Any shooter who uses a firearm for serious purpose, either hunting or self-defense, needs to become intimately familiar with the operation of the weapon. The stress of a gunfight could hamper your effectiveness unless you train yourself to fire quick follow-up shots and clear any malfunctions you encounter.
Fortunately, any physical skill can be pre-programmed onto your “hard drive” with enough proper practice. |

I recently met with Jody Weis, Deputy Director of the Chicago Crime Commission. Our discussion centered on reducing illegal guns in their respective states of New York and Illinois. As the sponsor of a microstamping bill in the New York State Assembly, I met with Mr. Weis after learning of his interest in microstamping technology from a national news show where he spoke about his plan to push for microstamping legislation in Illinois.

Google declined to comment for this piece but referred me to its policies posted online, and the weapons policy appears to stem from this branding principle: Google "doesn't allow the promotion of ... violent concepts" including "the promotion of self-harm and violence against people or animals."
Yes, killing animals is an inherently violent act. Of course, it's perpetrated thousands of times every day in the name of feeding an omnivorous nation. But perhaps Google is a vegetarian company?
Nope, that's clearly not the case, because the policy also states that promotion of products related to "self-defense, hunting and sporting events" is allowed. |

What makes this so remarkable is that the gun lobby blocks both the public and media from gaining access to actual data on gun sales. Instead of sales data, the NRA and NSSF offer reporters data on background checks conducted through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). For a multitude of reasons that I chronicled in my earlier blog, this data does not represent gun sales. As the FBI made clear to Reuters on Saturday, "An increase in the number of NICS transactions, for a given time period, should not be used to indicate an increase in the number of firearms sold." |

A woman has won $975,000 in a federal jury trial, 14 years after giving birth in a jail cell in Washington state.
A jury agreed Friday on nine of 10 counts in Imka Pope's civil rights case against King County. Pope says jail nurses and corrections officers violated her civil rights in 1997 by dismissing her claims that she was pregnant.
She had been arrested for sleeping on a bench at a Metro bus stop. In the lawsuit she filed in 2007, Pope said jail health officials locked her in a cell and ignored her for six days. She got help after a guard heard a baby crying.
Her mental illness has delayed the case. It went to trial once previously, but at that time Pope was involuntarily committed to Harborview Medical Center. |

A depressed Army reservist who made a phone call for help says dozens of police responded by surrounding his home and arresting him, vandalizing and searching his place without a warrant, seizing his dog and killing his tropical fish. Matthew Corrigan, who lives alone with his dog, sued the District of Columbia in D.C. Federal Court. Confronted with a massive police presence after his plea for help, Corrigan says, he denied officers permission to enter his house, but they entered and trashed it anyway, saying, "I don't have time to play this constitutional bulls**t!" |

Citizens looking for more personal protection can rest easy after two bills that would allow the use of deadly force in one’s home moved forward this week in the General Assembly.
Staunton Delegate Robert “Dickie” Bell’s House Bill 48, better known as the “Castle Doctrine,” won an endorsement Friday from the House Courts of Justice Committee. The vote was 12-6. The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
The Castle Doctrine, which is law in 31 states, states that people can use physical or deadly force against intruders in their home if they believe the intruder could hurt them or if an intruder commits an overt act against them.

Senate Bill 58 was introduced by Senator Green early last year and co-sponsored by Senators Kowall, Brandenburg, Colbeck, Casperson, Emmons, Jansen, Moolenaar and Robertson.
It is currently sitting with the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would eliminate the so-called “Pistol Free Zones” for CPL (Concealed Pistol License) holders.

Police are investigating a shooting that happened at The Greens in Fayetteville early Sunday morning.
They say one person is dead after allegedly breaking into an apartment.
Fayetteville police say that a man crawled through a window at the Green Apartments, and was confronted by the homeowner who was armed with a handgun.
The homeowner asked him to leave and he did, but a few minutes later the intruder went back through the same window and the homeowner shot him. |

The Mormon Church owns one of the most active and unregulated gun sale portals on the web, according to a national investigation released by the New York City Mayor's office.
The website in question is KSL.com, the online hub for Utah's NBC affiliate and sister radio station, which are both owned and operated by the for-profit arm of the Mormon Church. In addition to local news, KSL.com produces a popular classifieds section that reaches millions of users well beyond Utah. ...
“One would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren't fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce,” a source involved in the report says.

Legislation (HB940, SB323) that would overturn Virginia’s One Gun A Month law has already passed the Virginia House of Delegates and is slated to be voted on in the State Senate as early as today. Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has said he will sign it into law should it pass. Despite the fact that Virginia is largely considered to be a pro-gun state, legislators have for years rationed the Second Amendment rights of its citizens with a law that limits handgun purchases to one a month — in effect, treating a constitutionally protected right as nothing more than a privilege. Limiting the sale of firearms to law-abiding Virginians is premised on the false belief that doing so reduces illegal firearms trafficking. |

Therefore, as a Rabbi, an Orthodox Jew, and an American, I stand with the Catholic Church and its right to freedom of conscience. If President Obama can force Catholics to pay for abortions, then no religious belief is safe in America, and an America in which religious beliefs are not sacrosanct is an America that is unsafe not only for Jews but for all people of conscience — whether people of faith or secularists.
While JPFO’s main focus is on the Second Amendment, we have always stood for all of the Bill of Rights for All of the People. While Second Amendment is the “Guardian” of the Bill of Rights, all of the rights reserved for We the People must stand intact for any of them to have meaning. |

Arizona is one step closer to having guns on its university and community-college campuses.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday passed Senate Bill 1474, which requires public universities and community colleges to allow anyone age 21 or older with a concealed-carry permit to carry a gun on campus. The schools can keep the guns out of buildings, stadiums and classrooms if they provide secure gun lockers.
The committee also passed a bill that would loosen restrictions on carrying guns in public buildings, including city halls, libraries or municipal swimming pools. |

A gun-rights group has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court after a federal judge in Illinois ruled against allowing people to carry firearms on the street.
The Second Amendment Foundation announced Monday it's appealing the decision by federal district Judge Sue Myerscough.
Currently only Illinois and the District of Columbia prohibit the concealed carrying of weapons. Gun owners say that infringes on their 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. |

When the right-wing Second Amendment Foundation teamed up with the left-wing First Amendment foundation to sue the Eastern Washington library system for filtering out gun websites, it serves as a case study as to why the Seattle Public Library was right last week when it said it wasn't going to do anything about Internet porn.

The one place you don't want to fire a weapon is at a gun show -- you'll have hundreds of people reaching for their own weapons in response. Well, that's just what one highly intelligent Georgia man did. The Savannah Morning News reports that a 26-year-old fellow named Charles Lake was just leaving the Savannah Civic Center on Sunday when his gun accidentally went off in the parking lot. It seems he was reloading the weapon at the time. He suffered a bullet wound to the leg. Perhaps he was not very familiar with the weapon -- Lake bought this particular gun at the show on Saturday, and returned Sunday to stock up on more pistols. |

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino teamed up for a pro-gun control ad that aired during yesterday’s Super Bowl. At The Daily Beast, liberal UCLA law professor Adam Winkler argues that not only is the ad likely to backfire, it might just hurt President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign as well. He writes: Gun-control proponents can only pray that Obama doesn’t take Menino and Bloomberg’s bait. Making gun control a more important issue in the election would be a terrible mistake for the president—and for the cause of gun control.... The people of Detroit are taking no prisoners.
Justifiable homicide in the city shot up 79 percent in 2011 from the previous year, as citizens in the long-suffering city armed themselves and took matters into their own hands. The local rate of self-defense killings now stands 2,200 percent above the national average. Residents, unable to rely on a dwindling police force to keep them safe, are fighting back against the criminal scourge on their own. And they’re offering no apologies.

The Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation on Monday was a pretty happy camp, despite last Friday’s “first-round” loss in an Illinois court case that – if it advances all the way to the Supreme Court – could put an end to judicial semantics games over the right to keep and bear arms.
That ruling is being appealed, and one might almost be compelled to thank the City of Chicago for paying its court-mandated legal reimbursement to SAF for the landmark Supreme Court case of McDonald v. City of Chicago. And the amount of that bill? How does $399,950 sound? |
