Over 30 years ago I was talking with a manufacturer who specialized in aftermarket items for the Ruger 10/22. I asked him, with all his manufacturing expertise, why he didn’t make a firearm himself. I remember him telling me, “There is no real markup in guns for retailers. The real money comes from accessories and the owner’s desire to ‘customize’ his gun.” |

An attempted robbery at a Chick-fil-A in Georgia was reportedly thwarted by an armed citizen who held the suspect at gunpoint until authorities could arrive.
Several customers confronted the man on his way out of the restaurant, one of whom as armed. The armed customer reportedly fired two shots and held the suspect at gunpoint until authorities could arrive. Witnesses initially said the suspect, too, had fired a gun during the attempted robbery, although police later confirmed that the armed bystander was the only individual to fire any shots.
No one was injured during the incident. |

John Adams was not alone in understanding that our Constitution functions only if people have a shared morality derived from Judeo-Christian principles. James Madison wrote that our Constitution requires "sufficient virtue among men for self-government"; otherwise, "nothing less than the chains of despotism can restrain them from destroying and devouring one another." It's not clear that 21st-century America has that necessary virtue.

In Arkansas, “Stand Your Ground” legislation (S.B. 24) was recently passed by both houses of the Arkansas legislature and signed into law by Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R). This NRA-backed legislation removes the legal need for a citizen to retreat in the face of an attacker. The previous legal standard in Arkansas required that a person under attack or threatened with attack must first attempt to flee or retreat before the person could use deadly force against his or her attacker.
