An association of the world's leading firearm companies and international shooting sports groups is close to being officially recognized by the United Nations as a Non Government Organization (NGO), a status that will allow the gun group to become more actively involved, and be more effective, in countering global gun control efforts. |

In talks with the U.S. government about using its rapid-fire Phalanx Block 1B gun systems to protect domestic infrastructure sites, could provide a demonstration model within a week's time, a top company official said.
Dennis Carroll, project manager for the Phalanx system used on Navy warships since 1979, told Reuters in an interview late Monday that he had not yet received any orders to install the gun system at land-based sites in the United States. |

House committee votes to remove fee for weapons permits. Over objections of committee Democrats, Republicans agreed to remove the current $35 fee charged law-abiding citizens who take out a concealed weapons permit.
Rep. Morgan Philpot (R-Sandy) already has a bill waiting for House debate that removes the fee charged gun-buyers for a background check. |

GOA ALERTS: H.B.304, a bill that would eliminate almost all of the 'No Safety Zones' from the state's concealed carry law, now advances to the House Rules Committee.
The bad news is the Rules Committee is a notorious "killing field" and is the logical spot for anti-gunners to kill the bill for the year. Only massive pressure from the grassroots on the members of the Rules Committee can advance the bill to the full House at this point.

SHAWNEE -- Now that police officers are trained in how to use a Taser, offenders may find committing a crime in Shawnee results in a real shock to their systems.
The Taser policy requires two officers to be present when the device is in use. One officer will hold the Taser while another officer, armed with a gun, will cover him. |

SANTA FE — Santa Fe city police officers will be patrolling Santa Fe Independent School District campuses while Superintendent John Whittemore investigates what he calls “personnel issues” in the school district’s police department.
Whittemore said the department’s three officers and police chief Jeff Chernosky are still employed and the exact nature of the issues is still not clear.
The school district only recently restarted its police department after several years of inactivity. |

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says Americans are frittering away freedom in the name of feeling more secure.
"Parts of our open society are gradually being closed down because of our fear of terrorism," Mrs. Norton said yesterday during a morning meeting with editors and reporters at The Washington Times.

Last week, alert security screeners at the Phoenix airport intercepted a man attempting to carry what they concluded were dangerous metal objects onto a Washington-bound flight. Among the metal objects in his possession were a metallic star, a nail file and another object that appeared to be a bullet. No gun was found. After about 45 minutes of questioning and repeated searches, the man was allowed to board the aircraft, minus the bullet and nail file. |

-- I hope this felon appreciated the fact that he was breaking the law by just possessing the firearm, before he tried to shoot it out with the cops, which, coincidentally, is also illegal.

Like many states, Virginia has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars since Sept. 11 putting metal detectors and X-ray machines at its Capitol doors to thwart a deadly terrorist rampage.
Visitors now entering the 200-year-old Capitol are asked to let officers inspect anything that might trigger a metal detector — cell phones, pagers, keys and guns.
Yes, guns.

The Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill last session by a vote of 85-46 that would allow Minnesota residents to carry concealed handguns in public. The measure was given praise by Gov. Jesse Ventura. Rep. Pat Pariseau (R-Farmington) is carrying the bill in the state Senate. |

"Retaliation for stolen drugs fueled the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old woman Jan. 23 in Kansas City, Kan., according to police.
Twice in the week before the shooting, less than $1,000 worth of crack cocaine was stolen, prompting two shootings -- including the woman's slaying -- by different groups, police said."

A federal judge threw out a ban on baby pacifiers, glow sticks and dust masks at "rave" parties held at a theater saying the restrictions violated partygoers' 1st Amendment rights. In a ruling Friday, [judge] Porteous said, "The government cannot keep legal items out of places because of illegal activities they associate with them."
