" 'Bowling for Columbine' has struck a chord in Japan for several reasons. The biggest, perhaps, is that the movie's fervent anti-gun message hits home in a country where gun-control laws are strict and gun-related crimes are scarce. The connection Moore draws between America's violence at home and its saber rattling abroad has also struck a nerve amid polls indicating strong opposition here to a U.S.-led war against Iraq."

"We have three real problems in this country that indeed set dangerous precedents. One of them, obviously, is the attempt of liberals like Sandra Babcock who try to undermine the constitution and our country's sovereignty. The second is neo-conservatives who support the current administrations attempt to destroy our constitution and create a tyrannical dictatorship in this country. The third problem is the large majority of Americans who seem oblivious to the attempts of both sides."

Canadian Immigration and Randy White want to kill my husband over a half a gram of a tiny mushroom stem he used as an exhibit to prove a theory, which he later published in a book. In a city where law-abiding citizens are disarmed and left to the mercy of armed criminals, while their elected officials are busy prosecuting citizens guilty of nothing more than defending their families without the permission of the nanny state, is it any wonder that people are scared?

"One of the reasons waiting lists are so long is because there aren't enough nurses to keep hospital beds open, but perhaps more lives can be saved with improvements to hospitals than through gun buy-backs."

"We pollute the atmosphere more than any other country. We're such gun-lovers that citizens and visitors are 10 to 100 times more likely to be killed by a gun-wielding idiot than in any other 'civilized' country."

"No wonder Americans are hated and feared by many people of so many other countries. No wonder that some of that hate was so intense that 9/11 occurred. I'm afraid Americans have not proved themselves very likeable."

-------
Even if the above tripe were true, apparently this letter writer feels strong enough dislike for America to make excuses for the slaughter of thousands of innocent people because they're Americans and not very "likeable." May we suggest a one-way ticket to Baghdad for this "gentleman?"

NH: Gun Control Supporters Target Legal Loophole

FULL TEXT BELOW

Gun-control supporters again are trying to close a legal loophole they claim would allow mentally ill people to buy guns in New Hampshire.

Federal law requires background checks designed to bar sales of guns to convicted felons and people subject to domestic violence restraining orders.

The law also applies to people committed to mental institutions by the courts and people found mentally incompetent to stand trial. But background checks won't catch them because New Hampshire is one of 33 states that doesn't report mental health records to the national instant-check system.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would change that. Supporters say commonsense, and federal law, states that mentally ill people shouldn't have firearms. But opponents say it's overly broad and could result in people being wrongly placed on the list.

A similar bill was tabled last year.

In October 2001, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act, controversial legislation that broadened law enforcement powers, especially to combat money laundering. "The per capita suicide rate in Japan is roughly twice that of the United States. And a recent surge in debt-linked suicides is alarming this nation, battling a long slowdown that has sent unemployment, bankruptcies and bad debts soaring."

All the anti-gunners' attempts to link the presence of guns and suicide have not been able to explain away the phenomenon of incredibly high suicide rates in a society where private ownership of guns doesn't exist.

"From this wisdom was born three-strikes laws that punish incorrigible felons with life imprisonment. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court held in Ewing vs. California (March 5, 2003) that the Eighth Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishments is undisturbed by terms of imprisonment that put an end to careers in criminality. What astonishes is not the majority decision, but that four justices dissented and that the case sparked controversy."
