"Good Lord, what would we do without the Second Amendment Foundation? SAF was created in 1974, currently having 650,000 members, to combat anti-Second Amendment crusaders who use “safety” as an excuse to restrict our Second Amendment rights. Consistently battling the opposition in the Courts and otherwise, thanks to them, a positive Court ruling has been issued by the Honorable Judge Benson E. Legg in the Maryland district court on March 5, in the case of Woollard v. Sheridan." ...

Goldilocks Gun Control

"A friend of mine describes the antis' crusade against specific guns as 'Goldilocks' gun control. This is the idea that some guns are too big ('vest busters'), some guns are too small ('pocket rockets'), some guns don't have a 'sporting purpose' ('assault' weapons), some guns are too cheap (Saturday Night Specials), etc. ad infinitum. I say ad infinitum instead of ad nauseum because, unlike Goldilocks, the antis will never find the 'just right' gun. I see that Johnathon Purtle of Philly.com/Health is now trying to apply this same illogic to the age of gun owners. But of course this isn't a matter of discrimination it is a matter of 'public health'. ..." ...

"'To Serve and Protect' has been the motto of many police departments over the years. Unfortunately, as society continues to grow, half of that statement just doesn't work any longer. Our police departments do a good job of serving the public, but they simply cannot be everywhere at all times, thus, they are unable to protect us."

"The Brady Bunch has released their annual scorecard rating states based on how strict their gun laws are. The scorecard is a very useful tool to help rights groups understand how their state compares to others on a liberty scale; more points = less liberty."

"Alaska, Arizona, and Utah have all achieved the coveted Zero Points/Zero Stars on the Brady scale and are now competing to see which state will be the first into negative numbers – which is possible through bonus points. Arizona and Alaska can reach a –2 point score by protecting carry rights on campuses of state colleges and universities. Utah already has such protections, but could achieve a –2 score by adopting Constitutional (permitless) Concealed Carry ..." ...

"My grandfather was a writer and journalist for most of his adult life and had rather a way with words. One of my favorites was the phrase undulating lie. An undulating lie is when someone tells you something that is factually true, but so misleading as to constitute a lie. Like gawker.com saying:" ...

"Most Americans don’t think about gun rights. Why would they? They only have so much mental bandwidth. They’ve got to focus on paying the bills, getting the kids to, from and through school; finding time for friends and doing whatever it takes not to lose what they already have. I reckon it’s that latter priority that moves non-gun rights folk towards the pro-gun position. The knowledge that a firearm helps maintain their status quo. As for understanding or caring about the way firearms are regulated, meh. ... the general public thinks about gun laws in very simple terms, if at all. Luckily for gun rights advocates, the nature of that understanding has suddenly reached a tipping point, and changed . . ." ...

"There’s just something about a well-designed bolt-action rifle that I really like. And the Steyr Scout in .308 Winchester is one of the best I have ever shot. Many would consider the Scout, brainchild of both Jeff Cooper and Steyr, a hunting and fighting gun because of its size and caliber. "Over the many years I’ve been following the gun world in print, point shooting has been a shooting technique I’ve seen self defense instructors both laud and condemn in equal parts. Yet, despite all the strong opinions elicited and the large amount of ink spilled over this subject, I’m always surprised at how few shooters actually know what point shooting is let alone really practice it, which implores me to wonder aloud, as shooters, have we gotten used to newer methods of defensive shooting and forgotten the lost art of point and click?" ...

"Like so many religious arguments (revolver vs. semi-auto, AR vs. AK vs. FAL) the concealed vs. open carry debate arouses strong feelings and passionate discourse all around. So I’m going to throw that hand grenade out and see who jumps on it. There are two different imperatives driving the decision of whether or not to open carry; tactical and strategic. Now, when I say tactical I’m not referring to bayonets or picatinny rails on your carry weapon but tactical in the sense of what’s going on when the SHTF. The classic set-up goes something like this: a bunch of trigger happy pistoleros swap a bunch of 'real' stories that detail dramatize exactly what he or she would do if they were confronted by a bad guy and deadly scenario (or even better ... an entire horde of marauding criminals) with a rifle in their hand, concealed carry handgun on their waist or some over-the-top tactical rig under their clothes, providing them with a crazy combination of defense weapons." ...

That’s the recent Maryland Supreme Court ruling that the state can’t require citizens to show a 'good and substantial reason' in order to get a carry permit. Most of the piece is simply background on Maryland’s permit law and a reprise of the case. "To gun-rights supporters, the Supreme Court’s District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago decisions may have felt like a dream come true — the Court recognized an individual right to keep and bear arms, and applied that right to state and local governments. Going forward, handgun bans are off the table in the U.S."

"But judging by a conference hosted by the Fordham Urban Law Journal last Friday, the two sides of the gun-control debate have simply regrouped, recalibrated their expectations, and lined up for battle once again. As definitive as Heller and McDonald may seem, they offer little guidance to lawmakers and lower courts as to what kinds of gun control are still permissible." ...

"According to gun control advocates, you don’t need a gun. You, the law-abiding citizen, are protected by the police. The po-po have no legal obligation to protect you, but c’mon. You’re no a crime fighter. And see? Crime’s going down. So forget all this armed self-defense stuff, kick back and let the cops do their job. Nowhere is this agit-prop more prevalent than it is in New York City. ... But how would that play out if it were widely known that New York City’s Finest (air quotes optional) have been intentionally under-reporting all sorts of crimes, including assault, armed assault and armed robbery? That the threat against law-abiding citizens is larger than advertised? Well guess what Serpico fans? The Village Voice has news for you . . ." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821)
