Gun owners in Utah likely would have the ability to carry weapons in more places than ever before. Two gun bills to grant people the ability to keep guns in their cars and homes await a final, mostly technical vote before going to the governor for his signature.
SB78 would require business owners to allow guns in vehicles in private parking lots... The guns could be loaded or unloaded, though business owners could mandate only unloaded weapons on their property...
HB357 would allow adults to keep a loaded, concealed weapon at home, on private property or in a vehicle. The bill was amended to prevent minors from carrying a gun and also would ban carrying a loaded rifle or shotgun in a moving vehicle as they can discharge if jostled. |

After November's election, gun shops across the country saw a spike in sales... Since then people are also buying ammo and now there's a shortage of it... "The shelves are empty. If they do get a shipment, people just buy it up like that,"....It's the common types of ammunition that are sold out...
In a statement to News 4 a White House spokeswoman says, "Millions of hunters and shooters own and use guns each year. The President of the United States believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. His administration is committed to protecting the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns." |

Gun control at a highly restrictive level New York has never seen before is imbedded in a local law under consideration at the moment by the Albany County Legislature. Local Law "A" for 2009 would tightly regulate "in the interests of public safety" all ammunition sold in Albany County. Not just ammo for handguns, which already is closely monitored by state law, but all rifle and shotgun ammunition as well. Hunting and target shooting ammo, basically. Anyone buying rounds or shells, even .22s, would have to show identification, declare the gun and have its serial number registered with the ammo seller. The buyer would have to state his intent of use, and could be refused the purchase. |

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A committee of the Illinois Senate has rejected a proposal to give Illinoisans the right to carry concealed weapons.
Senate Bill 1976 would allow county sheriff's to issue concealed carry permits to qualified gun owners. The idea was voted down by members of the Senate Public Health Committee, which is dominated by Chicago-area lawmakers.
State Sen. John Jones, a Mount Vernon Republican who sponsored the proposal, said he wasn't surprised by the rejection, given the makeup of the panel. Concealed carry efforts have long been supported by downstate lawmakers, but opposed by Chicago-area lawmakers.
The Senate's action makes passage of 3 similar bills making their way through the Illinois House doubtful... |

More than 1,000 serving police officers have criminal records, figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show.
The 1,063 officers were convicted for a range of offences including 59 for assault, three for burglary and 93 for dishonesty, according to statistics from 41 of 52 forces.
A further 210 officers have resigned or been dismissed from their posts since 2004 because of their criminal convictions. The Liberal Democrats, who requested the data under the Freedom of Information Act, said police chiefs should "get tough on bad apples" within their forces.
The party's home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne told The Sun newspaper: "I can't see how an officer convicted of dishonesty can perform duties effectively... |

Remember the massive land bill, S. 22, that passed out of the Senate last month?
It was expected to pass quickly in the House, but your opposition to an expansion of gun control contained in the bill forced it to be pulled from the floor.
Gun Owners of America has just learned that after some backroom deals, the bill is headed to the floor WEDNESDAY MORNING, without any amendments to truly protect your Second Amendment rights on National Park Service (NPS) land. |

An Arkansas lawmaker says she will reintroduce a bill to allow concealed weapons in churches after a deadly Illinois church shooting...
State Rep. Beverly Pyle (R-Cedarville) originally introduced a measure 1/29 to remove "any church or other house of worship" from a list of places where people licensed to carry concealed weapons are prohibited from bringing their guns.
The bill passed the Arkansas House of Representatives...but then died on a voice vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee 2/25.
After a gunman entered First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., and killed Pastor Fred Winters with a gunshot to the heart,... she was making changes to the bill and planned to take it back to the committee hoping for more votes. |

The 2002 shooting at Gutenberg high school in the town of Erfurt in central Germany, came on the day that the country’s parliament approved a new Bill tightening its already strict gun controls... You have to have everything registered...Some 10 million guns are owned legally in Germany although police believe that there are twice as many held illegally in a population of 82 million.
"The law is strict. Your weapons container has to be locked at all times and the ammunition is inside in a separate cupboard. But if you have the key to the container then you have access to both things. The container is supposed to be screwed to the wall so that the container cannot be taken away. |

If you're a hunter or gun owner, you already know how hard it's become to find guns or even basic accessories like ammunition or parts.
Todd Borders is the Vice President of Borders Sporting Goods in Summit, Kentucky. He says finding guns these days isn't easy, even for shops like his.
"Most all the other dealers I know are having a difficult time," Borders said. "The distributors even the manufactures are running full staff and they just can't keep up with the demand right now." |

The deranged shooting dead of 10 people in Alabama, followed closely by a further 16 murders in Germany, will almost certainly be seized upon by gun control campaigners in the United States to further their agenda. In this they will find a willing ally in Barack Obama who, despite his weasel words after the Supreme Court outlawed the handgun ban in Washington DC (which he previously supported), has a record as a board member, for eight years, of the Joyce Foundation, which funds gun control groups, and as a long-time supporter of anti-firearms legislation.
Any American citizens who are tempted to go down the road of prohibition might be advised to consider the experience of Britain. |

Does U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder own stock in firearms manufacturers? His recent comment that the Obama administration might seek to reinstitute a federal ban on "assault weapons" only boosted gun sales that already had increased since the presidential election...
He's concerned that Mexican drug cartels are arming themselves with automatic weapons and grenades. Again, though, these weapons already are illegal. And it's hard to imagine organized crime syndicates like the cartels having any problems overcoming a U.S. ban on weapons that are singled out for their accessories.
If the Obama administration really wants to disarm the cartels, it should end the War on Drugs. It should not target lawful American gun owners. |

President Obama has chosen Seattle police Chief Gil Kerlikowske to be the nation's drug czar and lead a stepped-up campaign against substance abuse, VP Joe Biden announced Wednesday.
Biden said the 36-year law enforcement veteran will bring to the task a lifetime of experience working on drug policy.
"There's no one more qualified to take on this job than the chief," Biden told a White House audience..
Kerlikowske, 59, said he looked forward to his new role and noted his professional and personal experience with the effects of drug abuse on young people and families. His stepson, Jeffrey, has an arrest record on drug charges.
Ed.: As Chief of Police, Chief-loses-gun couldn't even secure his own handgun. Now that he is to be the "drug czar", will he have bricks of cocaine stolen from his car as well? Whatever happens, *please* don't give him the nuclear football to secure. |

Twenty-five Chicago Public School students have been murdered this year. As shocking as that number is, there is another figure that's very disturbing as well: the number of students who have been shot in a 16-month period is enough to fill an elementary school - 508 students, according to school officials. CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago's Chief Correspondent Jay Levine asks why, and what is being done to stop it.

BATON ROUGE -- College students, faculty and employees who are licensed to carry concealed handguns should be able to tote them on their campuses, where they are now banned, according to a bill filed Monday by Rep. Ernest Wooton, R-Belle Chasse.
The measure is identical to one Wooton abandoned on the House floor last year after getting the House committee he chairs to approve it 11-3. Wooton said last year he counted 46 votes of support, seven shy of what was needed, and withdrew the bill in the last stages..

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. — Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962 |
