On a bright, cold morning last November, I walked Boston’s Black Heritage Trail, a hidden gem among the city’s trove of historic sites. I had followed it decades ago as a graduate student and was returning now with my mother after a recent move to Massachusetts. I was especially looking forward to revisiting one stop on the trail — Lewis Hayden’s house, in the now-affluent Beacon Hill neighborhood. |

President Trump began his presidency uttering the phrase “American carnage,” and the commentators scoffed. Every month, it seems, we get new evidence that the carnage is real. More Americans are dying of despair now than during any time in history, a new study finds. Suicide rates are climbing. Alcohol deaths are, too. The picture on drugs is even worse, with overdose deaths tripling in the past 20 years.

Responsible gun owners defended themselves again last week, but you didn't hear about it in the news. Instructor Tony Simon and host Rob Morse bring you four new examples.
-You’re 80 years old. Two men come into your delicatessen with their faces covered. One of them has a gun in his hand. -You hear someone at your back door. A second later, two armed men have broken into your home. -You work at a pawn shop. A young man walks up to the cash register and points his gun at you. -You recognize two people on your front porch. You open the door and they push their way inside. You're being robbed.

You say woo hoo! Michael Bloomberg, the obnoxious former New York City Mayor and multi-billionaire funder of everything gun-control has removed his hat from the presidential contender ring. That’s great news for America’s gun owners. Whew, we dodged a bullet, so to speak. Now we can rest easier. |

A state senator is filing legislation he says would fix problems with Illinois’ Firearm Owner Identification cards after a shooting last month in Aurora exposed flaws in the system. The Illinois State Police approved Gary Martin's application for a FOID card in 2014 after he lied about his criminal past on the application. He bought a gun, and only after applying for a concealed carry permit that same year did the agency discover a criminal conviction in Mississippi that should have prevented Martin from getting the FOID card in the first place. |

Micro-red-dot-equipped pistols are making a lot of headway in the concealed-carry world. A red dot optic can provide quick target acquisition and allows for easy racking of the slide if needed. I decided I wanted to start getting into the pistol optic world but didn’t want to cut into one of the slides on my carry guns. I found a solution in the ready-to-go Kimber Aegis Elite Pro 1911. |

Can we dispel, once and for all, the notion that "socialists," "democratic" or otherwise, actually believe in the socialism they peddle? "Socialists" love money, guns, walls, fossil fuels, Amazon, meat, private jets and cars, luxury apartments, mansions, and low taxes as much as anyone else.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing March 26 on gun control laws that will, according to The Hill, “likely focus on ‘red flag’ laws” that are gaining popularity across the country, but are troubling to Second Amendment activists who are concerned that they violate due process and other rights of people who are the subjects of such “extreme risk protection orders.”
One man in Maryland, Gary J. Willis of Anne Arundel County, was fatally shot by two county police officers when they served such an order at 5:17 a.m. last Nov. 6. Published reports say Willis met the two officers at the door with a gun in hand. He apparently set the gun down when he was handed the order, but picked it up again and a scuffle ensued. |

Gun law reform has generated community debate following the recent announcement of a push to amend Minnesota’s Constitution to specifically protect citizens’ right to bear arms. Minnesota is one of only six states whose state constitution does not include an affirmation of the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — namely, the right to bear and keep arms. The Minnesota Republican Caucus would like to change that. |

South Dakota's 2019 legislative session brought no shortage of contention to Pierre, with debates over everything from transgender issues to gun rights to driver's licenses to preschool. While lawmakers still have some decisions to make on industrial hemp and balancing the state budget, for the most part the outcome of the session has been determined. Most bills at this point have either died or moved on to Gov. Kristi Noem's desk for final consideration. |

Those who follow the gun control debate closely have had their eyes on Washington State. Ever since I-1639 passed in November, the issue of the initiative's constitutionality has been called into question. The National Rifle Association and the Second Amendment Foundation filed lawsuits over this very issue. Some Sheriffs believe the initiative violates the Second Amendment, which is why they've refused to enforce the law. Their refusal has sparked death threats and even letters from Secretary of State Bob Ferguson (D), threatening to prosecute those sheriffs who refuse to perform background checks. |

Saturday could have been the last Spring gun raffle for the Jamison Road Volunteer Fire Company. That's because the New York State Assembly has proposed a bill (A01413) that would prohibit organizations from hosting gun raffles. Jamison Road Fire Company hosts two gun raffles per year, one in the Spring and the other in the Fall. They are the fire hall's main fundraising events, bringing in more than $30,000 per year equal to 12 percent of the company's operating costs. |

It seems like just the other day when I was writing about how the moderate Republican Governor of Maryland was at least partially succeeding in curbing some of the more rabidly liberal impulses of the Democrats in his state. (Oh, that’s right. It actually was just the other day.) As it turns out, not all of the Democrats have been embracing the cross-party goodness, however. The NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) documents some of the comments put forward by the Maryland Democratic Party Secretary this month, and he’s not exactly taking that whole bipartisan spirit to heart, at least when it comes to the Second Amendment rights of his state’s citizens. |

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board plans to consider new rules including allowing first-time adult deer hunters to participate in a youth hunting season proposed for late October. Other highlights of the proposed changes to the state's deer hunting regulations that were presented to the board last month include continuing buck age management through regional antler point restrictions and an annual limit of one legal buck. The proposals would also extend the archery season, increasing archery hunting in high deer density areas and allow crossbows for all ages of hunters. |

House Democrats led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi have nixed an effort to discourage voting by non-citizens in local elections just one week after they voted to impose additional restrictions on the Second Amendment rights of citizens in what a growing number of people see as a rush toward a constitutional collision.
According to the Washington Times, the 228-197 vote “came as part of a broader debate on Democrats’ major legislative priority this year, HR 1, the ‘For the People Act,’ which includes historic expansions of voter registration and access, as well as a major rewrite of campaign finance laws.” Translation: Democrats insist that gun control is really “gun reform,” but election reform is really discrimination. |

For Americans, the crux of gun control laws has been how to disarm dangerous individuals without disarming the public at large. Ever-present in this quest is the question of how the perception of danger should impact guaranteed freedoms protected within the Bill of Rights. Not only is such a balancing act difficult as-is, but there are also two additional factors that make it even more challenging: America’s federal government is constitutionally bound by the Second Amendment, and politicians notoriously take advantage of tragedies to pass irrational laws when emotions are at their highest. |

Debate on gun legislation reached a crescendo at the Arkansas state capitol Wednesday when a senator fervently denounced a bill that would make it easier to use lethal force in the name of self-defense. The bill, sponsored by three Republican state senators, would remove a clause from the current law that required a “duty to retreat” in self-defense cases. Previous efforts to push similar “stand your ground” laws in the state, under both Democratic and Republican legislatures, have all failed within the last decade, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports. |

Advocates for gun rights and gun control are expected to pack a Connecticut legislative hearing on several firearms bills, including measures that would tighten safe storage laws and require people openly carrying guns to produce their permits if police ask. The legislation to be debated Monday at a Judiciary Committee public hearing in Hartford has spurred a flood of written testimony that has been submitted to the panel, both for and against the bills.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero (42B.C) |
