"There was Kang Lu, a Chinese-born U.S. Army second lieutenant and future military doctor, dressed in uniform, hoping, finally, for redemption in the form of a restored license to carry firearms..."

"And finally, sitting quietly on a bench outside the courtroom, was diminutive law paralegal and gospel choir singer Jacqueline Scott, a 53-year-old African-American woman and former domestic abuse victim, who said she has heard 'nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing' from the Brookline Police on her first-time application to carry a gun which she completed in October 2003."

"The expected election of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean as chairman of the Democratic National Committee this month will strike a crippling blow to the gun-control movement, lobbyists and political observers say."

"Like Dean, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is a strong supporter of gun rights. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) supports gun control but rarely mentioned the issue before the 2004 election."

"National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Director Chris Cox said Dean, whom the NRA endorsed when he was running for governor, was taking over a party that had suffered electorally for its embrace of gun control."

"Over the past decade, the issue had become strongly partisan, but gun-rights groups say the political winds have shifted."

"Schools don’t do enough to teach the Second Amendment. In many cases, they don’t do anything at all. That’s a problem the Second Amendment Foundation has been addressing for more than three decades, and it has been an uphill battle. In today’s politically correct classroom environment, it’s virtually taboo to talk about firearms, and showing an interest in guns can get your photo banned from the high school yearbook, as happened this year to a New Hampshire student who wanted to appear with his skeet gun and shooting vest in his official senior class portrait."

"The 27th annual SHOT Show attracted more than 37,000 attendees who gathered to take a look at the latest in firearms and outdoor apparel advancements. Smith & Wesson, one of the most recognized names in the industry, provided attendees with over 3,000 square feet of new products, services and accessories."

"As the store's alarm rang, thieves made off with 32 rifles and handguns from a Fremont gun shop early Wednesday, less than two weeks after police announced they will soon ignore burglar alarms unless there was a confirmed crime."

"Irvington Arms owner Martin MacDonald was livid over the break-in at his shop, where burglars used an aluminum baseball bat to break the front door and smashed display cases with a crowbar before making off with $20,000 in weapons."

"MacDonald blamed the break-in on the Police Department's policy -- announced last month but not effective until Feb. 18 -- that officers won't respond to burglar alarms unless they are told there is evidence of a break-in or security breach."

"A former Cambria County police officer is now on the wrong side of the law, charged with impersonating an officer and theft. Officials say Denise Sabo resigned from the Jackson Township police department in 2003 to take a higher-paying job as a security officer."

"At that time, they say she was asked to return her equipment, however, despite requests from the department chief, she never did."

"The chief says he realized Sabo not returning the equipment was more than just an oversight when he had a conversation with a Dale borough officer who said Sabo had been pulled over and had flashed her badge. The badge was just one of many items not returned, including uniforms and a gun. Together, the items total over $1500."

"Don't be fooled by the stereotype, said Aaron Thomas, a 30-year-old gay man with ruddy cheeks, an open manner and a 9mm semiautomatic handgun."

"Gay, gun-loving San Franciscans exist, he said shortly before hunching his back, steadying himself and firing at a target. Not only do they exist, they are steamed up about the proposed law -- supported by five San Francisco supervisors and set to go before voters next fall -- that would ban the ownership of handguns."

"A group fighting gun violence was at the Statehouse Wednesday to support a bill requiring criminal background checks at gun shows at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and all other state property."

" 'For the life of me, I don't see how any lawmakers could be opposed to this unless they are for providing criminals easy access to guns,' said John Johnson, director of Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence, based in Cedar Rapids."

"Two years ago, a bill ordering checks at all gun shows was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee but failed to get to the floor for a vote."

KABA Note: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, less than 2 percent of criminals get their guns at gun shows. If the gun show is a supermarket for criminals like these gun banners claim, wouldn't it make sense that more criminals would get their guns there?

"Fresh off its success at poking holes in a Wilmette handgun ban, the National Rifle Association has launched a new legislative drive to dismantle strong gun prohibitions in Chicago and test Gov. Rod Blagojevich's wavering commitment to broader gun control."

"Taking direct aim at Mayor Richard Daley's hard-line stance against the proliferation of guns, the NRA package of state legislation would allow residents of Chicago and other communities that ban handgun ownership to legally keep the weapons in their homes for self-defense purposes. It also would hold Chicago and other places with bans liable for injuries that residents claimed could have been avoided had they been allowed to carry handguns."

"The new aggressive approach by the powerful gun lobby will put pressure on Blagojevich to have more personal involvement in the gun-control debate as he prepares to deliver his annual State of the State message Thursday. Blagojevich aggressively pushed anti-gun measures while he was in Congress, but that caused him trouble with Downstate voters as a candidate for governor and he has largely sidestepped the issue since."

"Security in downtown public buildings, including the Capitol, the General Assembly Building, and City Hall, is poor, and the rule you discussed in the editorial, 'Good Rule,' to require those bringing concealed weapons to the Capitol to have a permit, doesn't go nearly far enough. You nailed the issue (without taking this position) when you postulated that 'killers are wired differently from law-abiding gun owners who seek concealed-carry permits.' "

"I'll say."

"People who bring guns into public buildings shouldn't have permits. They should have their heads examined. Members of city councils in San Francisco and New York have been murdered in their respective city halls."

Oklahoma City police arrested a high school student after finding he took a gun to school.

The Santa Fe South Charter High School student told officials he carried the gun because he feared for his life. The teenager's name and age were not released. He was arrested on a complaint of possessing a weapon on school property.

School Principal Chris Brewster says he and a campus resource officer found the weapon on the student after another student reported the boy had a gun.

Brewster says a friend of the boy was killed last month in a shooting in south Oklahoma City and the boy was scared.

Brewster says there was apparently no intent to harm anyone at the school.

"With all due respect, I find your reasons for voting against this common-sense measure lacking credibility:"

"Your response stated: 1) the legislation would set up a 'cumbersome process.' As you must be aware, there is already a process in place at gun shows so that FFL dealers (federally licensed firearms dealers) can quickly check the background of perspective gun buyers. Studies show that well over 90 percent of these background checks take place in less than 2 minutes. SB 807 would simply require that non-FFL gun sellers at gun shows use the existing quick and reliable process that the FFL dealers use to check backgrounds at gun shows. There is no 'cumbersome process' that needs to be established."
