Democratic lawmakers are considering increasing penalties associated with abuse of red flag laws, as punitive use of the measure is a point of major concern in the overall conversation on gun violence.
The change could make a first-time misuse of extreme risk protection orders, otherwise known as red flag laws, a four-year felony rather than a misdemeanor.
Abuse of the protection orders is a point of concern for opponents of the move who claim they can be weaponized against otherwise law-abiding gun owners to unjustly strip them of their firearms. |

A man got out of a car with a baseball bat early Saturday morning as people gathered for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. I just happened to be in the area for Chicago’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration when my friend sent me a screenshot about a shooting not far from where we were. It came from an app called Citizen, which you can download on your phone and get notifications about the crimes happening around you in real-time. The details of what happened barely made the media, and I probably wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t received the text.

On Monday, The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Christian v. Nigrelli with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of Project 21, a national network of black political, civic, and business leaders. In its brief, The Buckeye Institute argues that New York’s Conceal Carry Improvement Act violates the right of the citizens of New York, particularly black New Yorkers, to keep and bear arms, which the U.S. Constitution guarantees.

I’ve finally come around — I believe in gloves for shooters. Not only do they save wear and tear on my hands, but they’ve provided a few more unanticipated benefits. If you aren’t yet a believer, I’m going to convince you. |

Everyone has an opinion. Most people will give you their impression of armed defense if you ask them. Is it trivially easy or is it impossibly hard? I’ve looked at armed defense for a decade and think we often ask the wrong question about defending ourselves and our families with firearms. One view is that armed defenders have to make split-second decisions after evaluating a number of complex legal and tactical factors. In contrast, many new gun owners want to concentrate on firearms handling skills so they can manipulate their gun with “fast hands”. I don’t think that is what most defenders really do.

While German authorities continue their investigation into the mass shooting at a Jehovah’s Witnesses hall in Hamburg, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms says U.S. politicians should learn something from the tragic incident. “Anti-gunners who claim mass shootings don’t happen anywhere but America are once again proven wrong,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “More importantly, they should acknowledge that restrictive gun laws do not prevent evil people from committing violent crimes, and that they leave innocent people vulnerable to deadly attacks.” |

IT IS CRICIAL THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR STATE SENATORS and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 427 by Sen. Joseph Cervantes (D-Las Cruces), legislation which imposes a 14-day waiting period on firearm purchases. This measure will add nothing to the existing FBI background check process and will only delay your ability to exercise your Second Amendment right to defend yourself, your family and your property. |
