court will confront the question of whether Washington's strict gun laws violate the right 'to keep and bear arms' protected by the Second Amendment. At issue in Heller are city ordinances that provide a near total ban on handguns ... and that criminalize the possession of functional rifles and shotguns — even in one's own home. While the outcome of Heller will no doubt affect the legal landscape of gun rights in this country, the Heller decision will also have broader ramifications. In fact, the direction that the Heller opinion takes will serve as a prime indicator of the overall health of our Constitution." ...

A GCO member has settled a long-standing case in federal court against the Carroll County Probate Court. The first-ever case challenging the request for SSNs from GFL applicants resulted in an earlier settlement with the Georgia Department of Public Safety and a permanent change in the GFL application form (SSNs are no longer requested on the form, even optionally). In the settlement with the probate judge, Judge Betty B. Cason agreed not to request SSNs at all, represented that she purged all SSNs from her GFL application records, and agreed to pay $52,500 in costs and attorney’s fees. A copy of the settlement agreement can be viewed here[.pdf].

"On the morning of Feb. 29 -- Leap Day -- in 2000, the sound of a single gunshot echoed through Buell Elementary School, touching off a media shock wave that would literally circle the globe."

"Kayla Rolland, 6, lay dying in a classroom. She had been shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a .32-caliber handgun to school."

"It touched off a media shock wave that would literally circle the globe."

"How could such a thing happen, the world asked." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: For those who don't remember, this 'could happen' because a 6-year-old boy was living in a crack-house run by his uncle while his mother worked 2 jobs.

"A Georgia Carry member recently received his renewal Georgia Firearms License after waiting almost 8 years since he applied. The member had been cited for something that, if still pending as an open case, could render him ineligible for a GFL. In this instance, however, the member never was prosecuted and the 'case' was 'dead docketed' by the municipal court before which the member was taken. ..."

"The probate court re-ran the member's background check and, 7 years and 9 months after the application for a renewal GFL was made, the GFL was issued."

"Congratulations to our most patient member!"

"Mark Tackett proposes that we rethink the alleged 'archaic' Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights following the recent college shooting. That proposal is, at once, naive and alarming. We could easily trace innumerable homicides in this nation to the First Amendment's right to free speech and assembly, or to the Fourth Amendment's right against unreasonable searches and seizures. For example, how many murders or drug-related deaths would have been prevented if the police had simply been allowed to search the suspect's home without that annoying warrant?"

"The Bill of Rights is not subject to manipulation or selective application based on the malicious actions of the few. ..."

"A South Carolina gun dealer who sued New York's mayor for saying that his shop engaged in 'criminal behavior,' has asked judges in two states to put his case on hold so he can fight an unrelated criminal charge."

"Licensed firearms dealer Larry Mickalis was indicted earlier this month on a charge that he illegally sold a rifle to an ex-convict two years ago at his pawn shop in Summerville, S.C."

"The charge was a surprise development in the embattled merchant's ongoing legal battle with New York City, and his attorneys have now asked courts to freeze the civil litigation until the criminal case is resolved." ...

"A new WCAX News poll* found Vermont voters favor enacting new state laws that would restrict the sale and ownership of guns."

"The one simple question they were asked was: Would you favor or oppose the state passing new legislation to restrict sale or ownership of guns?"

"Those in favor prevailed by a more than 3 to 2 margin-- 57 percent in favor, 35 percent opposed, 8 percent not sure."

"'I'm not surprised. We've seen a decline in participating in hunting over the years,' said Cindy Hill."

"Hill, a Middlebury lawyer and gun rights advocate, says the results reflect the cultural and societal changes in Vermont toward firearms." ...

"In a move that could be the most enduring imprint of U.S. influence in the Arab world, American military officials in Baghdad have begun a crash program to outfit the entire Iraqi army with M-16 rifles."

"The initiative marks a sharp break for a culture steeped in the traditions of the Soviet-era AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle, a symbol of revolutionary zeal and third-world simplicity that is ubiquitous among the militaries of the Middle East." ...

"Two masked and machete-wielding men who barged into a club in Sydney, Australia, couldn't have picked a worse night for their robbery -- a monthly meeting of bikers."

"The robbers chose the wrong night to burst into the club where the Southern Cross Cruiser Club have their monthly meeting."

"About 50 burly bikers fought back with tables and chairs -- pretty much anything that wasn't bolted down. One would-be robber was tied up; the other in the hospital."

"Police arrested both."

"'These guys were absolutely dumb as bricks,' Jerry Vancornewal, leader of the bikers, told CNN Thursday. 'I can't believe they saw all the bikes parked up front and they were so stupid that they walked past in.'" ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction. — St. George Tucker, in his edition of 'Blackstone's Commentaries,' 1:300 (1803).
