... "If the Supreme Court agrees to hear a pending appeal in a New York case, that neglect [of the Second Amendment] may soon be addressed. ..."

"A Virginia lawyer, David D. Bach of Virginia Beach, has embarked upon a personal quest to clarify the murky language of our Founding Fathers. He brings impeccable credentials to a difficult task. He has served for 25 years as an officer in the Naval Reserve, including 12 years of active duty as a Navy SEAL. He returned recently from a tour of duty in Iraq. He's now attached to the Navy's Office of General Counsel."

"... but when he applied for a similar [carry] permit in New York, he hit a stone wall. ... Nine months ago, a panel of the U.S. 2nd Circuit unanimously upheld the state's unfriendly law." ...

"The shooting last week of 6 innocent people at a mail processing facility in California by an ex-postal worker armed with a handgun highlights the need for strict gun control. After all, if some tough gun control laws had been on the books, this could never have happened. Oops! I forgot – California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. Then, just how could this multiple shooting have happened and what are we going to do to see that it doesn’t happen again? If you are a liberal, your first thought will be to pass some new laws that will focus on firearms as the culprit." ...

... "Let’s look at [mass public shootings] from the victim’s side instead of the coroner’s side."

"Why do we summon police?"

"We summon them for their training, their authority and their force. They act on behalf of the community and they document things. They do a lot more."

"They derive their training from experience of others who then pass it down. Whole generations of mistakes, new ideas and tactical judgment. They derive their authority from we the People, who authorize them."

"If we direct them to break off Code Three high speed chases, they’re dropped; if we direct them to modify policy to drop choke holds, no more choke holds; the People authorize and direct the police, not the other way around. With me so far?"

"And then there’s force. Guns." ...

... "Indeed, according to at least one weapons expert, Americans are feeling the need for gun ownership to protect themselves like never before. This trend started with the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. 'For decades, Americans have been brainwashed into taking a passive role in their own survival,' says Chris Bird, a journalist and handgun expert. 'On Sept. 11th, we learned that the government and the professionals could not protect us.'"

"Bird is so convinced of the need for people to take their protection seriously that he wrote a book titled, The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self-defense. ..." ...

... "Not content with the limitations in the Incumbent Protection Act, Sen. McCain has struck again. In an effort to reap political advantage from the current controversies in Congress, McCain has now introduced S. 2128 -- the so-called Lobbying Transparency and Accountability Act."

"In this bill, McCain targets his wrath on groups like GOA -- requiring them to register their 'grassroots' communications with their members and to file twice as many frivolous reports."

"Sen. McCain would rather shine the spotlight on us and YOU, rather than shine the spotlight on himself -- remember, he was one of the original Keating Five senators and was the ONLY Republican in the Keating Five 'team.'" ...

"The news confirmed warnings from homeland security experts that .50-caliber sniper rifles, capable of shooting down a civilian airplane during takeoff or landing, are a weapon of choice among terrorists. A study from the Violence Policy Center in 2001, 'Voting from the Rooftops,' revealed that Al Qaeda purchased .50-caliber sniper rifles in the United States ..." ...

KABA Note: Actually it was the US government that purchased the rifles. They then gave them to (among others) Al Qaeda to help them drive the Russians out of Afghanistan.

"Guns are in nearly half of all households in the United States. While the decision to own a gun is up to each family, gun safety awareness and education for children is a vital part of that decision."

"According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of firearm deaths among children 15 years of age and younger is almost 12 times higher in the U.S. than in other modern industrialized countries."

"A 2002 UNC study found that 36 percent of gun owners with young children in the home report keeping a firearm loaded. At least half of them failed to lock the weapon or store the ammunition in a locked box." ...
-------

KABA Note: Accidental deaths (the ones that supposedly would be reduced by "safe storage" laws) comprise about 1/8th of the total, and 14 - 15 year olds make up almost half the remaining number, which leads to the obvious conclusion that training is the key.

The state attorney general's office and city police say a Manchester man was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed a Massachusetts man trying to rob him last fall.

Francisco Cruz, 20, of Lawrence, Mass., died on Oct. 16, 2005. Authorities said yesterday the shooter, Greg Stroman, had not committed a crime because Cruz and an accomplice entered Stroman's apartment armed with deadly weapons and threatened several people inside.

Cruz had a handgun and Raphael Pamphile had brass knuckles when they entered the apartment that night, police said.

"It’s rare that a bullet flies through the air in the legislative offices of the General Assembly, as it did Jan. 26 when Delegate John S. 'Jack' Reid, R-Henrico, says he accidentally fired his gun in his seventh-floor office. But in at least one respect, Reid’s in good company: 11 of his Capitol colleagues have permits to carry a concealed weapon, according to Virginia State Police records. And at least one other legislator can carry a concealed weapon under a different statute. Style reviewed the names of the 119,370 Virginia residents who possessed such permits — which Virginia law requires and state police collect — as of July. Since then, about 6,000 names have been added to the list ..." ...

"I know this because of an e-mail exchange I had with chapter spokesman Scott Henson, who chided:"

"—'Your interpretation of House Bill 823 relies on an analysis by a handful of prosecutors who opposed the law, but not the bill language itself.'"

"—'It's true that some prosecutors are telling police to keep arresting people ... but they are raising a red herring. The law is really not unclear.'"

"—'The lawmakers wanted drivers to be able to have a stowed gun driving to the bank or the grocery store.'"

"And the real shocker:"

"—'I was closely involved in the legislative process that created the new law.'" ...

A Bay County commissioner said he mistakenly tried to bring a loaded gun onto an airplane. WKGC radio reports that George Gainer said he forgot the loaded gun was in his carry on luggage.

He was taking a flight to Atlanta when security screeners spotted the firearm. Gainer told airport police he put the .38 caliber pistol in his bag months before and simply forget to take it out.

The commissioner apologized at Tuesday's board meeting for any embarrassment caused to the county. He called it a "very stupid mistake."

The Transportation Safety Agency was investigating the case.

THE ISSUE: The NRA's role in blocking the nomination of Bloomberg's girlfriend to head the FDIC.

Even money can't buy you into a powerful organization like the National Rifle Association ("Snub," Deborah Orin, Feb. 4).

It's not what you have, it's who you patronize and who your friends are.

Yet a million dollars donated to friends doesn't buy you true friendship.

Aren't we all so vindictive?

"'We call it suburban hunting,' said McCarthy, a retired police lieutenant who lives in Framingham. 'It's kind of wild.' From his deer stand, he said, he can see a house, people, and cars going by."

"A nationwide amnesty in a bid to cut knife crime is expected to be announced today."

"Such an amnesty would be the first for 10 years, when tens of thousands of knives and other weapons were handed into police stations following the stabbing of a headteacher."

"Labour had indicated before the last election that it intended to launch another amnesty and ministers hope a huge national call to hand in knives will save lives."

"One prominent campaigner, however, has already said that a new amnesty would merely be a 'headline grabbing' scheme that would have little effect on actual street crime."

"The last national amnesty - which lasted from December 1995 to January 1996 - netted around 40,000 potentially lethal weapons." ...
