"As momentum builds for a statewide assault weapons ban to replace a federal one that is expiring, all eyes are on Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., who voted against the federal law while in Congress."
"Ehrlich said yesterday that he hasn't taken a position on legislation introduced in the Senate by Montgomery County Sen. Robert J. Garagiola and being prepared in the House by Del. Neil F. Quinter, that would expand the state's 1994 ban on assault pistols to include assault rifles and weapons that share their characteristics. The bills have attracted 69 co-sponsors." ... -------
That's odd. A couple of days ago, we saw this in the Washington Post: "[Ehrlich's] communications director ...Paul E. Schurick, said the Republican administration could never support the measure."
Wasn't Mr. Ehrlich strongly supported by the NRA? Surely they wouldn't pump so much money and effort into someone who'd support a gun ban... right? |

"In a slap at Wilmette village officials, Cook County prosecutors today announced they would not pursue charges against a homeowner, who shot and wounded an alleged home intruder, for letting his state firearms registration lapse."
" 'We choose to prosecute the real criminal here, the person who broke into this house not once, but twice,' said Assistant State's Atty. Steve Goebel, supervising prosecutor in the Skokie courthouse."
"Wilmette resident Hale DeMar had been charged with failing to renew his state Firearms Owner's Identification Card when it expired in 1988. Had DeMar been found guilty of the misdemeanor, he could have been fined up to $2,500 or sentenced to a year in jail."
" 'He purchased a gun legally. It was registered. What he failed to do was keep current (his FOI card), and we chose not to prosecute this memory lapse,' Goebel said." ... -------
This surrender on the part of government is about a large public outcry and about the absurdity of their gun ban being put on wide display. |

"Cook County prosecutors on Friday dropped a charge of failing to renew his Firearm Owners Identification card against Hale DeMar of Wilmette, but the Village of Wilmette is going forward with its prosecution of DeMar for violating a local handgun ban."
"DeMar's predicament has received national attention. . . . Police arrived at the house thirteen minutes after the burglar alarm first sounded, after DeMar called 911 and after the shooting was over."
"[C]ounty prosecutors said they did not want to 'revictimize' DeMar and so dropped the FOID charge."
"Wilmette, though, has decided to proceed with its prosecution of DeMar for violating the village handgun ban, even though the suspect has a lengthy criminal record." ... -------
SUGGESTION:
If you'd like to say something to the police of Wilmette, Illinois -- especially to the moronic police chief who publicly supports this gun ban and chastises the self-defending homeowner -- you can do so right here: police@wilmette.com. While some people might suggest to you that you be nice, kind and respectful, we urge you to speak your mind directly, without mincing words. Being respectful to blatant tyrants who stand by their thuggish policies is an utter waste of time. The police chief of Wilmette, Illinois is a self-righteous jerk -- and that's putting it very nicely. Just don't say anything that you wouldn't say to a judge. |

"Senate Republicans are at odds with Gov. George Pataki over guns and fees. The governor wants pistol owners to renew their licenses every five years and pay a $100 fee — or more if they own multiple guns. Now, unless they’re revoked for criminal activity, licenses are good for life. The fee would generate an estimated $31 million a year in revenue, with most of the money going into the state general fund. Many Republican lawmakers are up in arms over the fee and what they see as one more infringement of Second Amendment rights." ...

"The bumper stickers the NRA sent out had two words in bold letters: PATAKI and FREEDOM. You saw them on the back of pick-up trucks everywhere. Who’d have thought, those years ago, that George Pataki would turn out to be the most anti-gun governor in New York’s history. Who’d have imagined he would so quickly and so effectively stab his most loyal supporters in the back." ... -------

Quite a few people, actually. Lots of people supported a better candidate, but the GOP is famous for locking step with scum like this gun prohibitionist Pataki character. And so is the NRA. NRA's history of supporting candidates who sell out gun owners is long-standing and well-documented. |

"Republicans in the state Senate are at odds with Gov. George Pataki over guns and fees. The governor wants pistol owners, who now hold permanent pistol licenses, to renew their licenses every five years and pay a $100 fee per gun – more if they own multiple guns." ... -------
KABA RESPONSE:
This was predicted a long time ago -- long before election day -- but many gun owners are gullible, and some of them just don't listen very well. Worse yet, others don't even care. Even more amazing, there'll be gun owners who will support Pataki's continuation in "public service" even if he succeeds in screwing them with this new Plan.
The gun rights community is divided. The sooner we come to terms with that fact and accentuate the divisions, the sooner people can choose which side to fight on: shooters/hunters/sportsmen, or Patriots. If a shooter/hunter/sportsman doesn't care about gun prohibitions, so long as his own guns aren't touched by the attack, he's no friend of freedom and should be publicly ridiculed -- no matter who he is, what his position or how right he wrongly thinks himself. Many shooters/hunters/sportsmen are literally so self-absorbed and ignorant they think their shotguns will always be safe from legislative attacks. As P.T. Barnum said, "There's one born every minute." |

"Joe Soucheray, like the legislators who authored the law, implies that conceal and carry laws cause no problems. The truth is that incidents happen all the time. Leonard Eads, the second-highest ranking officer in the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, is accused of brandishing the weapon at his workplace. It is unclear whether Eads was simply showing off the weapon, or if he used it to intimidate, Hubbard reported.
Eads (pictured, left) was placed on administrative leave several weeks before the incident because of complaints from coworkers, Hubbard reported. No details were given about the complaints.
The charge Eads faces is a class C felony that carries a possible five-year prison sentence.

Metal detectors were on the two main entrances. The school boasts 20 guards. Granted, they are unarmed -- but that's quite a security force for a school.
And still a handgun was smuggled in and used to commit murder.
So what does D.C. mayor Anthony Williams want to do? "In his State of the District Address on Thursday, Mayor Anthony A. Williams said he has directed Metropolitan Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey to devise within 10 days a Ballou security plan 'to ensure that students never again lose a classmate to violence.' "
So are they going to add more guards? Add metal detectors to the other 118 entrances to the school? Search every student and place security checkpoints at all entrances to the parking lot?
If so, that would make the school a lot like a prison -- and we saw a prisoner obtain a firearm to affect an escape just this past week. |

"A Sequoyah County jury convicted a man accused of killing an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper of manslaughter and assault with a weapon."
"After nearly nine hours deliberations, the jury found Kenneth Eugene Barrett, 42, guilty of the lesser charges."
In the first trial, one of the jurors wanted to acquit, saying that Mr. Barrett acted in self-defense.
"Prosecutors alleged Barrett opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle on the OHP tactical team as it approached his home, giving officers no chance to serve a legal 'no-knock' warrant to search for methamphetamine."
It was 12:30am when this happened. The defense argued self-defense. The prosecution sought the death penalty. |

Considering the very strict regulation of firearms in Jamaica, this news article is rather curious. -------
"The words at the head of this article come from John Lennon, the most famous of the pop group known as the Beatles, and many Jamaicans seem to have taken the message to heart. For how else can you explain the proliferation of guns in the society and the casual way in which they are used - almost in the manner of a dinner-table implement. Almost without fail, the radio newscasts and newspaper front pages serve up a daily diet of shootings, some in a quite brutal fashion."
