Both the backers and foes of Second Amendment "sanctuary" for Macomb County were disappointed Wednesday when a county Board of Commissioners committee failed to act on it, yay or nay.

The Government Oversight panel, a committee of the whole, in a 7-5 vote kept the resolution “tabled” indefinitely.

Dozens of people packed commission chambers on the ninth floor the county Administration Building, with supporters outnumbering opponents by a large margin. Many people spoke to the panel during public comments, a majority in favor of the resolution and right to bear arms.

Comments from both sides drew piercing claps.

“I fear a government that fears our guns,” said William Robinette of Clinton Township.

The owner of Shoot Center says it’s not just hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies flying off local shelves.

“Since the beginning of the month, we’ve sold about 200,000 rounds,” said Aaron Forum.

Ammo sales are surging amid coronavirus concerns.

“It’s nationwide. All major distributors right now are sold out completely of 9 millimeters,” he said.

Ammos sales have tripled here in the last two weeks. While this store and others we reached out to still have ammo in stock, it’s unclear when re-supply shipments are coming.

I am writing today because our Second Amendment rights are under attack. Democrats like Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Tedra Cobb want to take away our legally owned guns. Our founding fathers explicitly wrote a broadly applicable Second Amendment because they had just fought off a tyrannical government and wanted to protect us citizens in case our government ever became corrupt and lost its way.

I’m watching the news media and the government go nuts over the flu. That increased my level of skepticism about our public institutions. That was my frame of mind when Bill Frady asked me, “Didn’t we learn what to do from the first school attacks? Why was there ever a second school shooting in the USA?” Bill asked the right question under the right circumstances, and I think Bill is right. We should have learned from the first attack, but we didn’t. We know how to stop mass public violence, but, too often, we chose not to.

The November election is a high stakes one for control of Congress as well as the presidency, but how do voters feel about what is going on in the country now? What issues are most important to them?

Hunter Burkart, an Oldenburg Academy senior, says, "Gun control is probably the most important to me, as I'm a strong believer in the Second Amendment, and imposing gun control laws would have terrible effects on the country."

Supporters say Senate Bill 1384 would create a first line of defense to make schools safer.

Opponents say the bill would increase the risk of a tragedy.

The Senate State Affairs Committee could weigh in Friday.

Senators took no action Wednesday on SB 1384, which would allow school employees with enhanced concealed weapons permits to carry firearms in school. The committee hearing will continue Friday, and a vote could follow.

“It’s simply not right to force our school employees to act as human shields,” said Sen. Todd Lakey, R-Nampa, SB 1384’s sponsor.

A group of an estimated 80 people — many armed — rallied in support of the Second Amendment at state Rep. Stephen Barrar’s Concord Township office Friday afternoon. According to Barrar, the rally was initially called for by two “anti-gun” groups but members of those groups failed to show.

“I’m disappointed they didn’t make it,” Barrar said. “I wanted them to hear gun owners’ opinions on the Second Amendment. ... The other side didn’t show up. I guess they didn’t want a debate.”

Today, an ordinance has passed in Champaign, IL, to empower the mayor to “[o]rder the discontinuance of selling, distributing, dispensing or giving away of … firearms or ammunition of any character whatsoever.” This action must be swiftly opposed and NRA members in the area have been alerted and are responding to the threat.

The ordinance in Champaign serves as a warning bell to law-abiding gun owners nationwide. We must be on high alert for any attempts to destroy the Second Amendment in jurisdictions throughout the country.
