Many of today’s tactical shotguns come with more rails than Washington, DC’s L’Enfant Plaza station, but that doesn’t mean you must burden them with needless accessories that will just weigh you down. Over the years, however, I’ve identified several accoutrements that are more than mere shotgun fashion. The following accessories can actually lend advantage when the moon is rising and the ne’er-do-wells come knocking.

The .50 Action Express cartridge is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most powerful pistol cartridges. It features a .500-inch bullet diameter (33mm) in a 1.285-inch straight-walled case that has a rebated rim. The overall length of the standard .50 AE round measures 1.610 inches, and the ammo is powered with a large pistol primer. According to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI), the maximum pressure of .50 AE ammo should not exceed 36,000 pounds per square inch (psi). |

If you quickly glance at 38 Special and 357 Magnum ammo, you might not notice any differences and think they were the same round. Although they are almost identical in their case dimensions, the 38 Special and 357 Magnum are extremely different. |

A post-legislative session editorial in the Vancouver Columbian—serving the growing southwest Washington region—illustrates what gun owners and grassroots activists see as indicative of a bias by First Amendment professionals against Second Amendment advocates.
The headline and first sentence of the editorial gives the perceived bias away by declaring “More measures needed to end gun violence” and repeating the phrase in the first line. |

A newspaper in DeKalb County, Ga., is reporting that the county police department is planning a March 19 “safety fair” in response to a Feb. 27 incident in which a youngster apparently found a gun in his mother’s car and accidentally shot himself.
It’s the kind of tragedy typically exploited by the gun prohibition lobby, but in this case, the newspaper chose to report genuine gun safety by quoting from the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s “Project ChildSafe” website. |

Snyder Township supervisors on Monday further discussed the Second Amendment Sanctuary Referendum Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement that has been presented to municipalities throughout the county since last month.
The supervisors on Feb. 7 unanimously approved the cooperation agreement after the passing of a referendum on county ballots in the Nov. 2021 election. According to the ballot, the referendum designated that “no taxpayer resources shall be used to enforce any legislation passed after Nov. 2, 2021, that would infringe upon an eligible citizen’s right to bear arms.”

America’s gun debate has been frozen for decades. We keep having the same arguments with the same talking points over and over again — and Americans continue to die from gun violence at hugely disproportionate numbers relative to the rest of the world. There’s a massive cultural divide here that is very hard to reconcile. If you live in a big city or a major metropolitan area, you very likely think about guns differently than someone who grew up in a rural area. |

Unlike what you hear at most marksmanship competitions, where the crack, boom and rattle of gunfire sounds pretty much the same, the reports of the guns fired at the annual “Victorian Riflemen” matches in Springtown, Penn., are anything but consistent. While the match focuses on firing Martini-Henry rifles in .577-450 caliber and Snider rifles in .577 caliber, the participants (about 40 for this event) bring a fascinating array of mostly original firearms of the latter half of the 19th century, with most of the guns having a connection to the “Tommy Atkins” of Queen Victoria’s empire.

Tikka has made a great name for itself here in the U.S. firearms market. With nearly six centuries of gun-making experience under its belt, Beretta is finally taking the leap into ammunition production with the announcement Wednesday that it finalized its acquisition of Ammotec. Looking to further divest itself from the firearms industry, Switzerland-based RUAG International agreed to shed its Ammotec holding, which generates nearly two-thirds of its small-caliber munitions sales to the civilian market on top of additional sales defense and law enforcement agencies. |
