For many of us, including myself, and including a lot of non-gunowners I might add, it is a matter of self respect, a community contribution, a solemnity that is not based on fear of punishment, but of personal values."

"In this value, the law-abiding pay the price in tolerating a great deal of abuse and mistake, a great deal of intentional mischaracterization and of being ignored in not only gun ownership, but in family law and so much more. Many officials fail to understand how the law-abiding keep the populace at peace more than the officials who write the laws." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Virginians would be allowed to use deadly force against a threatening intruder under a bill that passed the House today on a 91-to-6 vote.
The measure would write into the Virginia code the common law theory of self-defense.

It allows a person to use any degree of physical force -- including deadly force -- and be immune from liability for the injuries or death of the intruder.

Delegate William Janis of Richmond used the gruesome murders of a popular Richmond family as an example when explaining the bill to his colleagues a day earlier.

The Harvey family was bound, beaten and their throats cut.

Janis asked what would have happened if they had fought back against the intruders.

He says maybe everyone in the family would have survived.
