Despite the symbolic victory for Democrats, the bill remains unlikely to become law anytime soon. Senate GOP leaders have suggested they will not take up the bill, and President Donald Trump has already vowed to veto it if it makes it to his desk. The House vote was far short of the number that would be needed to override that veto.

In reading it, you will see it’s quite short, and that’s by design. The bill is narrowly tailored, so much so that it has been estimated to be applicable in only 10 or fewer cases per year. The bill premise is to provide a pathway to civil liability for the victim(s) of a felony crime committed with a firearm, even if the firearm was operated by someone other than the owner. This would allow Lauren McCluskey’s family to seek civil damages against the owner of the gun that killed their daughter, as the firearm was given willingly by the custodian. It does not create any criminal penalties, penalize lending weapons, punish firearm owners or infringe upon anyone’s constitutional rights.

The anti-gun politicians in the House of Representatives continue to employ the shameful tactic of exploiting tragedies to market gun control that won’t prevent criminals from committing murder. It’s a sham and the Charleston Loophole bill is the perfect example of their dishonesty. The assertion that a supposed 10-day delay would have prevented a crime that took place over 60 days after the initial delay is ridiculous.

In the aftermath of Washington, D.C. v. Heller, the Oklahoma Legislature is on the verge of making this state awash in guns of all calibers, function and type.

Heller is the worst misreading decision of the U.S. Supreme Court interpreting the U.S. Constitution since Dred Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson Ironically, Heller opted to disregard the primary reason for the Second Amendment, which was to arm slave owners against slave rebellions.

Patriot Prayer members and a Washougal gun shop owner turned out to a Washougal City Council meeting Monday to ask city leaders there to declare Washougal a “Second Amendment sanctuary city” and instruct local police to not enforce a set of voter-approved state gun control laws.

More than 50 people attended the council meeting, including Joey Gibson, founder of the Vancouver-based Patriot Prayer group; Eric Hargrave, owner of Limitless America, a Washougal firearms retailer; and a film crew shooting footage for a “VICE News Tonight” program that will air on HBO in the spring.

I was at a local practical pistol match earlier this year, chatting with some of my friends, and one of them mentioned that she had just started taking a close-quarters jiu jitsu training lessons to help round out her self-defense skills.

“Why would you want to do that?” another friend said. “You carry a gun. You won’t ever need that.”

The Democratic-controlled House on Wednesday approved a measure requiring federal background checks for all firearms sales and transfers, the first major gun-control legislation considered by Congress in nearly 25 years.

Democrats called the 240-190 vote a major step to end the gun lobby’s grip on Washington and begin to address an epidemic of gun violence, including 17 people who were killed at a Florida high school last year.

The bill is the first of two that Democrats are bringing to the House floor this week as part of an effort to tighten gun laws after eight years of Republican control. The other bill would extend the review period for background checks from three to 10 days.

The OSBI is currently in charge of applications for permits and renewals.

Marshall University’s president said he believes the lives of students and employees will be at risk if the campus carry bill is passed by the Legislature.

House Bill 2519, the Campus Self-Defense Act, was approved Wednesday night by the House and now will be considered by the Senate. It would have to be signed into law by Gov. Jim Justice.

The bill as proposed would make it legal for anyone with a conceal carry permit to carry a gun on college campuses.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. — Winston Churchill
