For Big Gun, there is a lot riding on tiny pistols. The .380 semiautomatic handgun best embodies the trend: The guns feature grips smaller than an average person’s palm, with frames less than an inch wide and barrels usually about two inches long. And American manufacturers are cranking out .380 pistols in increasingly staggering quantities.

Dave Haddix never fired a gun until he was 50 years old. Now, seven years later, he carries one most days when he’s not working as a letter carrier. “It’s strictly about self-defense,” said Haddix, of Weymouth, to The Patriot Ledger.

“I think the older you get the more you pay attention to what’s going on around you. Just look at the opiate epidemic. People are trying to get money for that in a lot of bad ways.”

This week, in my country, considered by some of its more embarrassing denizens to be the “greatest country in the world”, an outspoken Florida “gun rights” advocate left a loaded .45 calibre handgun in the back seat of her car and was promptly shot and wounded by her four-year-old child. Truly a pinnacle of human potential, much like the invention of paper in second-century BC China, or Aristotle holding forth in the Lyceum, or whoever first pointed out that Florida looks like America’s penis.

It could not have come at a worse time — the sudden death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. When it comes to the Second Amendment — gun rights — Scalia was the best friend we sportsmen had. With 10 months left in his presidency, Barack Obama will now attempt to replace the conservative Scalia with a new justice, whose views are more in step with his liberal social agenda.

Why is the Second Amendment important? Because of the Third Amendment. First, let’s deal with less-lofty matters. It’s not hard to understand that if you’re attacked, or someone breaks into your home while you’re watching TV, dialing 911 isn’t the best way to defend yourself and loved ones.

It wouldn't be a General Assembly session if there weren't a debate over gun legislation. The same arguments, modified to fit the bills at hand, are dusted off and used every year.

We've endorsed gun control measures we believed were sensible, were not covered by existing regulations and had some chance of improving public safety.

Hank Williams, Jr. is not afraid of controversy, but according to the artist, his new song “God and Guns” from his most recent record It’s About Time doesn’t fall into that category.

While many may consider the sentiments in the tune envelope-pushing in today’s climate, Williams doesn’t see it that way. In fact, he says it reminds him of a song he’s released in the past. “In my world it’s not controversial. It’s pretty strong,” he says via Big Machine. “It reminds you of ‘Country Boy Can Survive.’ Very slow, low notes, big rockin’ build up.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Thanks to the government’s past record, it is unfortunately very predictable that, in spite of the severe penalties mandated, tens of thousands of people will not comply at all (with Bill C-68). A new class of criminal will be created among harmless citizens whose previous lawbreaking may have resulted in nothing more than parking tickets. — Lee Morrison, Canadian Mounted Police
