According to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, more than 30,000 people die from gun-related deaths each year…victims that never had a chance to weigh in on the gun safety conversation. I’m one of the 78,000 people a year who are lucky enough to survive a gun injury. Lucky is a relative term. I have a spinal cord injury. I struggle with relentless nerve pain. One gun, one bullet changes everything.

Complaints about Gov. Dannel Malloy’s proposal to increase the permit fees on firearms are coming in from gun owners who claim the tax is unfair. But does anyone who is taxed think they are fairly taxed? A permit fee on guns is similar to a tax on cigarettes. Cigarette taxes have risen astronomically — and for a good reason. Cigarette smoking has been proven to be a killer and anything to force a reduction in smoking is looked upon favorably. Guns are also a killer — as anyone who reads about violence in Newtown and other areas understands.

While U.S. President Donald Trump's vow to "totally" protect the Second Amendment has eased gun owners' worried minds, his lax stance on firearms is causing a negative impact on the outdoor retail industry.

The F.B.I. said it conducted 2.23 million background checks in February, representing a 14% decline from February 2016. Background checks were down 20% in January and 17% in December, as gun owners no longer feel the need to rush to stock up on firearms as they did when former President Barack Obama was pushing for stricter federal gun laws.
