Roy Huntington describes the inherent, primal wonder of a firearm as its ability to “smite from a distance.” This sense of awe only increases with the distance from which the smitation is issued, which explains much of the incredible popularity currently enjoyed by precision shooting. Unfortunately, not only is it incredibly cool, precision shooting is generally expensive — but not always.

Guns Are Not Just a Public Health Problem

Public health is the lingua franca through which liberal America understands guns, and the traumas they engender.

When President Biden called for action after last October’s mass shooting in Maine, he did so by once again casting gun violence as an “epidemic”—a Hippocratic term taken from the study of the spread of infectious diseases.

The notion that guns cause a public health crisis best addressed through harm reduction strategies like background checks, red flag laws, or safe storage guidelines courses through the language of experts, doctors, activists, and media commentators.

When Antonio Walker was arrested in late January, accused of shooting someone in the neck, it wasn't his first run-in with Baton Rouge police.

He had twice been charged with aggravated battery, first in 2015, then in 2017, and had faced numerous drug and traffic counts.

“In 2019 he was medically transported for being emotionally disturbed. In 2020, his mom calls the police because he’s off his meds. Again he’s transported. In 2022, mom calls the police again because he’s off his meds and acting irregular. Here you go again," East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said. "This is a guy who just shouldn’t have a weapon."

Grace Callahan calls them “Frankenstocks,” and she doesn’t miss them one bit. A hunter, top-level shooting instructor, and eight-time member of the National Sporting Clays Association All-American ladies team, Callahan grew up shouldering shotguns with bulky stocks made with pieces and parts that adjusted to individual shooters. “I started shooting competitively when I was fifteen,” says Callahan, who is now twenty-nine, “and all that honking big hardware added a lot of weight. And those guns were ugly, too.”

Hello fellow political junkies!

We are into the third quarter with Sine Die coming in nine days.

The 30-day session, which is sometimes referred to as a “budget session” since any topic not about budgetary matters has to get approval from the governor to be discussed, has so far been characterized by firearms-related bills that are part of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s public safety agenda.

The debates on these bills range from thoughtful questioning to the nonsensical: from legality questions to gross misinterpretations of what the bill actually states or aims to do.

The Senate bill seeks to rein in untraceable ghost guns, bans carrying firearms in government administrative buildings, gives firearm licensing authorities access to some of an applicant's mental health hospitalization history, and expands the list of people who can petition the court to take away someone's guns if they are deemed dangerous. It passed the Senate on a 37-3 vote shortly after 8 p.m.

But it would be highly encouraged by an amendment that paved the way for passage.

A carrot-and-stick approach offered by Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey makes the eight-hour training class needed for a CWP free. The State Law Enforcement Division must provide the course at least twice a month in every county — more often if the demand is greater — in hopes of also making it more convenient. And it lowered the age eligibility for a CWP to 18, down from 21.

If gun owners without a CWP commit a crime involving a gun, they’d face a stiffer penalty than someone with a permit. A conviction would bring up to three additional years in prison.
