Seventh brief on the page

"Fred Dry doesn't faze easily, having served in the military. Even so, he was surprised to find a man's body and a ski mask near his southeast Houston house Tuesday."

"Omar Jamal Jett, 25, shot three times in the chest, was believed to be one of four intruders who got into a gunbattle with Dry's neighbors during a home invasion one block away in the 10400 block of Kirklane about 10:15 p.m. Monday."

"Jett's companions are believed to have fled in a late-model, turquoise Dodge Durango with step-up rails. Investigators recovered a blood-spattered AK-47 outside the invaded home."

"So they're going to play a very risky game with amendments that if passed will violate the Constitution & your Rights. They imply that they will fight for it, but they never directly state how hard. Now you can chalk this up to a risky strategy or malicious intent or anything else, but for our purposes the motive doesn't matter right now. What matters is their actions & while I have no doubt that they will publicly & openly oppose any gun control amendments on the scale of continuing the AWB or shutting down gun shows across the nation, I doubt seriously if they will withdraw the underlying bill to keep gun control from passing."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

South Bend's Fraternal Order of Police want to keep stun guns out of the hands of residents.

The group is supporting a proposed ban on the sale and possession of stun guns in the city.

State law allow anyone older than 18 to have a stun gun. The South Bend ordinance would allow for fines of up to $500 for a third offense.

Police say stun guns pose a danger to them when they are out in the field.

The proposed ordinance is on South Bend City Council's agenda for consideration at its March 8th meeting.

"Lorenz, an Oswego police officer on a voluntary leave of absence, now faces one to three years in prison, with the possibility of probation."

"The charges stem from an accident in the early morning hours of Nov. 9, 2003, in which Lorenz, 23, was driving south on Orchard Road near Galena Road around 12:15 a.m. when he skidded off the road and injured his passenger, fellow Oswego officer Patrick Wicyk."

Second letter on the page

FULL TEXT BELOW:

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate will decide whether to give the gun industry special privileges that no other business in America has. The immunity bill, which has 59 Senate sponsors, including Minnesota's Norm Coleman, would exempt gun shops and the gun industry from civil lawsuits. The bill takes away the rights of gun victims to hold the gun industry accountable for the irresponsible manufacturing or selling of firearms.

It's a bad bill that shouldn't become law — but it probably will. The only good that could come from it would be an amendment to strengthen the assault weapons ban. The federal ban on assault weapons will expire this September unless Congress acts.

If you're one of the thousands of Minnesotans who believe concealed-carry shouldn't have become law, now's your chance to speak out. Ask Sen. Mark Dayton to support the Feinstein assault weapons amendment; and tell Sen. Coleman you're disappointed he sponsored the NRA's bill.

A response to Raymond Hollstein's Letter of the Week (Forum, Feb. 22) is in order. Self-protection is a sham? Tell that to the thousands of people who use firearms for self-defense every year. The cases are well documented, at least eight every month are referenced in the National Rifle Association's magazine, "American Hunter."

Just because you don't read about it in the paper doesn't mean it doesn't take place. The newspapers, like the rest of the media elite, are self-admittedly liberal and don't want these defense cases to be publicized.

"Early on the morning of March 19, the burglars returned. Tony, armed and standing guard, ordered them to stop, but says the intruders ran toward him in the darkness. He fired, hitting all three burglars; one, Jonathan Steinbach, 24, died of his wounds. A Baltimore County grand jury heard the case and decided against indicting the Geckle brothers."

"That should have been the end of it. Unfortunately, Steinbach's estate has filed a lawsuit demanding $13 million from the Geckles and Back River Supply. The lawsuit contends that the burglar's 4-year-old child has suffered because of his father's death. While this is undoubtedly true, it is absurd to claim that the Geckles or their company are responsible for this; the fault lies with Steinbach, who chose the wrong line of work."

New Mexico is one of the top 15 states in the country for crime gun exports, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

An analysis of federal gun traces in 2001 showed that nearly 400 firearms purchased in New Mexico were used in crimes in other states.

Experts said one possible reason for that is that New Mexico and the other top states in crime gun exports do not require private dealers at guns shows to conduct background checks on customers.

Texas and Arizona received the largest shares of New Mexico’s crime gun exports, the analysis showed.

Ya gotta love an editorial which begins with a lie:

"Ten kids a day die of gunshots in this country, but all Congress seems prepared to do is protect gun dealers."

Ten kids do NOT die of gunshot wounds in this country each day, if you exclude "children" ages 19-24 and "children" involved in criminal activity, shot by police or armed citizens or their own gang buddies.

But the facts don't sway shrill gun control activists, who, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, continue to shriek about blood in the streets.

"It's incredible that Congress and the White House would look out across a nation bloodied by gun violence and say all that's needed is a legal shield for the gun industry."
