Plans to triple a scheme that has armed thousands of village recruits, dismissing fears that the strategy could nurture a new generation of warlords.
Human rights groups and aid agencies have called for the plan to be scrapped, fearing it threatens to fuel conflicts and empower the kind of militia commanders who ravaged Afghanistan during years of civil war in the 1990s. The government of Hamid Karzai, the president, has also been wary of similar initiatives.
But Gen Petraeus said the scheme was vital in enlisting the support of locals.
“The idea is that these actually mobilise not just individuals, but communities,” he told the Financial Times. “Elders support it. The elders also police it to a degree.”

The orange signs posted throughout Chet Hibbard's pharmacy here relay a blunt warning: We Do Not Stock OxyContin. ... "I want people to know before they even get in the door that we don't have it,"¯ Mr. Hibbard said of OxyContin, which the authorities say is the most common target of pharmacy robberies here. "Outside hiring an armed guard to be in here 24/7, I don't know what else to do."
SUBMITTER'S COMMENTS: The headline says "thieves" when the article is about "robbers." Look it up; there's a difference. If the editors are illiterate, what hope do the readers have? "... I don't know what else to do." Duh, ever think of protecting your business yourself?

"A Pleasant Grove woman defended herself and her home against an intruder Sunday afternoon.
The 46-year-old woman told police she was home alone when a man broke into her house...She armed herself with a gun and confronted the man.
The two fought, and the man was able to take the gun from her. {emphasis added} A shot was fired during the scuffle, Capt. Michael Smith said. The woman ran, locked herself in her bedroom and armed herself with a shotgun. At least one other shot was fired, Smith said.
She called police from the bedroom, but they did not find the intruder. Smith said there is no indication the intruder was injured."

Submitter's note: She should have fired instead of "confronted." Lucky to be alive. |

Two former Philadelphia police officers have pleaded guilty in a plot to steal heroin from a suspected drug supplier.
Robert Snyder and James Venziale entered their pleas Monday, admitting that they conspired with another cop and drug dealers to steal drugs from a drug dealer and then re-sell them on the street. They are scheduled to be sentenced in May.
Venziale has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison after admitting he took part in a staged traffic stop of the dealer in May.
Snyder, who is not cooperating, faces a mandatory 10 years on drug and gun charges related to the scheme.

The same shop that made national headlines for opening America's first sex toy drive-thru is offering customers another tantalizing deal just in time for Valentine's Day: Trade your guns for "romance-inspiring gifts," aka vibrators and other intimate items.....
Submitter's Note: Good to see trade-ins don't automatically go for scrap.
Ed.: Also good to see taxpayers aren't funding this. Good old American private action. |

Women must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself. - Susan B. Anthony, July 1871
...
For some reason, women just aren't taught the basics of self-defense anymore. We simply expect the police to protect us, and SURELY nothing bad will ever happen to us. When I was a kid, I was told to carry a whistle and scream fire (because no one responds to "HELP" anymore), and the nice policemen would come to my rescue every time. I honestly believed this until I was attacked in my own backyard. No one came to my rescue...and it was a huge slap in the face to everything I believed until that point. It planted the seed that eventually grew into my ownership of first knives, then a firearm.

"Justifiable Homicide in Tennessee is one done in defense of self or others and in Tennessee you're authorized to use deadly force to defend yourself against deadly force," said Henderson.
When asked if a gunshot wound to the back was justifiable as self defense, Henderson responded, "There were multiple shots and determining the order of the shots in impossible. You can tell one shot is here, one shot is there, but you can't determine the order."
"So you can't say the first shot was the shot to the back? There’s no way for the medical examiner or anybody else can tell which shot was first. All they can say is where the shots where." |

While not opposed to the idea of private citizens packing concealed firearms, some local law enforcement brass said they hope new legislation won't make it easier for the wrong people to tuck weapons away.
"One point that we can't lose sight of in the debate (over concealed weapons) is the weight of responsibility attached to a person if they choose to carry that weapon," said Powell Police Chief Tim Feathers.
Senate File 47 would eliminate the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Wyoming.
Sponsored by Sen. Kent Jennings, R-Casper, SF 47 passed the Senate in a 20-10 vote Jan. 24. It was received by the House for introduction on Jan. 27. |

South Dakota lawmakers have introduced a bill in response to President Obama's federally mandated health insurance proposal that would require adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others by owning a firearm.
The legislation proposed by Republican Representatives Hal Wick, Thomas Brunner, Brock Greenfield and Senators Bruce Rampleberg and Tim Belgaka has received mixed reviews from South Dakota residents. |

While the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) prompted some interesting and often outlandish responses since its inception, a recent bill in South Dakota takes the cake.
The bill calls for any South Dakotan 21 and older to purchase a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”
My initial impression was that the bill was a bizarre response to the recent (and seemingly increasing) episodes of gun violence.
I even briefly entertained the notion that South Dakota might be making an attempt to become the Switzerland of America (guns for all, now try and invade us!). |

Guns, whether they're used in "real-life" for recreation, self-defense or hunting, or in the fantasy world of video games, as a toy of mass destruction -- they all have the ability to ignite controversy.
"There's a lot of people against guns, but why?" Bend resident Paul Cook said. "If everybody had a gun, nobody would be fooling around with anybody."
When tragedy strikes, like it did last month in Arizona, and there's no immediate answer as to why, many eyes turn to what caused the devastation -- not necessarily who. |

The latest roadblock to southwest border sanity came recently when the White House once again delayed the implementation of a proposed new reporting requirement for dealers along the Mexican line who are selling AK-47s and AR-15s obviously destined for the murderous narcotics vendors. It would require those retailers to instantly report to federal authorities the sale of two or more of these favored weapons. |

Tomorrow, Tuesday February 7, 2011 the Arkansas House Judiciary Committee will hear HB 1051 by Rep. Denny Altes, R-Fort Smith. The bill seeks to remove the post-Civil War "Black Code" designed to keep freed slaves (and poor whites) from openly carrying a handgun in public. |

Friday State Rep. Chris Holbert (R-Parker) and State Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray) introduced HB1205, the Constitutional Carry Act of 2011.
This bill is designed to do one thing: allow citizens who are legally eligible to possess handguns to carry that handgun without obtaining a costly, burdensome and bureaucratic permit.
One of the chief advantages this bill presents is that citizens are not put on any government tracking list merely for carrying the tools for self defense. Citizens in Vermont, Alaska and Arizona currently enjoy that right, and Wyoming could be joining that list in the next few months. |

Poor public policy with respect to firearms was even more egregious. The gunman used a Glock semiautomatic pistol with an extended magazine of 30 bullets and additional ammunition. Congress and President George W. Bush enabled this by allowing the federal ban on assault weapons to expire in 2004. The carnage was also facilitated by the Arizona legislature just last year permitting anyone over 21 to carry a concealed weapon without a background check. Gov. Jan Brewer signed this legislation, which the previous governor, Janet Napolitano, wisely vetoed.

House Speaker William O'Brien warned of criminal defendants packing as they await a verdict, teachers facing a felony if they disarm a gun-toting student, and the legalization of blackjacks and brass knuckles.
"Some bills should never see the light of day, and this is one of them," O'Brien said in a statement issued Monday. O'Brien and Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt said they favor alternative legislation that would eliminate the requirement for a concealed-weapon permit and eliminate licensing requirements for non-residents. |

There are some issues Democratic Presidents can't seem to win, and gun control is one of them. As a legislator, Barack Obama backed tighter gun laws; as a presidential candidate, he pledged restraint. "I'm not going to take away your guns," he said at a Pennsylvania glass factory in September 2008. He hasn't. Last year the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, citing "extraordinary silence and passivity," graded Obama an F on gun control. |

Just for possessing a “large capacity ammunition feeding device,” one could be arrested and charged. The burden of proof that one owned the device prior to the ban would be forced upon the innocent citizen as he was dragged through the courts. Proving its manufacturing date would be useless. Any ruling in the matter would be at the discretion of the authorities. Penalties for infractions of H.R. 308 would be 10 years in a federal prison and an undesignated monetary fine. Basically, H.R. 308 would criminalize anyone in possession of a magazine holding 11 rounds or more. |

Republican leaders and lawmakers are united in wanting to remove licensing requirements for individuals who carry concealed weapons. But a broad bill that would, among other things, allow guns in courthouses and place criminal penalties on law enforcement officers, has highlighted a fissure, even among gun rights activists.
House Speaker William O'Brien and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt have asked freshman Rep. J.R. Hoell, a Dunbarton Republican, to withdraw his gun rights bill, calling it an "unacceptable risk" for New Hampshire residents. |

Nearly one month after she lost her fiancé Gabe Zimmerman to a bullet in a Tucson, Ariz. parking lot Kelly O'Brien called on the Arizona state legislature to pass a bill that would reduce the amount of bullets in a magazine to 10.
“I absolutely support it...And it is so sad to see 19 people gunned down in just 15 seconds by one of these extended capacity clips," O'Brien said on "GMA."
I asked her if she thought passing that law would limit constitutional rights under the Second Amendment. But O’Brien compared it to free speech and yelling “fire” in a crowded theater, saying that “everything within reason should have limits.” |

Greene fails to point out that the Second Amendment is contained within the first 10 amendments, which comprise the Bill Of Rights. These are the very foundation upon which our constitutional republic is built upon. To (repeal the Bill of Rights) would require the fundamental transformation of our very nation and the complete loss of the right to the self defense of ones liberty. |
