A jury in Brown County has acquitted a man who claimed he was defending himself and his daughter when he fatally shot her boyfriend in 2020.
After eight hours of deliberation, the jury on Tuesday night found Jarrett Jones not guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first- and second-degree manslaughter.

A group of gun control advocates is urging Republican Gov. Mike DeWine to veto Sub Senate Bill 215, legislation that would allow Ohioans to carry concealed weapons without a permit or training requirements.
Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey is one of the law enforcement officials urging the veto. If DeWine does sign the bill that majority Republicans in the House and Senate passed, McGuffey says she will do what she can to hold him accountable.
“I’m not going to give up. I’m going to be a voice. I’m serious about this. Law enforcement is serious about this and we are not going to let it go. Governor DeWine is going to be held responsible for gun violence that results from the passage of this bill," said McGuffey. |

Tomorrow, the New Hampshire House is scheduled to consider pro-gun House Bill 1636, and anti-gun House Bill 1151. NRA Members and Second Amendment supporters are encouraged to contact their State Representative and ask them to SUPPORT House Bill 1636 and to OPPOSE House Bill 1151.
House Bill 1636: “ATV-Carry” allows the carry of a loaded firearm on an Off-Highway Recreation Vehicle (OHRV) or snowmobile. This legislation also helps to clean up the law from when Permitless Carry was passed and a snowmobile prohibition remained. If you can carry a gun in your vehicle, or on your person, you shouldn’t have to surrender your right to self-defense simply because you’re operating a snowmobile. |

Hoosiers may soon be able to carry a handgun without a permit.
A bill that would make that state law, House Bill 1296, is on Gov. Eric Holcomb’s desk after passing the Indiana House and Senate.
The legislation has received heavy criticism from law enforcement officials across the state, and now, the Marion County Prosecutor.
"The elimination of this very minimal requirement of the handgun license going through that process of getting fingerprinted trying to determine whether or not this person has a criminal conviction that would prevent them from having a firearm,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “All of those safeguards are no longer in place. " |

A bill that will allow Indiana gun owners to carry without a permit is headed to the governor's desk, but not without its share of controversy.
Greg Burge is a retired Indianapolis police officer and owner of Beech Grove Firearms.
He's for the "constitutional carry" bill that would allow persons 18 or older to carry a handgun in public without a permit.
"I believe in the Constitution," Burge said. "I have a real problem having to pay for what is my constitutional right, so that's probably my single biggest reason of why I'm in support of it."
He said a permit doesn't sign off on whether someone should carry a gun. |

An order announced that by vote of the non-recused active members of the court, the opinions filed on Jan. 20 were vacated.
VanDyke prediction came in a concurring opinion in which he said:
“I agree wholeheartedly with the majority opinion, which is not terribly surprising since I wrote it. But I write separately to make two additional points. The first is simply to predict what happens next. I’m not a prophet, but since this panel just enforced the Second Amendment, and this is the Ninth Circuit, this ruling will almost certainly face an en banc challenge. This prediction follows from the fact that this is always what happens when a three-judge panel upholds the Second Amendment in this circuit.” |

“SF102 is weak at best,” said. Rep. Bill Fortner, R-Gillette. “Do we want a bill that’s got teeth in it to … put us first or do we want a weak bill that does nothing to protect us?
SF102 had the support of Wyoming’s law enforcement officers, who opposed SF87 and one like it introduced and rejected in 2021 because it allowed them to be sued if they enforced a law someone considered unconstitutional.
“The reason being they thought police officers and sheriffs, all the law enforcement should have an upper hand to control we the people,” Fortner said.
Opponents also argued the bill would require action by one branch of government against another. |

The Missouri House approved legislation Wednesday that would allow people who have concealed weapons permits to carry their guns on public transportation.
The measure, which has been debated several times in recent years but has not become law, also would lower the age requirement from 19 to 18 years of age or older for a concealed carry permit.
The proposal also would remove the prohibition on the carrying of firearms in churches and other places of worship by a person with a valid concealed carry permit. |

“The court did not hold Margarita Santillan to answer for murder, three counts of attempted murder, or intentional and personal discharge of a firearm because the court found that Ms. Santillan acted in lawful self-defense,” Deputy District Attorney Alex Adams said in a statement. “We disagree with, but accept the court’s ruling.”
Miguel Rodriguez, a supervising deputy public defender who represented Santillan, said the judge’s decision affirms his early opposition to his client being charged with murder in the face of strong exculpatory evidence. |

An Evansville-based self defense and firearms tactical company is expanding. Our partners at WEHT-TV report LawMan Tactical plans to transform the site of the former Sunrise Plaza drive-in movie theatre into its Guntry Club.
The facility will feature an indoor gun range, fitness gym, coffee bar, a member-only bourbon bar, and restaurant, among other amenities.
Co-owner Bryan Bishop says the facility has been years in the making and was recently prompted by more people wanting to protect themselves in response to increasing crime rates. |

34-year-old Charles Lee Mayberry of Robbinsville has been charged with felony breaking & entering with intent to terrorize the occupant and misdemeanor communicating threats. Mayberry was arrested after allegedly barging into a residence northeast of Lincolnton where he was shot by the resident.
Deputies responded to the incident on March 5 after the homeowner called 9-1-1. The homeowner, a 33-year-old Lincolnton man, told dispatchers that he shot the intruder. |

A California man in the Inland Empire shot and killed a burglary suspect who broke into his home late Saturday night, authorities said.
Officers of the Fontana Police Department responded to a residence in the 7300 block of Cypress Avenue around 10:45 p.m. regarding a residential burglary, KTLA reported.
Upon arrival, they discovered the suspect had been fatally shot by the resident who was home alone when the male intruder was breaking into his house.
As a matter of self-defense, the homeowner fired at the suspect, police said. As soon as the perpetrator was neutralized, the man called 911 to report the incident. |

This week, the House will hear House Bill 1358, constitutional carry, on the floor. Please contact your state representative and ask them to SUPPORT HB 1358.
Currently, there are groups spreading false claims that HB 1358 somehow guts constitutional carry. HB 1358 is in-line with the type of constitutional carry in place around the country in many states. It does not change who is eligible to carry, where they may carry, or what they can carry. Georgia, like many states, has long had different standards on who may carry a firearm versus who may possess one. HB 1358 makes no changes to that. |

Boyd Ward's letter criticizing us for writing about knife laws on Feb. 20 gave us a graceful opportunity to make a correction.
We incorrectly credited Latetia James, New York's attorney general, for leading a bi-partisan effort to reform New York's knife laws. Worse, we mistakenly attributed the statement to Todd Rathner, vice-president of legislative affairs for Knife Rights, an organization that advocates for the rights of knife owners.
"Letitia James did not lead the effort to repeal bad knife laws in New York," Rathner wrote in an email. "The effort was led by NY Assemblyman Dan Quart and Knife Rights. James urged [N.Y. Gov. Andrew] Cuomo to sign it after it was passed, so she joined the effort as opposed to leading it." |

It’s the latest in a string of messages SAF has been using to energize and educate activists, who were recently reminded by Joe Biden near the end of his State of the Union address last week that gun control is still one of his top priorities.
