Terrorism preparedness may be the least attractive subject you can think of, but preparing for the worst is an important part of keeping your family safe. Whether it’s an attack from abroad, or perhaps even scarier, an attack from within – terrorism is a very real threat. Even after the devestating attacks of 9/11, many question whether our government has taken an effective approach toward keeping our country safe. From increased drone usage to TSA’s “security theater” to our acceptance of refugees, many wonder if we are given only the appearance of safety. |

The House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies staged a hearing on “Addressing the Public Health Emergency of Gun Violence” on March 5. “That hyperbolic title, however, betrayed the real agenda of the event, which was to create the false impression that an unprecedented wave of firearm-related violence urgently demands an infusion of federal research dollars,” writes the NRA-ILA on March 7. |

Armed citizens with concealed-carry permits who want to evaluate or increase their skill levels often focus on one of the various law-enforcement-qualification courses as a guide. All can be valid skill checks as far as shooting goes, but one drawback for civilians is that many such courses involve the use of an exposed duty holster and include targets at ranges out to 25 yards (or more), neither of which is something the overwhelming majority of self-defense scenarios for us regular folks will entail. |

BANG! Ping. BANG, BANG! Ping, ping. Gunshots echoed through the trees of a rural farm, lead disintegrating into dust as it exploded against thick steel targets. The weapons had pastel-colored handles and pink bullet magazines. They belong to women, the fastest-growing population of gun owners. |

Childcare facilities would carry the same prohibitions on deadly weapons as K-12 schools, under legislation passed Monday by the Senate. “When parents send their kids off to school, they expect these facilities and grounds to be safe and secure,” said Sen. Claire Wilson, D-Auburn, one of the bill’s sponsors. “The state already prohibits people from possessing firearms on K-12 school campuses. This bill simply extends that same common-sense policy to childcare facilities.”

The House of Representatives recently passed legislation that would expand the national background check system to require almost everyone selling firearms, including private collectors who supplement their incomes by selling firearms at gun shows, to perform background checks on the potential buyers. The bill has a section purporting to bar creation of a national firearms registry. However, the expanded background check system will require the government to compile lists of those buying and selling guns. In other words, it creates a de facto national gun registry. |

It's been just under a week since Gov. Phil Murphy outlined his $38.6 billion state budget, including a proposed $9 million hike on gun fees and taxes. And that's sent shockwaves through New Jersey's community of licensed gun owners and second amendment supporters. Fred "Rick" Friedman, CEO and co-owner of gun range RTSP, said he's worried that if passed, the increases would make a constitutional right too expensive for a large part of the state's population. |

The Battle Ground City Council heard concerns over the implementation of gun control-focused Initiative 1639 as part of an ongoing push to have local governments in Clark County declare themselves sanctuaries of the Second Amendment, as proponents have called it. More than a dozen individuals testified during council’s March 4 meeting. All who spoke did so with opposition to the initiative which changes state law regarding sale and ownership of semiautomatic rifles. The initiative passed with close to 60 percent approval in November. |

Montrose county commissioners and Sheriff Gene Lillard met Monday to discuss the “red flag” gun bill currently making its way through the Colorado Legislature. The bill would allow law enforcement agencies to take firearms from people if a judge decides they are at risk of harming themselves or others. Lillard, Commissioner Roger Rash and Commissioner Keith Caddy spoke out in opposition of the bill, saying it restricts Second Amendment rights and sets a bad precedent for future gun control laws. |

After the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas, the phrase “bump stock” entered the public lexicon. What was, and always has been, a gun-range novelty was suddenly the subject of national discussion. In the months following the tragedy, Congress considered and ultimately rejected a law banning these devices. Eager to seize political capital, however, the Trump administration sought to ban them anyway.

Step into the unassuming storefront at 24 Soundview Drive and you’ll feel as though you’ve been whisked away to an English men’s club circa 1890. The dark custom-carved cabinetry and coffered ceilings lend a surprising coziness, while the pungent smell of fine leather permeates the air. Bronze statues of rams’ heads and ducks on the wing keep watch from atop high shelves.
