Few things raise the hair on the back of your neck, and make you jump up and down, like a rat crawling up your pants leg. That’s what happened to my brother one summer when we were visiting the family farm in Vernon, Texas. We were about 17 and 12 (I’m the younger one) and had been exploring the barn. We found a nest behind some hay bales; I can still hear J.R.’s instructions: “I’ll hit ’em with this stick, and if they run shoot them with the shotgun.”

Weldon said two men began harassing her and, when he tried to intervene, one retrieved a gun from his car.

A bill requiring background checks on all firearm sales passed the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee by a vote of 3 to 1. House Bill 50 would close a dangerous loophole that allows guns to be sold online or at gun shows or even in parking lots without criminal background checks. It has exceptions written in to allow family members to transfer guns to their relatives and for the loaning of guns for hunting, shooting ranges or self-defense.

“Dozens of college students, professors and activists warned Thursday that failing to stop concealed weapons on campus will lead to more shootings and volatile situations…” So began the lead article on the front page of the January 27, 2017 edition of The Topeka Capital-Journal. While perhaps not qualifying precisely as false news, it comes pretty close.

After a hearing that lasted more than three hours, the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee voted 3-1 along party lines in favor of House Bill 50, sponsored by Rep. The correct interpretation of the Second Amendment of the Constitution requires an understanding of its historical context. In their revolt against England, American colonists learned about the danger being located in one place. Hence they drafted a constitution which divided power among three branches of government. They further dispersed power by granting individuals specific rights and unspecified power to the states with the passage of 10 amendments. |

Adding additional man- and woman-power to our Army at this time would be a huge mistake. ... The Army is capable of producing warrior-soldiers, but does so only in its special operations units -- units that are overtaxed. ... Army special operators shoot thousands and thousands of rounds with their assigned weapons each year, at a minimum. Some shoot that amount in a quarter. Regular Army soldiers are lucky to shoot a couple hundred rounds a year. Some shoot much less than that, often with only one visit to the range. How can any soldier become a warrior-soldier shooting twice a year using less than 200 rounds?
