Gun-carrying Hoosiers could soon be pocketing the $125 fee they typically pay for lifetime handgun carry permits. The Indiana House voted 70-20 on a bill to remove the fee for a lifetime carry permit, and increase the four-year handgun carry permit to five years. Those who pay the fee for the five-year permit would be exempt from future background checks when purchasing a firearm over those next five years, which is why some Hoosiers still might opt for the shorter permit despite its cost.

Just because you leave your home doesn't mean that your Constitutional rights go out the door, too. That's what New Jersey's oldest gun rights advocacy group argued on Monday as its members announced a new federal lawsuit to overturn New Jersey's firearm carry law on the ground that it violates the Second Amendment.

Expect the animosity to grow in Florida’s four-way Republican primary for attorney general. Rancor between candidates was on full display Saturday during a forum held by The Federalist Society, one of nation’s most influential organizations involving conservative and libertarian legal minds, at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort.

In the immediate aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, there was a fevered pitch to ban bump stocks, the device that allowed the shooter's semi-automatic rifles to mimic the rapid fire of machine guns. With that push stalled at the federal level, a handful of states and some cities are moving ahead with bans of their own.

Two weeks ago, in my home state of Kentucky, two students were killed and 18 wounded in a school shooting at Marshall County High School. It was the nation’s 11th school shooting of 2018. 11 school shootings in 23 days. That’s one school shooting every other day in this country. And no one cares. No one cared last year about the Las Vegas shooting, and no one is caring now. If you heard about and remember this shooting in Kentucky, good, but I bet you can’t name the other ten that happened this year before it.

Out in the middle of the country, we went in search of the middle ground of the Great American Gun Debate. We met 29-year-old Haley Smith, of Paola, Kansas. About a year ago, a stranger knocked on Smith’s door at 2 in the morning. It took her breath away. In that moment, the 20-something single mom said she thought, Is someone breaking into my house? How was she going to protect herself? How would she protect her then-6-year-old daughter?

In 2008, the United States Supreme Court held, in District of Columbia v. Heller, that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. This past weekend, I went to a symposium at Campbell Law School in Raleigh, N.C., where a bunch of people — including Alan Gura, the attorney who argued the winning side — talked about where we are in 2018.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) suggests Russians promoted the Second Amendment during the 2016 presidential election in the hope that more Americans would kill each other. He made the observation during a speech at the University of Pennsylvania. The Media Research Center reports that Schiff claimed that Russians took to social media during the presidential campaign in order to divide America and cause one demographic of Americans to oppose another. He said Russia pushed “content designed to pit us against each other, to exploit our divisions.”

More Ohioans than ever are buying guns for protection. Sherry Washington of Centerville decided to buy one and signed up to take a C-C-W class to learn how to use it. "Times are changing and it's a comfort," said Washington. For other Miami Valley residents, it's all about invoking their Second Amendment rights to own a firearm.

One of the remarkable aspects of the Fall 2017 tax debate was Republicans' willingness to say with straight faces that "tax cuts pay for themselves." It is true that some Republicans vacillated between saying that their tax cuts would completely pay for themselves (sometimes even claiming that cuts would more than pay for themselves) and saying that the offset would only be partial, but even the latter claim is also almost entirely wishful thinking (although it at least it concedes something to reality).

The sound of geese honking echoes across the water, while the sun barely turns the sky pink and hunters are still tossing decoys. They fly overhead looking for the next spot to land. The blind grows quiet as the geese come closer. With hands on their guns waiting for the call, they sit, ready to jump up and drop them from the skies. This is what waterfowl hunters live for. If you’re in the market for a new waterfowl gun, check out these four new options from the 2018 SHOT Show.

A bipartisan group of Tennessee senators today unveiled gun-safety legislation Monday that sponsors hope will encourage firearm owners to buy gun safes by exempting the sales from state sales taxes. Sen. Kerry Roberts, R-Springfield, and Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris, D-Memphis, say they're hopeful the legislation will curb accidental shootings by children who gain access to family weapons.

In his capacity as a lawyer, Rep. Cord Byrd (R-Neptune Beach) handled a case in 2016 in which his client could not get his gun back without a court order. He says it all started when a father and son got into an argument over a telephone call. “The son—being vindictive—called law enforcement, and said, ‘my father threatened to commit suicide,’” said Byrd. “Law enforcement went out to the home, talked to the father, no one was using drugs, no threats had been made, [and] there was no alcohol. They said, ‘hey, do you have any firearms in the home? Let’s just make sure everything’s calmed down.’ He said, ‘ yes,’ and turned over the firearms. A few days pass, he goes to get them back, and then they said, ‘we need a court order.’

News two weeks ago that legendary high class gunmaker Weatherby is pulling out of California just took on more importance in the wake of a weekend Washington Post article that put it bluntly: “For those who think California politics is on the far-left fringe of the national spectrum, stand by.”

The Golden State – long considered hostile to gun owners, the firearms industry and the Second Amendment – is beginning to look like Fool’s Gold. To read the WaPo story might lead one to conclude the state is going to the dogs, but some might consider that an insult to canines.

I recall a conversation with an editor at the 2017 SHOT Show about the various new “X-series” pistols SIG Sauer had just launched at the show: The X-Five, X-VTAC and X-Carry. Of the three, I told him, the one I was most excited about was the X-Five. “The X-Five?” he asked, “Isn’t that the gamer one?”

The Georgia Supreme Court recently reversed the murder conviction of an Athens man who fatally shot another man at a Super Bowl party four years ago, according to an opinion released by the court on Monday. Marvin Lewis Brown Jr., then 29, fatally shot 24-year-old Javious Cordez Tucker on Feb. 2, 2014, during an argument that started over Brown’s refusal to share a bag of pork skins with the victim, Athens-Clarke County police said.

As big shots go, NSSF’s SHOT Show has ruled our industry roost for 40 years, and the 2018 event did not disappoint. SHOT Show spans more than 650,000 square feet of floor space; 12 grueling miles of aisles; 1,600 vendors; 2,500 of us media types and, while the data isn’t out yet, I suspect attendance was well over 65,000. While no better place on Earth exists from which to read the industry’s pulse, gathering intel to share with inquiring minds can be downright brutal—not because it’s hard to find, rather, there’s simply too much to cover.

In 2005, Florida’s Stand Your Ground law was created to give average community members a way to protect themselves if they thought their lives were in danger, shielding them from legal repercussions. In 2012, it was used as a dubious defense by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin. A year earlier, Zimmerman had called in to report a “suspicious person” in the Sanford neighborhood and then disregarded orders to remain in his vehicle — not exactly the self-protection envisioned when Stand Your Ground was enacted.

Small, easily-concealed weapons were moving quickly at the Florida gun show in North Fort Myers. According to one those helping run the event, the tiny guns, which can be easily hidden, are readily available and quickly sold. "Most of the time, the majority of the people are looking for something to conceal carry", said Mike Wilcox who works for Shoot Straight.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There is no doubt in my mind that millions of lives could have been saved if the people had not been "brainwashed" about gun ownership and they had been well armed. Hitler's thugs and goons were not very brave when confronted by a gun. Gun haters always want to forget the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which is a perfect example of how a ragtag, half starved group of Jews took up 10 handguns and made asses out of the Nazi's. — Theodore Haas, former prisoner of the infamous Dachau prisoner concentration camp
