John Lott: Research on Guns and Road Rage

"There are multiple concerns with this analysis. There is not attempt to differentiate whether the person who had the gun in the car had it legally or not. No attempt to determine whether they had a gun when the rage occurred. While one regression with a few very basic variables was apparently run (but not shown), no explanation was offered for why such a limited set of control variables were used (e.g., why not trouble with law enforcement, education, income, smoker, race). Trouble with law enforcement (past arrests) would have been obvious (though it would have been even better if they had asked whether the person had convictions for felonies (I wonder why they didn't include that question))." ...

"After a second telephone call, Hemenway said that while he will not give out the data used in the paper, he may reconsider providing a portion of the data, but that he can't make a decision before talking to his co-authors. He is also very busy and would not say when he would check into even this."

"Barely a week after the Mets traded pitcher Kris Benson to the Baltimore Orioles, his spitfire wife, Anna, is trading brickbats with the locals."

"Her latest adversary is gun-control advocate James Brady, who lives just outside Washington, a short drive from Baltimore. The 65-year-old Brady was paralyzed - and nearly killed - by John Hinckley's bullet during the 1981 assassination attempt on Brady's then-boss, President Ronald Reagan."

"'I am afraid of gun-control lobbyists,' the 29-year-old Benson writes on her Web site, annabenson.net, where she calls herself a 'pistol-packing mama,' reveals that weapons are placed "strategically" all over her house and urges everyone to obtain a firearm."

"Aaron Zelman: Let’s go through some of the abuses of power that you see and perhaps some ways to get our power back? As they say, power to the people."

"Jim Bovard: Okay, something that you and JPFO have done a lot of work on is the need for a Bill of Right cultures in this country. It is unfortunate that Americans are no longer aware of what the constitution says and what their rights are. Because of that, we are often very passive about what happens when the government violates those rights. ...The Bush Administration portends that the fourth amendment doesn’t say anything about probable cause or a warrant. Instead, as long as some government official thinks it is reasonable, then the government is entitled to invade your privacy. ...

"Kansas is one of only four states that offers no concealed-weapons permits. Advocates of concealed weapons say they hope election-year politics may change that."

"As they have for years, pro-gun lawmakers are pushing a bill that would set up a permit process for residents who want to carry a concealed firearm. Similar measures have passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate in recent years, but have always met with a gubernatorial veto."

"The bill by Sen. Phil Journey, R-Haysville, would allow concealed weapons permits for state residents over age 21 who pass a background check, complete a training course, and have never been convicted of a felony. ..."

"Police Chief Gerald H. Cliff advised Saginaw City Council members Monday against buying citizen's guns to thwart violence, saying buybacks didn't get the types of high-powered weapons used by gangs off the streets."

"Cliff's straightforward evaluation of gun buy-backs was right on target. Gun buy-back initiatives, in which officials purchase guns from citizens, ostensibly to keep them out of the hands of criminals, aren't effective. A handful of studies since the 1990s, when the federal government gave cities cash to buy guns, show they tend to lure law-abiding citizens to bring in small caliber guns. More importantly, Cliff said the studies indicate buying 'closet guns' doesn't have a measurable impact on reducing violence." ...

"Deputies in this Old West city are accused of drinking on duty, lying in court and trading police protection and drugs for sexual favors from women, according to an internal memo by the local marshal."

"The memo by the newly appointed marshal, Lance Crosthwait, describes an out-of-control department, with evidence lying out in the open and sex toys stashed in drawers. The marshal charged that at least one deputy knowingly used a broken breath-analysis unit for months, leading to the conviction of several people for driving while intoxicated, and that other deputies lied in official reports."

NJ: [Jersey City Police Chief] Troy should do his job (letter)

Believe it or not, when there was a shooting in the parking lot of a business establishment in Jersey City, Police Chief Troy placed a curfew on the establishment and made the owners close early!

Gee, if we close all the banks, nobody will rob them!

This is the same Chief Troy who went on television last year to back Lautenberg's ban on the "armor piercing gun."

-------
"Jersey City's crime rate is out of control. Over the past couple of years I have witnessed the police brass taking the easy way out. One clear example was when the shooting occurred up the block from the police station of Communipaw Avenue (mind you, up the block). The chicken establishment had a shooting in the parking lot and the police action was to place a curfew on the establishment and make them close early. It wasn't the establishment that ignited the incident but the lack of police presence."

"In this case, instead of punishing the establishment and its employees, Chief Troy should lose some of his salary or even his job so he could see how it feels to be unjustly punished...."

"U.S. Attorney Alice Martin said the suspects were accused of running businesses that sold weapons without the proper license. Hobbyists can legally sell guns without a license, she said, but the 11 were making sales too frequently to be legal."

"'These people who are operating every Saturday and Sunday and are selling hundreds of guns have gone beyond hobby,' said Martin, who announced the arrests at a news conference in Huntsville."

-------
Seems it's now up to the "authorities" to decide who is selling "too much" to be legal. It seems pretty subjective.

"Questions on reinstatement of privileges for a private gun club at the sheriff’s gun range, located off SR 80 in Pioneer Plantation, remain unanswered. At the Jan. 24 county commission meeting, President of the Caloosa Sports Shooters Association Ed Kuntz said the original plan was for a dual law enforcement-public shooting facility and that the arrangement worked well for four years. However, questions about insurance and who had keys to the premises prompted Sheriff Ronnie Lee to close the shotgun and pistol/rifle range to the public. The skeet and trap range remains open to the public."
