A 70-year-old Vietnam veteran defended himself with his legally concealed firearm against a pair of much younger armed robbers on Thursday near St. Louis, Mo. As the veteran was dropping off a friend, a 19-year-old male and a 23-year-old male pulled up next to him in a car, asked for directions, and then pulled out a gun. The 70-year-old veteran pulled out his own gun and shot at both of the men as they attempted to rob him. The 19-year-old suspect was killed and the 23-year-old was injured during the encounter. |

If you examined the armory of a SWAT team or special operations unit in the 1980s or 1990s, you would likely find a pile of often-used 9 mm submachine guns such as the Heckler & Koch MP5. These days, however, pistol-caliber carbines are relics of a forgotten mindset in most military and law enforcement circles. While 5.56 NATO carbines dominate today’s fighting-long-gun landscape, they are not necessarily right for every task. Carbines chambered in handgun cartridges fill a key void in the self-defense, training and shooting arsenals. Wilson Combat’s AR9 is a quality example of a carbine that sits within this important niche.

Georgia’s campus carry bill is seeking a resurrection in this year’s legislative session. Campus carry has been a controversial issue on college campuses around the state of Georgia. Beginning back in 2014 Georgia passed the Safe Carry Protection Act. This bill was nicknamed the ‘guns everywhere bill’ but it restricted carrying on school property and public universities. Last year House Bill 859 was introduced. House bill 859 would’ve expanded on the Safe Carry Protection Act. This bill was more commonly known as the campus carry bill.

Most of us, whatever our stand on the Second Amendment, would prefer that dangerous people not have guns. And by law in Illinois, they are not supposed to. But our state has been much too lax about making sure people who are legally barred from owning guns do not, in fact, keep a few firearms around the house. Let’s get serious about this. |

Do you know anyone who has decided to let someone else manage their finances? Just before Christmas, Obama finalized new rules banning Social Security recipients from buying a gun if they have trouble managing their finances.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted 235-180 to overturn that rule, with just two Democrats voting with the majority. This week, members of the Senate will face the same vote. |

The popularized narrative about the French Chauchat light machine gun is one that presents the automatic rifle as an unmitigated failure. Detractors tend to emphasize poor workmanship, delicate magazines, and they also regularly repeat the broadest possible generalization of all—that the Chauchat was prone to jamming. The origins of this mythology is a topic well covered in the book Honour Bound: Chauchat Machine Rifle by Yves Buffetaut and Gerard Demaison, as well as in Tom Laemlein’s 2012 article That "Damned, Jammed Chauchat." |

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, whose name was repeatedly taken in vain over the weekend by members of the Washington Arms Collectors (WAC) gathering for a monthly gun show in Puyallup, made big headlines over the weekend for stopping, at least temporarily, President Donald Trump’s travel suspension to this country by refugees from several nations. |

With Gov. Asa Hutchinson's low-income tax cut signed into law and his veterans tax break on his desk, lawmakers can focus in the session's fifth week on topics such as guns on college campuses, sales taxes on Internet purchases and voter identification. Hutchinson last week signed his key agenda item for the session, a $50 million income tax cut for for Arkansans earning less than $21,000 a year, set to take effect Jan. 1, 2019. This week, he is expected to sign the second part of his tax package, an income tax exemption for military retirement and survivor benefits, with certain existing tax breaks eliminated to offset the cost. |

Lawmakers are aiming to allow Pennsylvanians to use semi-automatic rifles to hunt. In November, Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation that would allow those guns to be used for hunting in the state. Jason Brown, a media relations manager for the NRA in Fairfax, Va., said, "They don't need to get back on target after putting a new cartridge in the chamber. They can keep their eyes on the animal. They can take the animal down in a safe, humane way, that limits the suffering for the animal and keeps their hunting on target." |

President Donald Trump’s nomination of 10th Circuit Court Judge Neil Gorsuch as the late Antonin Scalia’s Supreme Court successor is being roundly lauded by gun rights groups and, of course, prompting the gun control lobby to wail in drum circles of despair — even though the 49-year-old Harvard Law School graduate’s resume includes no significant Second Amendment rulings and, in fact, is considered by analysts to a track record of a thoughtful, restrained jurisprudence.
