With only a few days remaining before the end of Montana’s general wolf-hunting season on March 15, a record 315 wolves have been harvested across the state, with the bulk of them taken before cold temperatures and heavy snows made hunting and trapping conditions more difficult. As of March 10, preliminary results from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), the agency tasked with managing the elusive predators, indicate that hunters harvested 165 wolves and trappers killed 130. Train and automobile collisions were responsible for three mortalities, according to FWP. |
The CDC’s Gun Injury Data Is Becoming Even Less Reliable

Every year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issues an estimate of the number of people non-fatally injured by guns, but even by the agency’s own standards, its recent numbers may not be trustworthy. This year’s estimate is less reliable than ever.
According to the CDC’s most recent figures, somewhere between 31,000 and 236,000 people were injured by guns in 2017. That range, which represents the confidence interval — the high and low ends of a range of estimates that probably contains the real number, whatever that number is — is almost four times wider than the one given in the agency’s 2001 estimate. |

By the end of 1975, the military conflict in Vietnam had ended and many black veterans returned to a Washington, D.C. that had been dubbed “Chocolate City” by the funk band Parliament. The label referenced D.C.’s confluence of a booming black population, an emerging black political leadership, and a growing quorum of successful black businesses. However, there had also been a (then) record 407 killings the year prior, with 60 percent of those attributed to guns, and the majority of the victims African Americans. These murder trends had been steadily building up since the early 1960s, leading Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein to call D.C. “Dodge City” in a news story headline. |

It comes as 41 people have been killed in stabbings in the UK this year. Single kitchen knives are the most frequently stolen knives, Asda said, prompting the decision to stop their sale by the end of April.
Nick Jones, Asda senior vice-president, said the company had "a responsibility to support the communities we serve".
"Whilst we have already taken steps to restrict the sale of knives to ensure that they do not fall into the wrong hands, we felt there was more we could be doing to support those looking at how to bring this issue under control", he said.
The store said it would continue to sell multipacks of knives. |

On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations held a hearing supposedly geared toward “Addressing the Public Health Emergency of Gun Violence.” That hyperbolic title, however, betrayed the real agenda of the event, which was to create the false impression that an unprecedented wave of firearm-related violence urgently demands an infusion of federal research dollars.

A House panel Tuesday advanced two gun bills, backed by the National Rifle Association, that are reopening a debate about whether people with concealed-weapons licenses should be able to carry guns on school campuses used by churches and store firearms in vehicles on school property. The proposals are being considered a year after gun restrictions, opposed by the NRA, were passed by the Legislature in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Senate Bill 5434, approved by the Senate Monday by a vote of 26-21, would prohibit possession of a firearm, even by concealed pistol license-holders (CPL), at state-licensed child care centers. In fact, an amendment to exempt CPL-holders was voted down largely along party lines. Sponsor Sen. Claire Wilson (D-Auburn) says, “It just makes sense to make sure all our children are safe from firearms and gun violence in what we assume to be safe spaces.” |

In a public hearing for several gun bills that lasted for more than eight hours, the testimonies of concerned mothers, proud gun owners, weary police chiefs, and drained doctors were put forth for the Judiciary Committee's consideration. At times, groups of people in the crowd laughed, clapped, cheered, and expressed their discontent. Seas of orange t-shirts signified CT Against Gun Violence, red for Moms Demand Action, and black and denim for several members of Connecticut Citizens Defense League. |

Today, the word ‘hunting’ has taken on a whole different meaning from what hunting was like back in the sixties when I first began going afield after game and game birds. Back then high fences were rare in Texas and nonexistent in rural Red River County where I grew up. There were no scopes that allowed us to hunt hogs at night; there were wild hogs in some areas but the wild hog boon that began in the late seventies was yet to come.

There's a certain bravura, verging on chutzpah, to 2020 candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. She's claiming that Facebook is censoring her advertising, or at least it took some of it down, about the desirability of breaking up Facebook when, in fact, she or her team did not understand the terms and conditions that Facebook places on the use of its logo on its site. There is that certain bravura in demanding to be allowed to regulate big tech without apparently the first clue of how it is regulated now. Some might even say that rises to chutzpah.

Fact is, tactical shotguns haven’t evolved all that much over the last century. The majority of professionals still use John Browning-inspired Benellis, Mossberg 590s, Remington 870s and other variants for their ease of control, familiarity and reliability under duress—despite these guns’ shortcomings. But, if a few advancements from the last couple years bear out, all of that could be changing and changing fast. Indeed, it looks as if the Golden Age of the tactical shotgun is upon us. Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, let’s take a look at where tactical shotguns have been. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To have no proud monarch driving over me with his gilt coaches; nor his host of excise-men and tax-gatherers insulting and robbing me; but to be my own master, my own prince and sovereign, gloriously preserving my national dignity, and pursuing my true happiness; planting my vineyards, and eating their luscious fruits; and sowing my fields, and reaping the golden grain: and seeing millions of brothers all around me, equally free and happy as myself. This, sir, is what I long for. -- General Francis Marion, American War of Independence, Georgetown, SC [Source: 'Marion, The Life of Gen. Francis Marion' by M. L. Weems, Ch.18] |
